From another article.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy (the biggest spender on the list) gave Obama an Hermes golf bag worth $7,750

Except that the somebody (the king) didn't *try* to give Obama the mask, he gave him the mask. And Obama *did* accept it, but not for himself. He accepted it on behalf of the country and it's in the National Archives, not sitting on his dresser.

I won't get into the symbolism behind the President of the United States, a man mired in scandal who cloaks himself in secrecy and won't even truly put to rest long-standing questions about the nature of his birth, accepting a "mask" on behalf of his nation, though. That's a discussion for another time.

Thank you.

The National Archives had a huge exhibit of presidential gifts a few years back that I really wanted to see. Some of them are really funny.

Obama was also encouraged to take one of the King's concubines for the night. Refusal would lead to embarrassment for the US and for Gabon.

well when you factor in the cost of his halal butcher, chef, food taster, cheeseburger czar and security i'm thinking 0bong0 is somewhere around $232,000 taxpayer dollars per cheeseburger.

Wait, what? He wasn't allowed to accept? Where'd you get that? I thought the opposite was true: he had to accept it for diplomatic reasons.

I'm sure it pales in insignificance next to the International House of Friendship Exhibition Hall in Best Korea.

This was a gift to LBJ.  I know Obama has a civil rights era painting hanging in the White House.  Since this was a gift to a former, now deceased President, I wonder if they could they hang this in the White House?  It would be a shame if it has to stay hidden away in the National Archives forever.

*slaps forehead* I hate when they put a tiny bit of text under pictures at the end of articles. Someone also posted it upthread, apparently. That's a crappy mask. Won't even hide my face.

He's allowed to accept it, but not keep it as personal property.  It becomes property of the US government and he just accepts it on the gov's behalf.  The value of a gift from a foreign gov is fairly low ($350 I think) - anything above that it handed over.

IIRC: Gifts that go to the National Archives officially become property of the US government, and are available for use in government-owned buildings. They can be used in the White House by Presidents, but they are not owned by the Presidents to take with them when they leave office. For gifts above a nominal value (it's a really low baseline of like $20), the President accepts on behalf of the American People and gives the item to the National Archives.

The article links to a WW episode but it's the bit about CJ and the statue. What about the one where the president accepts the flag from Taiwan? That one really goes into detail about the process.
