Tornadoes are one of the few things that scare me on an absolutely primal level.

Take that shiat seriously and do whatever you can to get underground or get out of the way.

ArtosRC: Mrs.Sharpier: Can someone out there put this into perspective for me? I'm a dumb person when it comes to weather. Like size wise, how big are the tornados?

This tornado is approximately a half-mile wide, and it's grinding along at twenty miles an hour. Winds are clocking  well above 200mph. It's in the middle of a metropolitan area. This is about as bad as it gets.

Oh...God.

Smelly Pirate Hooker: I'm hoping it's just that cell network is overloaded/down. I did text, also. No answer yet. (shrug) can't do anything from 200 miles away. Not wanting to panic until I know there's something to panic about.

Yeah, but it still sucks. I was freaking out over my mom during Sandy and when I finally got her, she was like, "Yeah, it just rained really hard for a while. I think some branches came down. Oh, and my power might have flickered."

She lives about a half hour from Atlantic City.

I always say, "Fark that, we know hurricanes are coming for 7-10 days a head of time. Tornadoes are the scary shiat"

I actually prefer volcanic eruptions and earthquakes on the left coast. The just happen.

Good grief. Americans and this "left coast" weirdness.

I lived in Norman when I was a kid for exactly 6 weeks. I remember epic floods and frogs falling from the sky, I shiat you not, it was like a scene from Magnolia. OK has crazy stupid weather.

It's large. Its destructive power remains to be assessed. But generally, huge tornadoes are also very destructive when they hit a populated area, which this one is. It's going through an area full of houses, businesses, you name it. It's not too far west of Tinker AFB.

Tornados range in size. We had a twin pair of F1s come down the road years ago here. Those took out two small barns, an archery outbuilding, and a bunch of tree limbs. (A neighbor's porch needed repairs, too.) Those were small ones.

This one is damn huge, and long-lived. Those little ones were short-lived, did relatively little damage, and didn't hurt anybody. This one's taking lives. Guaranteed.

MartinaMcSorley: wxboy: Tornado Emergency for Moore and southern OKC.

Is there something very specific about the Moore area that causes more tornado activity there than other places?  *Is* there, in fact, more activity there than other places?  It seems to happen around Moore so, so often.

Tinker AFB was once hit by tornadoes twice in one week.

I believe that was some sort of record for most frequent repeat tornadic touchdowns. Today may be breaking that record. Geez.

And to answer your question, there are lots of places in OK that are hit repeatedly. There are infamous tornadoes from Edmond, Moore, Tuttle, and OKC proper. There's a reason that the meteorology department at OU is world-renowned.
