Mutable_Beaver: Does anyone know if the schools around there have underground shelters? I hope so!! After 1999 you think they would at least consider it.

Underground shelters are not always possible due to the high water table. I know that's a problem here in N Texas. It's not that people just forgot about that being an option. Every school does tornado drills at least twice a year.

crab66: teenytinycornteeth: For us laypeople, what is a "hook echo" that they're talking about?

That is what is used to describe  the shape of a tornado on radar.

A lack of a hook echo does not mean there is not a tornado but the big nasty ones pretty much always show up as one.

[i40.tinypic.com image 543x416]

and a hook THAT well-defined is pretty much a gimme.

2013-05-20 05:02:22 PM
Speaking of a hook echo, Doppler is showing a new one forming on the storm that went through Moore.

2013-05-20 05:03:31 PM
This dude on the KFOR traffic copter really knows his local geography.

2013-05-20 05:03:31 PM

ArtosRC: youmightberight: Got to 2.25m wide.

Was that the tornado or simply the debris field?

The debris field. It is what does the majority of the damage. Just imagine the trees and buildings in your neighborhood blasting through the air around 180-200mph.

2013-05-20 05:03:58 PM
"A unit has been in... uh... an accident."

"We're trying to get into a neighborhood here and it's a ... complete disaster."

2013-05-20 05:04:05 PM

eepapapee: This is the worst American disaster I've seen in my lifetime.

worse than Katrina? No. Sandra? No.

This is some nasty shiat, man

2013-05-20 05:04:37 PM
That woman's leg is impaled.

2013-05-20 05:04:49 PM
Did channel 9 just show an impaled woman live on air?

2013-05-20 05:04:53 PM

jayhawk88: Shiat, on News9 is that live footage of the tornado again?

No... It's previous footage. They really should label it.

2013-05-20 05:04:54 PM
Jesus Christ a woman has been IMPALED by debris

2013-05-20 05:04:57 PM

Going to be bad for lots of people.

Yikes- woman with board through leg.  Fire's a really bad sign too.

2013-05-20 05:05:08 PM
They just showed a woman with a board stuck in her

2013-05-20 05:05:17 PM
My sister lives near 164th and Santa Fe. Still can't figure out if there's damage in that area. I think the tornado went a little north of there. I think.

Being within a mile of that farkers must have been farking terrifying all the same.

2013-05-20 05:05:20 PM
Jeezus! just saw a woman with a giant board through her leg. Wont post pic

2013-05-20 05:05:25 PM
that lady is pretty badass for walking out of the debris with a chunk of wood stuck in her leg like that

Closed the webstream, leaving on Weather Channel...not gonna subject my partner to on-the-ground video of impaled victims.

Maud Dib: Never heard of Jarrell, eh?

I was having a meeting with a possible business partner in a restaurant when Jarrell happened. All the TVs had footage going. We sat there in stunned silence as the tornado progressed. It was surreal.

Maud Dib: HaywoodJablonski: Note to self: stay in Texas.

Never heard of Jarrell, eh?

Fine.  I will never go north of Lake Conroe again

2013-05-20 05:06:49 PM
That poor lady with the two kids they're interviewing. I wouldn't even be able to talk after that.

2013-05-20 05:06:56 PM
Mom held her daughter in the tub by her hair as the wind pulled her. Damn.

2013-05-20 05:07:00 PM
And now the part where they talk to shell-shocked victims, providing no useful information.

How about "where can people go for temporary housing" instead of "look at this devastated mother and tell her 'man, it could have been even worse if you weren't in the bathtub'.?"

2013-05-20 05:07:38 PM
Had to happen sooner or later

The first person who says thank god I'm alive should be shot.

2013-05-20 05:08:04 PM
Clear, defined, rapid rotation near the new wall cloud dropping off the Moore storm. This storm is vicious, and it's not done.

2013-05-20 05:08:11 PM

Geriatric Goodman Brown: Can anyone tell me if the tornado broke up before hitting bryant street east of 35?

We have family at 10th and Bryant.

It looks like 10th is far enough north that they should be ok. Let us know when you know they're alright, ok? They should be alright.

2013-05-20 05:08:17 PM
God, is everyone in that neighborhood fat? You'd think so just from watching the footage..

2013-05-20 05:08:21 PM

JerseyTim: This dude on the KFOR traffic copter really knows his local geography.

I was able to follow along his description in Google Maps and look at the satellite photos of what the area looked like before today.

Baseball-sized hail reported in Oklahoma County.

Good lord.
