Ive seen hail not quite that large, but close.  And this was just a few weeks ago too.

I was driving to work, I drive about 20 miles from my place to there.  I got about halfway to work, it goes from a rain to hail, and it got more and more intense.  So I plod along on the highway and pass by folks parked under bridges and any overpass they can find.

Luckily the hail bombing my car was not huge, just a horrible sound of it constantly pelting my poor ride.  I was really afraid my car was going to look like a golf ball with hundreds of dimples all over it.  I was very lucky because I had no damage.

ANYWAYS...I drive through the storm, and get to work.  I was actually a few minutes early so I thought I'd get a quick bite to eat across the street.

Thats when I saw...them.  Golf ball sized (and they were larger than that) ice balls just all over the place.  And some larger than that by a good measure.  There was one person in the restaurant's parking lot taping up a giant hole in his back glass of his car.  Then it all clicked...this town was just seriously bombed by hail not 10 minutes before I got there.

I had co-workers with majorly peppered cars, dented hoods...fenders...destroyed glass.  It was a major mess.

Now, weeks later when I am driving around that part of town I still see cars with very destroyed glass.  Some folks (and God bless em) are too short on cash to run out and have it fixed, 'natch.  I saw one late model giant pick-up truck with what had to be hundreds of BIG dimples all over it.  I cant even imagine the sound that made.

In addition to all the auto damage, there were a lot of pretty messed up roofs too, so in some spots I can see not one but two different houses being fixed at the same time.

This was not quite baseball sized stuff, but if it was that large then even more folks would have been screwed.

So...Fark hail.  Fark it long and hard.

Yes, it really IS irrelevant.
Regardless of which party he's in, I bet the President gets a LOT of bars on his phone wherever he is...this ain't  1860, so he doesn't have to stay by the telegraph lines anymore...

Well a plague of killer rabbits could be hazardous since Im running low on holy hand grenades.

ReapTheChaos: poe_zlaw: why is it they always say the hailstones are bigger than what they really are? None of those are the size of a grapefruit. Except the actual grapefruit.  Like we can't see they are all smaller than the grapefruit.  They always say "golf ball sized hail" when it is really about the size of a grape.  Are these the same people that come up with the street value of illegal drugs?

[foxnewsinsider.com image 780x439]

You might want to get your eyes checked because that one in the front is pretty much the size of that grapefruit behind it.

What you lack is a sense of perspective.

You know, as someone who has been a big kaiju fan for, what, 40 years now, the adjective "monster-sized" has a certain expectation of size, and this doesn't qualify.

/Tunguska was monster-sized hail.

Let's think about this for a minute:  Precipitation is water falling from the sky.  Tunguska was a cometary fragment, almost all water, falling from the sky.

Really, not significantly different in composition than a hailstone.

/It was a joke, Son.

Precipitation consists of water evaporated from the Earth's surface. Words have meanings.

Tunguska was a cometary fragment, almost all water,

I don't think anyone has proven whether Tunguska was a comet fragment or an asteroid. And while comets consist largely of frozen water (and gasses), meteorites are mostly mineral. Because when comets cause meteors, it's because their ice begins to vaporize as they get closer to the sun, which releases solid fragments, i.e minerals and metals.
If the Tunguska meteor had been mostly ice, it would have disintegrated in the upper atmosphere.

Really, not significantly different in composition than a hailstone.

Except for the mineral composition.

/It was a joke, Son.

A really bad one, kid, with a punchline relying on ignorance.

True.  In fact, those local affiliates usually even practice real journalism.  I really shouldn't have lumped them in.

Actually, no...that's from a long-standing GURPS Supers campaign...where my character is a small, amorphous predatory alien with questionable morals, who appropriates human bodies so he can pass in society (once he's stunned the host and dissolved it's brain to give himself some tentacle room up there in the cranium).  His day job is a NYC coroner, so he's always got lots of spare "clothes" to wear...and he's got a sideline in organ-legging, since like all public servants he considers himself underpaid.  He's very, very old, and quite sentimental; he still has his first pharoah's canopic jars, and the Luger Dr. Mengele gave him in Argentina.  An inquisitive observer might note the pharoah's brain jar is empty.

I like to creep out my fellow players by measuring their skulls "just in case"...

I love sci fi in general, but never really got into the any of the SG series.  Maybe because I liked the original movie, right up to the last scene, which struck me as hokey.

I may give the series another chance at some point, since I'm also a bit disappointed with the new Trek franchise...

Stealing from the greats is a good start, but real success lies in developing your own material. And maybe show a little respect for your audience and don't dumb it down so much; we're not on the entertainment tab.

Nice. [shudder]

I would give a year of my life for SG to be actually real and the series (like the "meta" Wormhole Extreme episode) was simply a cover for Plausible Deniability purposes.
