AHH A SUICIDE BOMBER

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: I always have to laugh at this argument. IF God exists (and I don't know if he/she/it does) then consider this: just how relatively important in the general scheme of eternity would be the lives of even a million people lost in a disaster? Our span of life and whether we get killed in a disaster is irrelevant and immaterial compared to the supposed eternity in Heaven. If God exists then surely this must be his perspective on things. Think about it.

I have and you have just described a truly monstrous being. Additionally, that view is contradicted quite thoroughly by the mythology itself.

If our lives here are so immaterial to it then why would it be so interested in micromanaging the mundane minutia of our lives? Why would anything we do here on Earth matter at all, and how come everyone isn't getting in to heaven regardless of what they do? So according to your view it matters when it's convenient for supporting the mythology, but doesn't matter when it isn't.

Ever read the bible? We're pretty much all supposed to be stoned to death, because almost no one isn't violating some tenant of it - which requires a death sentence - at any given time. Cut your beard? Death. Ever talked back to your parents? Death. Any one single person in your city not a follower of Jehova? Death to EVERYONE, down to the babies and livestock, pile the bodies in the center of town along with their possessions, set fire to it all and leave the smoldering war crime as a warning to others. And don't even start on the slavery... That asshole in the sky never even has had the common decency to issue a "Sorry about that! Should have said something at the time!" about slavery. We here on Earth have managed to, but this deity can't seem to. In fact, he's been oddly silent since the events described in the compendium of the mythology. Hey, come to think of it... ALL gods have been oddly silent when we're actually listening. Strange, huh?

HotIgneous Intruder: I have to question the logic, sanity, and intelligence of building thousands of houses in a place called TORNADO ALLEY. Also of not having full tornado basement shelters in all the schools and having them required by code for all the houses.
People are surprised when this happens again ... and again?
How much are these kids' lives worth?
God can't protect us from being stupid.

So tell me where the safe place is that you live? Can't be California, of course. And not along the East Coast or down along the Gulf. So you must live in an area that has a very low crime rate and virtually no traffic accidents as those cause more deaths than tornadoes. Tornado alley takes up over 12 states. I lived in Topeka when the first and only tornado hit in '66. Pretty good odds to me. BTW, basements and required code doesn't help a hell of a lot with 200 mph winds. But tell me again how safe your neighborhood is.

Not to mention that, according to NOAA stats, the only state in the US that does NOT get tornadoes is Alaska. Mississippi has a tornado death toll higher than OK. OK's is similar to TN, KY, IN and lower than Alabama. "Tornado Alley" has a high number of tornadoes but the majority of them do minimal, if any, damage. Obviously, this is no comfort to those who have their homes reduced to matchsticks but the reality is that your chances of receiving a direct hit from a tornado are extremely small.

2013-05-21 03:26:21 PM

Dear Jerk: I'm sure the actuaries have worked it out and tornado alley is a managable risk, whereas a flood plain is not. Still, I'd give a lot a thought to a roundish, blown concrete house.

It is easy to see how this is the case.  For all the terrible devastation, this was still a somewhat localized event when compared with a significant flood.  It covered what, 40-50 square miles?  Floods impact hundreds or thousands of square miles.

Having responded to the one of the 27 April 2011 F4s that hit Alabama, I can say without a doubt that if I ever build a new house it will have a safe room.  People say it over and over, but it really is true that you can't comprehend the destruction until you see it with your own eyes.

Unless you're the parent of one of the 20 or so kids that were killed. I'm sure they have some choice words for God's selection on sparing a pup over a child.

"Thy Will be done" is the customary choice of words.

I have this mental image of extreme atheists standing over victims of a church fire and asking, "Where is your God now?"  I hope the Farkers who gave it to me are proud of themselves.

Alex Jones, is this you?

From his show: Link

"Following a long tangent, Jones returned to the caller's subject. While he explained that "natural tornadoes" do exist and that he's not sure if a government "weather weapon" was involved in the Oklahoma disaster, Jones warned nonetheless that the government "can create and steer groups of tornadoes."'

Totally staged.

2013-05-21 06:59:52 PM

ArgusRun: The interview in this case is a great example.  Puff piece.  No real journalistic value.  If they help right off the bat, nothing of value is lost and you helped an old woman and her dog.  But the default setting is "KEEP FILMING."

Journalism has seriously gone to hell in the digital age. Granted, there have always been muckrakers and yellow journalism, but there's no longer any emphasis on becoming renowned for being a trustworthy source of NEWS. It's all about getting page hits now. Consumers don't want to think. They don't want to analyze information. They just want to feeeeel. Getting those page hits is a simple matter of appealing to emotions, like shock, outrage and fear. "If it bleeds, it leads" is sure-fire ratings grabber every time, and the tv station with the highest ratings in town is the one that airs stories that make the town seem like a crime-ridden war zone -- even when it's a fairly placid little place.

You should assist the old woman, but not do anything more. She seemed like a child opening a birthday present.

2013-05-21 07:48:50 PM

mongbiohazard: Pretty sure it's not in dispute that at least 51 people were killed by that tornado.

If an omniscient, omnipotent deity did indeed save her then he also made the choice to stand by while 51 other people die - even though as a being of infinite power saving them would amount to no extra effort at all. That's quite a dick move, and a being like that does not deserve any devotion - and in fact deserves scorn.

If this being is actually in control of our lives, as that school of mythology teaches, then he's reponsible for the tornado in the first place, and actually killed those people himself. That's actually unambiguously evil, and a being like that deserves to be resisted however possible.

If that's all wrong, and the deity is neither omiscient or omnipotent then what else do we have wrong about it, and why the fark would we worship it?

Either this deity is not concerned with events like that at all, and saves no one, or he's an evil piece of garbage.

For someone seemingly committed to rational thought, I have to wonder why you're trying to proselytize on a sappy Fark video thread.

Being a cat person and an Oklahoman, if I ever am subjected to my home being destroyed, as long as my cats make it out alive that's all that matters to me. Everything else is secondary.

Got very dusty in here.

I horrified my insurance agent once while going over my home owner policy. I told him that long as my animals got out of the house safe screw the house. In the end yes I'd be upset but it JUST STUFF. If I needed to make a choice the pets WILL ALWAYS come first. That poor old lady (like most little old ladies I know) only love in her life is probably her dog. House gone, life long collectibles gone, no clothes or food who cares the dog is safe. Good enough for her.
