Many years ago i was working for the National Archives & Records Admin. here in southern CA. we had a section called the "Reagan Vault", by the time i arrived there it was emptied (sucks) but this was an impressive facility & must have held some impressive treasures.

THANK YOU! Now that is a mask. I don't know what that other thing is. Meh, it's not as awesome as I thought it would be, but it's still pretty cool. I'd keep it.

Because People in power are Stupid: Obama was also encouraged to take one of the King's concubines for the night. Refusal would lead to embarrassment for the US and for Gabon.

She has since been Bronzed and stored in the national archives, forever in the position of the "six legged Baboon walk."

Pocket Ninja: quickdraw: For those of you too lazy to click on the link somebody in some country you never heard of tried to give Obama a mask that Obama wasn't allowed to accept.

Except that the somebody (the king) didn't *try* to give Obama the mask, he gave him the mask. And Obama *did* accept it, but not for himself. He accepted it on behalf of the country and it's in the National Archives, not sitting on his dresser.

I won't get into the symbolism behind the President of the United States, a man mired in scandal who cloaks himself in secrecy and won't even truly put to rest long-standing questions about the nature of his birth, accepting a "mask" on behalf of his nation, though. That's a discussion for another time.

Wow! ...take a pill dude.

I wonder what we gave back.  Sometimes head of states will give each other gifts which are really just trades between national art galleries with some extra pomp and circumstance tossed on.  Maybe the President to Gabon left with some Ansel Adams originals or something.

I really don't think it was appropriate.

Make sure it's not cursed.

It's a state gift, and it looks like the honchos over in Gabon understand that state gifts to American presidents go into public archives. It'll make a good exhibit in the Obama library in Chicago some day. Until then put it somewhere that can promote trade with Gabon, they could use it.

That being said, Obama's gift giving ability has sucked hard in the past, generally crap from the White House gift shop. Do a little research, if gifts can be kept make them personal, if gifts can't be kept make them exemplary of your country's fine artisanal craftsmanship. Unfortunately for us that comes down to beer and firearms.

Wait, what? He wasn't allowed to accept? Where'd you get that? I thought the opposite was true: he had to accept it for diplomatic reasons.

Can't find a picture of the mask. I bet it's actually pretty dope.

There's a link to it in the article.

There's a link to a similar piece from the same glass studio, but not this one.

I was surprised to see the value was from it actually being really valuable, as opposed to historical value. I was expecting some Gabonese relic.
