Liberals on Fark to defend her in 3, 2, 1

This is the worst scandal since about fifteen hours ago.

The Daily Show she "created" was just Craig Kilborn being a douchebag and had nothing to do with politics so why are we supposed to give a fark what she thinks?

No different than Anne coulter. Outrageous statement.

2013-05-21 08:43:00 AM
Well played. I'm sure this will get her more new followers than it costs her.

2013-05-21 08:50:08 AM
Her tweet has all the humor of the half hour news hour.  Conservatives would normally find this sort of thing hilarious.

Maybe it's just too soon.

It's completely different, in this case she realized she'd said something bad and retracted it and apologized profusely admitted it was insensitive and inappropriate...how is any of that similar to Ann Coulter, because they both have vaginas?

See, it's funny because a lot of conservatives think natural disasters are "controlled" by an invisible sky wizard. She was mocking their ignorance, not the death and destruction she had no knowledge of at the time.

No need to defend her, just pointing out the fallacy of this faux outrage.

Well, the fact that she genuinely seems sorry is a bit different than the classic "I'm sorry you were offended" go-to tactic so many modern Republicans seem fond of when they're backtracking from rape comments.

However, it was a horrible thing to say, and I don't anyone in this thread is going to actually defend the remark itself. Just how she handled it afterward.

/Now run off and tell your friends that God is targeting my city with hurricanes because we have a large gay population

She's not even defending herself. Why would anyone else? That's what you do not get. Liberals here on fark do not defend anything a liberal says blindly. We do however accept honest apologies and move on.l

How many preachers would be saying this was punishment for making gay marriage legal if it was in a more liberal and less statistically common natural disaster area? In fact, let's forget the hypothetical. How many preachers HAVE said this in the past?

The comment was in poor taste so soon and poorly written, but it seemed to be poking at that old chestnut that gets thrown out every farking time there's a natural disaster while a fundamentalist has an angry erection from dudes.

Because Obama has something to do with it. That's not even a joke.

Obama, because he worked in Chicago and was in politics there, made conservatives obsess over "Chicago-style politics" and paint the entire city as something out of Sin City with unions. It's another phrase they don't understand or think about, just throw it out like it's a magic word to hex liberals.

Cheering for the misfortune and bodily harm of those you disagree with politically due to no fault of their own is despicable.  That being said, this type of cheering goes on all the time when it's perceived that one political entity gets hit harder than another even when it will hurt the country as a whole (as Conservatives cheered when Chicago lost the Olympic bid).

Chicago corruption has been a running joke for some time, but only with Obama have they really screamed about Chicago-style thuggery. Like he single-handedly brought decades of organized crime and corruption to Washington from Chicago, which is the only place in the country where it is. It's like outrage over Bill Ayers, the worst domestic terrorist conservatives never heard of until Obama ran, or Derrick Bell, the most liberal and fringe professor Harvard ever had conservatives never heard of until he was tied to Obama (and whose career was distinguished and prominent), or Jeremiah Wright, the most outspoken America-hating preacher conservatives never heard of until Obama ran (and whose statements were a few magnitudes less horrible than anything from Robertson or Falwell). Obama is connected, therefore it's the worst thing ever. There is no thought behind that. Obama's name is a killing adjective.

Unsurprising that conservatives wouldn't make the connection.  Also unsurprising is conservatives getting their panties in a wad over this while a similar remark by a conservative would be deflected with, "Stop being so sensitive, pussy libtards!"

They hate Chicago because it is the city is where the best and brightest people that want to stay in the Midwest go. They are pissed that not only are their kids becoming libruls, but that they are living with ethnic and racial minorities and the gheys. They are also pissed its happening in their own backyard and not on the coasts, which would be easier to ignore.

The people in downstate illinois hate chicago because chicago supports the rest of the state and they resent it. The only people that pay their keep downstate are the professors and the farmers. The rest of the state is pretty much a bunch of out of work factory workers that are on disability or addicted to drugs, or both. Say what you will about chicago, but at least it isn't Illitucky.

I used to enjoy Winstead's radio show with Rachel Maddow. I especially enjoyed those occasions when Chuck D showed up.

I understand the point she was trying to make here - lampooning the ridiculous shiat people like Pat Robertson spew every time a "liberal" part of the country is hit by disaster. The joke was poorly timed and in unbelievably poor taste, however, and failed to make the point she was attempting to make. It displayed extraordinarily poor judgment, and I'm glad she apologized. More than Robertson and his sort would ever have done.

It was a terrible joke looking to make a political point.

Saying the tornado was "targeting" conservatives is lampooning people who paranoidly claim that the IRS and Obama are always targeting conservatives.

Because tornados don't target. That is absurd.

It is mildly interesting how a joke about conservative victimhood has turned, yet again, into something republicans clutch their pearls over, but the joke was terrible. No one seems to have got it and it is quite crass now that we know about the tradegy.

Next time she should just say nothing at all.

I've only ever seen one, and it was a baby of one.

It touched down about a 1/2 mile from the house and clipped an abandoned farm house, only blowing some boards away.  As we ran to the basement, it dissipated, so like idiots we stopped, but then we looked up, and saw the clouds spinning rather rapidly above the house.  We booked it the rest of the way into the basement.  Thankfully, it didn't touch down again until about 5 miles away, where it nearly took out the co-op elevator.

That said, insensitive tweet is insensitive, but at least her apology sounds like an honest "Whoops, I farked up, my bad.  People of twitter, administer to me my penance."

I am one of those people. I knew they were destructive but I didn't know that they could be THAT destructive. You hear stories about trailer parks and such getting wiped away but those aren't very sturdy structures. Whole buildings made of brick and mortar and anchored to a foundation? We get hurricanes and Sandy was certainly no joke but Sandy was nothing compared to the sheer destruction of that weather system itself.

I've never cared for Winstead as a comedian. Her (and Kilborne's) departure from TDS were the best things that could've happened to it. And her joke was stupid and crass, which, to her credit, she seems to realize now. But I just want to add to your point, for the sake of contrast. Winstead made a bad joke. Robertson literally blamed 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina on pagans, abortionists, gays, and lesbians. He also said the Haiti earthquake was caused by their "pact with the devil." He's also a billionaire media mogul who is still well-connected in the Republican Party. So, essentially, the GOP should STFU and get its own house in order. Democrats can worry about the vast influence Lizz Winstead has on their party themselves.

I think she was really trying to satirize the IRS "they are targeting conservatives" outcry, which is slightly less offensive than trying to be a foil to Pat Robertson. Still, that's the kind of joke you make to your like-minded friends (followed by a 'window seat' reference), not to the Twitterverse. Even if you don't know how bad of a tornado it was, better to be cautious. I know nothing of this person, but she is taking her lumps and feels like a complete dick, so I don't see the point in harping on it.  (Only that first sentence is directed at you; I'm not suggesting you are harping)

Also kind of annoying how the "co-creator of The Daily Show" line in her profile has the pitchfork and torch crowd associating her remark with the show. She could be more clear about her role with the Stewart version.

Or most rural areas. The small town is dying out. There are no jobs, no industries, and no work. Most people leave, some are too old and stay, and others are too stubborn to leave and make do with what's left.

Kansas alone, there are more than 6,000 [27] (ghost towns) according to one Kansas historian, Daniel C. Fitzgerald.

The joke was "Now they'll cite this as an example of Obama's persecution of conservatives too."  That's all she should have said (or not said anything).  It was a fairly poor joke, and an ill-considered one.

Coulter's idea of a joke is "we should invade their countries, kill all their leaders, and force them to convert to Christianity."

Robertson's is "natural disasters (or 9/11) are Sky Man's punishment for abortion and teh homoghey."

Uranus Is Huge!: Are there any really liberal parts of the country that are plagued by tornados? Are there any parts of "Tornado Alley" that aren't redder than Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Saturdays in Autumn?

The Blood God expresses his displeasure at liberals with earthquakes, volcanos, and the odd Nor'easter Superstorm.

Illinois is pretty reliably blue, but the parts that usually get tornadoes are downstate in the rural, redder areas.

Classy move, Glen Beck.  Good job.

It was a tasteless joke that, had this been a more 'commonplace' overhyped natural disaster would have been hysterical 24 hours later.  However, it wasn't 24 hours later, and it wasn't a typical tornado.  I didn't like when NJ got mocked for getting hurricaned, I didn't like those who tried to say God hates liberals for it, and I don't like that tweet.  But goddamnit (this time) Glen Beck is on the right side, IMO.  Bad bad joke that was made too soon, and was a mistake.

Which is why she very quickly apologized. A sincere apology.

fark Glen Beck. He only gives a shiat because it was a "liberal". When he calls out Pat Robertson or Michelle Bachmann, I'll give him credit.

And instead oftaking advantage of a chance to rake her over the coals, he stood up and asked people to back off.

It was ITFA.

'Leave lizz winstead alone,' tweeted notorious conservative commentator Glen Beck on Monday night. 'Clearly bad joke. How many of us has made a joke we wished we could take back? She has to feel awful.#castfirststone.'

verbaltoxin: Rwa2play: zeroman987: Pants full of macaroni!!: Bloody William: Obama, because he worked in Chicago and was in politics there, made conservatives obsess over "Chicago-style politics" and paint the entire city as something out of Sin City with unions. It's another phrase they don't understand or think about, just throw it out like it's a magic word to hex liberals.

In all fairness, they've hated Chicago long before Obama emerged from it.  Mayor Daley and all that.

Can say that about NYC and LA/SoCal as well.

Or most rural areas. The small town is dying out. There are no jobs, no industries, and no work. Most people leave, some are too old and stay, and others are too stubborn to leave and make do with what's left.

It's been a while since I read about it, but during one of the last Kansas threads we had, I read well, this.

Kansas alone, there are more than 6,000 [27] (ghost towns) according to one Kansas historian, Daniel C. Fitzgerald.

And yet, they voted for people like Brownback.

JimStarkBand: mediablitz: JimStarkBand: I don't get to say this often:

I doubt it was just conservatives raising ire, but he spoke out against a backlash that would have in some ways benefited him.

Did you... think he 'called out' Lizz Winstead?

Shame on me for not reading the whole article. I stand by my statement, however. I see this as a way for him to make a "joke" in the future, and say "they do it!". Also, Bachmann and Robertson AREN'T joking, yet he doesn't have a word to say about them.

Glen Beck has proven for a decade that he doesn't do anything that doesn't personally benefit HIM. Sorry, don't take his "leave her alone" seriously beyond allowing him to make "jokes".

Pretty much THIS.  I am kind of on the fence, but again:

a) It takes next to nothing to outrage conservatives, so why should we take this any more seriously than Umbrellaghazi (yes, people died, but then maybe the GOP should choose their derprage more carefully if they want people to give a f*ck)

b) this was satire from a comic, not a shill for the GOP who openly advocates for GOP candidates and therefore should be taxed into oblivion

False equivalency from FarkCons is false.

It's another phrase they don't understand or think about, just throw it out like it's a magic word to hex liberals.

In all fairness, they've hated Chicago long before Obama emerged from it.  Mayor Daley and all that.

See, it's funny because a lot of conservatives think natural disasters are "controlled" by an invisible sky wizard. She was mocking their ignorance, not the death and destruction she had no knowledge of at the time.

No need to defend her, just pointing out the fallacy of this faux outrage.

No.  A handful of crazies that identify with the republican party because we can't stop them does not constitute "a lot".  In the same vein, hurricanes and earthquakes must really hate liberals.

50% is a "handful"?

I'll just change my original from a lot to half.

Did you read the article?  First, it is a huge, and in my opinion misguided, leap to suggest that because one self-identifies as an evangelical or born again christian that one also believes natural disasters are the wrath of a god.  Second, the sample is hardly representative of the entire country, and third, even the article admits those numbers are unusually high.

I stand by what I said - those believing "act of God" are a very small minority.  Also, could just as easily play the guilt by association game with Dems.  I bet that doctor recently convicted of twisting the heads off live born babies self-identifies as a democrat.

You obviously don't know evangelicals. I work with six. They ALL believe global climate change is a lie because god controls the weather.

Find me one prominent evangelical who also believes in man made climate change and I'll accept your premise. Otherwise, your argument is invalid.

Bloody William: How many preachers would be saying this was punishment for making gay marriage legal if it was in a more liberal and less statistically common natural disaster area? In fact, let's forget the hypothetical. How many preachers HAVE said this in the past?

The comment was in poor taste so soon and poorly written, but it seemed to be poking at that old chestnut that gets thrown out every farking time there's a natural disaster while a fundamentalist has an angry erection from dudes.

Yeah, I honestly think it would have been funnier coming from Jon Stewart or Colbert, because they're known satirists, or even with a 'satire' hashtag, but it wasn't a bad joke. Just turned out to be utterly tasteless when the details came in. Foot-in-mouth happens to everyone, and she honestly apologized, so yeah, I'm moving on.

zeroman987: Pants full of macaroni!!: Bloody William: Obama, because he worked in Chicago and was in politics there, made conservatives obsess over "Chicago-style politics" and paint the entire city as something out of Sin City with unions. It's another phrase they don't understand or think about, just throw it out like it's a magic word to hex liberals.

In all fairness, they've hated Chicago long before Obama emerged from it.  Mayor Daley and all that.

I'm sure this will offend many. They might be the best and brightest, but the biggest thing that I remember from my trip to Chicago is that I don't think I saw 1 attractive person the entire time I was there.  My 16 year old was the one who brought this up and damn if he wasn't right once I started looking around.  Ugly people everywhere I looked. Must be those death dogs and foot deep pizza's they eat out there.
For as lame as living in SLC and UT is, there are hot women EVERYWHERE here. Everywhere you look.  They won't have sex with you, and if they do they want to get married after, but at least the human landscape is very nice to look at.

I love the butt-hurt from the comments. "typical liberal' seems to be the most common. Personally I hate it when a comedian apologizes for a joke that doesn't go over instead of telling the complainers to get a sense of gallows humor. Honestly what she should have said is that the tornado was targeting a bunch of bloody idiots who can't seem to learn from their previous generations mistakes of building their homes where nature likes to practice developing it's latest and greatest leaf blower technology.

having said that, they will rebuild & another tornado will rip through their new homes & towns because as you are all aware it's the farking "Tornado Belt".

At the very least, can we rebuild with concrete? not all but a good percentage of homes on Guam are concrete you know why? because they hold up better to Typhoons.

or was/is rebuilding with lumber construction some sort of F-U to the tornado and a symbol of American tenacity? Maybe if we put a couple more nails for shear value the tornado won't simply lift the entire structure off its foundation?

WHAR CONSERVATIVE OUTRAGE WHAR

Obama gave a good speech this morning. I don't know what that idiots problem is. I made a comment earlier today that Obama and Reagan are the two best recent Presidents when knowing how to address a tragedy, and making people feel like something will be done to fix it. Both Bush's, and Clinton also would do a good job most the time, but weren't as masterful. This happened yesterday, I don't know why people would expect him to have all the answers by know. You're assuming that anyone other than you and a few teabaggers are paying the slightest attention to the IRS nontroversy.

and the President, the FBI and the Attorney General who talked about investigating whether there were civil rights violations, violations of the Hatch Act and criminal false statements made. It also has been in the news nonstop for days.
No one else, aside from those people.

I can't say this for many of your comrades but you, sir, are smarter than this.

I think perhaps you're confusing genuine concern with a silly but politically necessary response to a trumped-up media shiatstorm. Obama and his team have to respond to the faux outrage (which is why the Republicans are continuing to beat this dead horse), but that doesn't actually imply that there is any substance to it. It's entirely possible that some genuine wrongdoing may be revealed at some point, but so far there is none.

Why do so many liberals assume all conservatives are religious?  The only athiests I know vote Republican.  And I'm not sure you're aware of this, but minorities tend to be religious.  They also tend to vote Democrat.

the fact that the IRS admitted that what they did was wrong ain't enough to convince you. No siree - that's just politics too. And look over here! Left wing groups were flagged for closer inspection too! That means the IRS lied about their apology and all is good.

You want to talk about how "scandalous" it is? Sure, it isn't terribly scandalous. It was wrong but it ain't gonna cause riots in the streets. Did BO instruct the IRS to unfairly single out right wing groups for audits? No, there is no evidence to suggest that. She was probably attempting to do ironic humor, realized it was inappropriate and offered seemingly genuine heartfelt apologies for the poor timing.

Whereas the thing that she was lampooning is said by religious leaders and conservative pundits almost every time there's an earthquake or a superstorm or hurricane and are never really apologized for and keep happening every time some Liberal enclave gets hit with a natural disaster.

In other words: Typical Republican false equivalencies.

Being Republican means NEVER having to say you're sorry.  Whether you're Ann Coulter, who said that the worst thing about 9/11 was that they didn't fly into the New York Times building, Louis Gohmert, who blamed the body count on the Aurora shooting victims on the victims themselves, or Steve King, who said he sympathized with a maniac who flew his plane into an IRS building.

purple kool-aid and a jigger of formaldehyde: zeroman987: Pants full of macaroni!!: Bloody William: Obama, because he worked in Chicago and was in politics there, made conservatives obsess over "Chicago-style politics" and paint the entire city as something out of Sin City with unions. It's another phrase they don't understand or think about, just throw it out like it's a magic word to hex liberals.

In all fairness, they've hated Chicago long before Obama emerged from it.  Mayor Daley and all that.

You must not have been near the lake. Tons of very good looking people biking and jogging on a nice day.

Then again my tastes aren't white/blonde women; in chicago they are more pale and dumpy than in somewhere like Florida because of all the perogis they eat.

Hey, conservatives say the same thing and worse about every natural disaster that occurs anywhere in the world, not her fault that they can't take every now and then what they dish out on a near-constant basis. Still insensitive and mean no matter who says it, but you can't ignore the fact that one side has practically made it their anthem.

Remember when 9/11 was declared God's punishment for America allowing homosexuality and abortion? How about when Katrina was declared God's punishment for America allowing homosexuality and abortion? Hell, the Indonesian earthquake/tsunami and Japan earthquake/tsunami were declared God's punishment for America allowing homosexuality and abortion.

It's completely different, in this case she realized she'd said something bad and retracted it and apologized profusely admitted it was insensitive and inappropriate...how is any of that similar to Ann Coulter, because they both have vaginas?

Not quite - Liz has one, Ann is one.

No, Saying Ann Coulter is a Pussy is assuming that she has both depth and the capacity to give pleasure, which she has neither of.

In the meantime, does anyone else find it a bit odd that the biggest weather disasters nearly always seem to target the states whose primary voting party regularly claims that they are doing "God"'s work, and that they are keeping the disasters from happening, and that the other states are the reason "God" tries to smite the country with disasters? Either their personal choice in deity has a really, really bad aim, or Irony's just released another posthumous squelch as it's jumped up and down upon.

TV's Vinnie:

But when Pat Robertson says that bad things are "God's Judgement", it's all good. Right Subbo?

It's a whole different issue -- it has nothing to do with jokes in horrid taste. And Democrats seem to be pathologically unable to accept responsibility for ANYTHING. In that, Lizz Winstead certainly out-classes most here; she managed to simply apologize for her own bad actions without trying to find some Republican she could tag with a worse statement. Truly, Obama "never did anything wrong, just ask him" is your leader. I don't recall -- did anyone blame Bush for this yet?

No. It IS the same thing. All of this crap about "god's judgement" being used to explain things from AIDS to little kids being killed. The WBC has literally made a business out of the whole "god's judgement" racket!

Let's all face it. If Al Gore hadn't had the election stolen from him by the lizard peoples in 2000, the weather would be much better today. No tornadoes. There also would have not been a 9/11. Al Gore would have took that memo that said "Al-Qaeda determined to strike in U.S.A.", and kicked Afghanistan's ass beforehand.

Shouldn't that be "would OF took that memo?"
