The real hero is the poor schmuck who had to schlep lil' stumpy here up the side of the mountain. I'd buy that dude a beer, and I wouldn't even have to hold it up to his mouth for him to chug it.

So climbing Everest has become so easy you don't even need arms.

Come on- its a good thing, but- this would have been better , fta  Everest was always high on the list, along with a dream of raising funds for the disabled and orphans in his native country.

bolding is mine.
oops. Anyhow- good on him, but priorities. Just sayin

So, following the Canadian, then?

Is there a type of minority or disability that hasn't climbed Everest by now?  There's probably a trail of McDonald's wrappers all the way to the summit by now.

Seems like they would need less oxygen, so that's kind of cheating

Seriously, the summit to Everest must look like the registration area of the Special Olympics.

Aren't we throwing the word conquer around a little bit here subby.

Are the ultra-fatties of America conquering the Food Club in their rascal scooters?

Where did they get him a Game of Thrones like guy to haul him up the mountain. That's some straight up Hollywood shiat.

And by climb you mean hauled up in a litter carried by a half a dozen sherpa slaves. I'll wait till you do it, then break your record!

I dunno... you'd think people who are afraid of spiders would WANT to go to a place where spiders can't survive

I need to look up why climbing Mt. Everest is only feasible in May.

Everest is getting crowded for a place where you cannot naturally survive. Eventually, you're going to be sipping the last of your O2 while waiting for three teams in front of you to get their ass out of a trail bottleneck. Then visibility drops and you turn into a landmark for the next few decades.

There's a trail of really expensive other garbage along the way if you want to help yourself to go and get it.

It's the best climbing weather, and considering the little hike costs $13-35k if you can DIY, people really want to get up the mountain when they can.

There's a couple hundred climbers that hang out near the peak offering free used gear.

Weather. The monsoons hit in the summer and just make the weather such that climbing Everest is anywhere from ill advised to potentially suicidal, though people have climbed it during the summer months. Another issue is that due to summer warming the Khumbu icefall is less solid than usual and given several routes cross it, that's a concern. Even under ideal conditions a person can have a part of the icefall just give way under them and fall into a crevasse or have a big ass chunk of ice fall on them. Indeed you're just as likely, if not more likely, to die crossing the icefall than from exposure up at high altitude on Everest.

These stories just aren't interesting.
People are mapping the universe, they have found planets orbiting other stars. Quantum processors are a reality. Generic engineering and stem cells have us approaching the cusp of immortality. We have become the gods that our ancestors worshiped.

But yeah, some people can run or climb in a way vastly inferior to other animals. That's pretty cool too, I guess.

2013-05-21 03:41:09 AM
One other thing.

It's much more difficult to reach a summit when there is an assassin following your.

Or is there?

Rich man pays enough for oxygen bottles, warm undies, and a climbing visa.

Truly a hero.

Mount Everest is covered with human excrement, food litter, corpses, abandoned gear, discarded supplies, and a thick layer of disrespect.

Good going, humanity. You've repeatedly conquered the highest peak and, in so doing, desecrated this sacred mountain.

Maybe it's time to leave her the f*ck alone for a while.

This^^

It seems like all you need is a lot of money now to employ the amazing Sherpas to get up Everest.

" Sunday when the last update suggested the team -- which includes sherpas helping push and pull him up -- was close to the top."

A nice cosy sled with a cup of hot chocolate and a team of Sherpas to haul my ass up the mountain sounds like the way to get up. Mosh!

Apart from the idea that the mountain is "sacred", I don't get what the problem is with leaving refuse there.  It's not like there are animals living on the upper slopes ofChomolungma  whose natural habitat is being destroyed.

I'm reminded of the way that mining is banned in Antarctica. It's the only continent on Earth that is mostly uninhabitable by any life more complex than bacteria and the occasional lichen. And yet it's the only continent that gets full environmental protection under international law.

It's a big chunk of rock.  There's nothing sacred about it.

It is.  On account of the lines.  Seriously.  People have died because of the lines.
