wxboy: xria: nukeim: Yup.  I mean...We had go-bags for the kids by the back door, I stocked the storm shelter with water, chairs, LED lanterns, etc...We also had a plan for how to do things if it hit the fan. It did, plan was enacted...And VOILA! No tornado at my house. Just baseball sized hail. But my wife is paranoid, and is a list-maker and a level VII planner...Most people? Not so much.I'm just agog that Moore got hit AGAIN. I grew up there, and both of the houses I grew up in are now gone. I feel so bad for the kids...That had to be absolutely terrifying. :(

The thing I was wondering is that there was a spot where the two tracks they were showing crossed each other, but I couldn't tell from the map whether it was a bunch of fields outside the suburbs still, or whether some people might have got hit in both 99 and now 13.

And http://kfor.com/2013/05/20/interactive-map-1999-2003-2013-moore-torna d oes/ which kind of shorts the 1999 path.

Looks like it's mostly open, but there's some widely-spaced houses which would have been in the path of both.

Yesterday's track is more consistent with a right-moving supercell, which are in general more severe.

CNN just said that the picture of the "couple" walking down the street where the man is holding the girl and the woman has the black eye holding another girls hand isn't parents but in fact teachers.  I've heard a few stories of hero teachers coming from this.  When this is all said and done we Farkers need to make our way down to OK and buy a few rounds....

Under Tulsa is a huge system of caverns dug out by coal mining.  I say we kick the miners out and move everyone into that.

I've always wanted to live in one - or a cave. There was a House Hunters International episode about a couple that wanted to buy a home in a cave. I think it was in France. They spent less than 200k USD.

Ah. So maybe it's still @ 51. They said there were 40 more bodies expected (half of which are supposed to be kids). Perhaps it's the 40 they're still waiting for that have been overcounted. Here's to hoping....

Either one. Word is they may have counted victims more than once by accident so the total is now 24. I'm sure that may go up as they keep digging through today but it's at least a better number to work from.

Must have combined a field count with a count to where they transported the bodies.  Something like that but that is a terrible mistake to make.

That means that someone is counting the number of body bags leaving a site (say, the school, for example); someone else is counting the number of bodies in the morgue; and a third person is adding up the two without thinking checking to see if they are the same.

FullMetalPanda: ds_4815: tinfoil-hat maggie: Shadow Blasko: AlanSmithee: Fun fact: tornadoes in Australia spin in the opposite direction.

Fun fact, anti-cyclonic tornadoes happen in North America as well.

Really? I had no idea. Wow...

Rare, but yep, they happen. Coriolis force tends to give hurricanes the spin directions you'd normally associate with the hemisphere "rule", but tornadoes occur on too small a scale to be affected much by it. Wind shear's the main factor there.

God damn unpatriotic tornadoes!!!  In America we spin the correct way, the Murica way!!

The ones that spin in the other direction are artificially created.

Of course. So you use bigger missiles, or better shaped charges. Saying "but spall liners" is a bit like saying "but battlements".

Sorry, I had thought that through more and wasn't going to post that, but it somehow went through when I responded to another post. Disregard.

'Sfine. Wasn't trying to pick a fight, just point out that just because a projectile is stopped by a barrier may not mean the end of your problems on the other side.

The thing that seriously bugs me about these tornades is: why doesn't anyone in Tornado Alley have basements?

I don't buy the "water-table's too high" argument.  Buy a freaking sump pump, if you're afraid of water seeping in.

mrshowrules: I doubt even though it would be great.  The medical examiner confirmed 51 deaths so that is pretty much a fact.

The medical examiners office is the one dropping the figures. From the BBC report:

"We have got good news. The number right now is 24," Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer at the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, told reporters.

The death tolls from most disasters are massively overstated at first. It's a combination of press salaciousness, well-meaning disorganisation and the desire to bring in as much money as possible in the way of donations. For example, when Oxfam launches an appeal for victims of a disaster somewhere, it's usually safe to divide their claimed number by two or four to get the truth.

Snarky? Well yes, but then it's a good thing, isn't it?
