Tornadoes are one of the few things that scare me on an absolutely primal level.

True dat.  You can't see a hurricane, and you can't see an earthquake, but there's something about seeing the dark tentacle of a tornado reaching down from the clouds that just makes your skin crawl.

You could not have kept me away had that been my child's school. Driving in or walking in, I'm going.

My thoughts with all those scared families right now.

So, ... are you under age 12? Or do you just mean natural disasters, and forgetting about Katrina?  I'm confused?

Stuff developing in my area, probably miss me to the east like yesterday.  Left work early to pick my kid up at the bus stop in case it started nasties during his 0.6 mile walk to the house.  Still clear here.

Really hope no deaths in that S. OKC school...

As a kid growing up in Toledo, tornadoes would scare the fark out of me. Not quite Tornado Alley, but close.

Jebus..cars on IH35 are toast. Gonna be some major body counts.

tinfoil-hat maggie: Kaeishiwaza: Wow, the helicopter footage is amazing.  I've never seen a tornado 'rope-out' and dissipate live, but it was fascinating to watch.  If it weren't so awful it would be beautiful.

That's a good way of describing tornadoes.

It really is. They're beautiful, dangerous beasts. Frankly, I'd love to see one in person. A small one, preferably churning up an uninhabited field. Ideally fallow.

/Best just to stick with Twister...

Bunny Deville: thismomentinblackhistory: Good luck. We just got caught in a storm whilst viewing the largest crucifix in the world. Maybe just the US? It was big.

The one on 40?

Also, good luck, OK farkers.

Indian Lake in Michigan. I don't think it's the largest cross -- crucifix, rather. A huge iron Jesus.

Now we're waiting out the last of the storm until we can cross to Mackinac Island.

Ever since I was a kid and we had tornado drills in school it's just been the deepest rooted fear in my soul.  I've only been in the midst of the sirens going off and having to take shelter once or twice, I can't even imagine hearing that roaring, feeling the foundations shake.

Yup. I'm drivin through that tornado, I don't even care.

Although knowing my kid, she'd already have elected herself incident manager & taken control of the situation. I show up, "Back off, Mom, I'm workin here!"

That's my only comfort right now. I just hope all those babies are ok. I can't even imagine.

Does anyone know if the schools around there have underground shelters?  I hope so!!  After 1999 you think they would at least consider it.

2013-05-20 04:53:04 PM
Jesus. At least two schools destroyed-- unclear at this point if kids were still inside or not.  Even the blades of grass on the ground were sucked up. It's just mud now.

Mrs.Sharpier: ArtosRC: Mrs.Sharpier: Can someone out there put this into perspective for me? I'm a dumb person when it comes to weather. Like size wise, how big are the tornados?

This tornado is approximately a half-mile wide, and it's grinding along at twenty miles an hour. Winds are clocking  well above 200mph. It's in the middle of a metropolitan area. This is about as bad as it gets.

Oh...God.

Got to 2.25m wide - windspeeds around 225. Thats as big as I can remember hearing about even may 3 was only 1.4-1.6m wide.

Worried about gas leaks near the school, damn...
