You can't eat gold.  you need basic food like rice and beans and a trade good like alcohol or antibiotics.  DON"t forget ammunition to keep what is yours

Not me.  Commodities have been in a bubble for many years and it was inevitable that the prices would have to come down, even with all the central banks easing.

Now, if the US could quit making ethanol fuel out of food maybe we could see food prices come down next.

I am going to assume this is sarcastic but I wanted to point out how common it is to think one is smacking someone else down and yet revealing a horrifying flaw about one's character.

Why would anyone WANT to buy people "like cattle"?  Hmmm?

I am doing my happy dance now, because this is going to help decrease the cost of our research.

Gold is really, REALLY useful for nanotech (Gold nanoparticles are easy to make, have good optical properties, don't oxidize easily like silver ones do), so the high price of gold has REALLY been torqing me off. I'll let my advisor know the price keeps dropping.

Well the economy has started to pick up, relatively, so as much as a President has influence over an economy, he has also decreased the price of the "safe" commodities people switch to when the economy is bad.

When you've invested in metals, a bunker, lots of weapons and a cache of freeze dried food, you want to get some use out of your investment. You want the shiat to come down so that you can laugh at the helpless dying of starvation, or at the hands of armed gangs, while you sit tight.

The rest of us just want to go on with our lives, rather than looking forward to some sort of Road Warrior type post apocalyptic nightmare. Besides, The Road showed the most likely outcome of such preparation; no benefit to those who prepared, but a wonderful windfall for some stranger to come across later.

History has mostly forgotten the names of California's gold miners. But the name of the guy who made his fortune selling them pants? Levi Strauss? Now there's a great illustration of where the money really is.

The futures price of corn is down almost 50% from last year's drought-induced high. The reason: we got a shiat ton of rain this spring, and export demand is down. These affect corn prices far more than ethanol production.

If I survived an apocalypse like that shown in The Road, I'd only need one bullet, to put in my brain so I didn't have to live through that shiat.

The irony is that what they're doing isn't preparation at all.  A bunker, weapons, ammo, food and water, eh?  And how long will that last?  One, maybe two years?  See, the problem isn't whether everything runs out. . . it's when only one essential runs out.  There's a reason why trade is as old as society itself.

If society ever does collapse, the first thing humans will have to do is rebuild society as quickly as possible.  We need farmers to grow food, police to keep them safe, industry to make equipment, extraction to supply industry, laws to define & punish crime, administrators to ensure compliance. . . and we're right back to having a society again.  There is no other way if you expect to survive more than a couple years.  There'll be an epic shake-up, but it's really just moving jobs around.  The upside is that most of the bullshiat economy (read: financial services) will become expendable, but it's not worth a zombocalypse just to see that.

If anyone's gambling against society, what they're doing is betting money on their own slow demise.

I grew up around these retards in rural Texas.   I always loved getting about 8 beers into a conversation letting them drone on about their Doomsday Fantasies (usually with ties to some thinly concealed race war) , and then breaking down for them exactly how they've basically expended all this time, energy and money to tether themselves up to an underground Kwiki-Mart for marauding hordes to easily overwhelm and loot for resources if their fantasies ever actually played out.

No, they're just buying a ticket to a Fantasyland of their own imagining... where they are bold visionaries who wield real power because they "took the necessary steps," and everyone else they know laments their own foolishness for doubting them. "Please forgive us, and HELP us!" they will all plead... while our wise protagonist lavishes a steady stream of I-told-you-so's and further cautionary tales upon them.
