JerseyTim: Do the schools have shelters and whatnot? Or are they just sitting ducks?

I believe they all have pretty fortified shelters but it's a matter of rounding everyone up and getting to them in time. Hopefully that had enough warning to get to the shelters, but given the ferocity the footage showed unless the shelters were underground they may have not done much good.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph.  That would haunt me forever if I saw it coming my way.  My prayers are going out to everyone involved...those injured, lives lost, families in need, first responders and rescue workers of all kinds.

Been through a fair share of tornadoes in central IL, one actually hit our house when I was young but just did some mild shingle damage. Never seen one on this scale, but about 4 years ago in college I was alone at my (basically cardboard-walled 2 story) apartment building when a storm was coming through and the news said the tornado was heading south along the 4-lane road I lived on.

Best believe I literally sprinted out of the front door with a backpack of about 6 valuables to the big 5 story lab a 1/2 block away into their basement. It ended up veering away, but I could see it in the distance. It's always eerie, if not downright terrifying if you're in the path. The kind of thing that makes you feel like an insignificant speck while the hand of destruction reaches down.

/We had to shelter at my elementary school once and about 1/2 the kids were crying the whole time... can't imagine what's going through everyone's mind in OKC right now

Mutable_Beaver: solaufein: Two schools hit that I've seen so far.

Does anyone know if the schools around there have underground shelters?  I hope so!!  After 1999 you think they would at least consider it.

One of the schools is in horrific shape. The dispatcher guy is freaking out. He's talk-yelling about things being blocked off, missing children, etc. It's still chaos. He keeps asking if there's anyone in charge here.

I know it's probably too soon, but I have to ask...

They had a few days warning about this. Why didn't the state shut down the schools and stuff and open shelters to all who might need them?

Holy fark...

The difference between a hurricane and a tornado. Tornadoes just APPEAR and you have no idea where they'll drop and which way they'll jump. There's no real way to predict a tornado until you see the signs. Hurricanes you have days to prepare for.

teenytinycornteeth: For us laypeople, what is a "hook echo" that they're talking about?

It's just how it looks on the radar. Tornadoes will usually show up with a hook shape on the radar as a result of the rotation.

"hook echo" is what a tornado looks like on radar, the rotation shows up as a hook on the SW corner of a thunderstorm

Example from 1999.  The hook is at the lower left of the storm, and is approximately where the tornado is, in the simplest terms.

I'll let some one else explain the details, but it is essentially the radar signature of a storm around a tornado.  The storm wraps around the west side of the funnel.

teenytinycornteeth: For us laypeople, what is a "hook echo" that they're talking about?

It's a formation in the cloud system that is a very strong indicator of upper rotation in the clouds that could turn into a funnel cloud. It looks like a pirate hook shape. You tend to see them on radar in red and yellow.

Tornadoes are weird because they rarely occur in the rain, if ever. In my experience the rain will die and it gets really quiet, and the sky turns a really sickly greenish color. You can hear it coming for a mile too, like a weird freight train horn or the sound when you blow over the mouth of a soda bottle. I guess that's why they say the calm before the storm.

Holy hell.

I've jumped out of planes, almost drowned several times while whitewater rafting, and my only vehicle is a motorcycle.

Tornadoes scale the piss out of me.

Thoughts go out to families with kids in those schools.

The remains of someone's house is on fire. So what the tornado didn't destroy, fire is finishing up with. Yay.

It started breaking up at Bryant, but didn't really break up until it crossed Sunnylane.  10th might be on the north side of the tornado path.

That is what is used to describe  the shape of a tornado on radar.

A lack of a hook echo does not mean there is not a tornado but the big nasty ones pretty much always show up as one.

We don't have the tech to pinpoint certain areas like hurricanes.  We knew there was a big risk for Oklahoma but there's no way right now to know where.  Unless you want to evacuate hundreds if not thousands of square miles, having people concentrated in the danger zone could actually be a bad thing if that's where the tornado decides to hit.
