Hmm.  Seems like Microsoft has just given Anonymous another tool to DDOS 3rd parties.

Just skype message anyone with text containing a targeted URL, and Microsoft helpfully goes out and hits the URL.

I wonder how big their pipe is

I think that depends on if this is using the SafeScan (or whatever the hell that feature is called) service that MS has. That service will only look every so often to see what the website looks like and records what it finds in a database, as to avoid DDoS like behavior

Maybe we should invent some desperate-sounding marketing man's idea of an internet buzzword to encapsulate the angst we wish people would feel.

I'm going to go with "Moogled".

Done in one - also, you'll note that Microsoft explicitly stated why they were scanning for URLs, instead of giving you Google's "we may do something with your stuff - anything, really" clause.

And them links that you put on facebook show up at the links site as facebook visiting.

/The Bing(microsoft) search engine has been rather vicious this past week on forums.

Microsoft is looking at links from my Skype conversations? Is that why I keep getting this suggested ad?

Skype used to have clauses that I interpreted as "We have the right to use your node as a cloud based switch if you just happen to connect from somewhere where the in-bound firewall isn't too tough".  Is that stuff gone?

Wireshark has caught it sending blocks of hex coded crap when I wasn't in a call.   I'm pretty sure it was outbound, not an update cumming in, but I didn't look that close.  But "netstat -b" claimed it was connected to skype's executable.  Seems too ineffecent a transport to be VOIP data.

Pretty much why I kill skype when I'm not doing a conference.

Nope. Sorry. I don't use Skype, either.

How could this possibly be surprising?

The entire friggin' Net is a party line, unless you really take active steps to encrypt, anonymize, etc., which itself can attract attention.

Dunno what the total pipe is, but I got 300 down/200 up on my personal laptop.

/Of course, it had like a 2 second latency, so it was basically useless.

Well, then - if they explicitly state it, then please explain why they're doing it.
Especially why they only do this with https-URLs and why they only do HEAD-requests.

Who cares why they do it, they say they will do it and they do. Maybe Bill in purchasing likes to see what strange crap you people are up to. You signed the contract (electronically) you said they could do it.

Why are you whinging now?

Everything is not a conspiracy.
