Thank you.  I just got through to him, he's alright.  He's not sure if his house was hit or not.  I fear the final total of casualties.

Andromeda: 75 kids trapped in debris at the school
I hope CNN is wrong

Unfortunately, that's what the local reporter on the scene on the feed I've been watching (KFOR) just said, too--though he then said that 35 kids had been rescued and he didn't know if it was 40 (75 minus the 35) or 75 that were still in there.  Either way, this is horrific.

Di Atribe: netizencain: How the fark is a 'hallway' a safe zone in a school in tornado alley?  Who the fark approves that?

I dunno, you got a better idea? You seem to be the expert.

You get to an interior room. A hallway is often in the interior of a building. Do you need me to explain it to you? Do you need my credentials as to how I know that?

It's good, but it's not much.

If you don't have a basement, you get into a central location without windows. In many elementary schools, that would be the hallways.

The Downfall: Tornadoes are not hurricanes. And the man-made structures you are talking about deal with waves/water. Not wind. Tornadoes are wind. And faster and stronger winds than hurricanes.

Saw a report the winds hit 300 mph with the tornado....ain't nobody got anything that can survive that.

The idea is more like a grid of devices throughout the area permanently in place for constant protection. It's also entirely academic.

They'd have to be completely independent of the power grid to function.

I suppose a bomb, detonated at the right altitude, COULD, possibly, disrupt the cyclonic effect. But, if you miss, or mess up; you blowup someone's cow

Because I'm sure the government would like to hear more about that not at all bald faced farking retarded idea.

You could build a weather control network, but the farking Q would just bypass it anyway

Only mountains would break up these storms and even then not always

There's always one. Don't waste your time.

It doesn't take an expert to build a farking tornado shelter in a public building.  So yes, explain to me the logic of electing to not do the right thing.  Go ahead... you're the expert.

Marine1: They're possible, you just have to be willing to build one. We carved a damn fortress into Cheyenne Mountain, for fark's sake.

They should be built into the price of a home. This thing where people get killed and they find the corpse 1/2 a mile away from the home because they didn't have anywhere to go is getting really old. Especially when it's a kid.

Yeah ok whatever you say. I suppose you're the expert in the geology of Oklahoma. Again, if they were widely available & feasible, don't you think everyone would have one?

WhoGAS: Does anyone have a link to a graphic showing the path of the tornado today?

I can't get ahold of any of my family there and I can't find any information about the path.  I just want to see how close it hit and make sure they're okay.

I've never seen a tornado survive the journey into Tulsa county, but there's always room for exceptions.

Most of us are volunteers who work with the National Weather Service's SkyWarn program. We have decals on our cars that indicate us as SkyWarn Storm Spotters but we get no special privileges with speed/red lights etc. but occasionally do get access to damage sites.

BetterMetalSnake: Oh man, it took out the Warren theater.

Given that pretty much everything around it was flattened, I think it's remarkable it's still standing. I wonder how long until they reopen? Glad I got to see Trek at their IMAX this weekend ...

And people outside the OKC metro (and Wichita) won't understand why this is a big deal ...

Nope, there's a few Farkers who are storm chasers. I'm sure they'll show up eventually.

craigzy: this is probably a stupid question, but do you need a special pass from the cops to be a storm chaser?

Nope.  Most of the larger groups won't take you along unless you go through training, but there's nothing stopping a Joe Six-Pack from trying to chase on their own.

Apparently when you go into broadcast journalism, they don't make you take a class on how to speak someone who has just been affected by a natural disaster.

craigzy: this is probably a stupid question, but do you need a special pass from the cops to be a storm chaser?

It's not a stupid question, but it's about arguably stupid people. Fascinating as it is to see the footage from storm chasers, you have to question their judgment. If the storm turns unexpectedly there's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

But no, there's no permit. The authorities cannot make you take shelter or any other measures to protect yourself. These people are going out on their own hook.
