Just holding it for a friend.

In a statement, Mr. Katz said the episode was "unfortunate."

"This should not overshadow the work I have done over the years for the public and my constituency," he said, adding, "I am confident that once the facts are presented that this will quickly be put to rest."

Fact: You had weed in your car. Pay your fine and move on.

Plus you're a republican in NY, one of the few in the nation that can assail the drug war as an overpriced boondoggle and get away with it.

"Once the facts are presented"?

The cops pulled you over for speeding, smelled weed in your car, then searched and found a bag of weed. What sort of "facts" are you going to present in your defense, Mister "I voted against legalizing medical marijuana but like to smoke it recreationally myself"?

I would like to see this guy get the maximum allowed penalty under the law. You know, the penalty we usually reserve for black teenagers caught for the very same thing.

I think he got the fine plus 40 hrs community service.

What, and lose police endorsements?

He's a Republican state assemblyman in New York, meaning he has roughly the same amount of clout as the intern to an assistant deputy dog-catcher.

Yes, Katz voted against medical marijuana. But nobody asked him about recreational marijuana.

If that were true, he might be looking at jail time for this. But I suspect he isn't.

It's a combination of the term "irony" and "irie."

Irie is a religious concept in RasTafari. Rastas view the consumption of ganja as a religious sacrament.

I'll leave it to others to define irony.

Not Subby.
