I butt-dialed the NZ version of 911, they just sent me a text message telling me to stop farking around.

I pocket dialed 911 about fifteen times (sometimes multiple times in a row) before I figured out it was because when my phone is locked the numbers nine and one still work. Now I don't lock it so it pocket dials either people on my contacts or the last number I've talked too.
/Or it texts random people

Usually when my butt dials the phone, it's to tell the Thai food restaurant not to let me have the extra spicy pork again.
Then I have some drinks, and it drunk-butt dials my ex-girlfriend to tell her I miss her finger.
My butt is such an a-hole.

I more surprised people are still butt dialing.

Ahh the butt-dial.  On a slow shift, it can be the dispatcher's best friend.  If you can imagine it, I've heard it in progress. On a busy night though, it's only slightly less annoying than a toddler with a disconnected cell.

/Just worked my last Civil Sunday in a 911 center.  It was anything but civil!

Once again the NSA covering up their listening operations by causing someone's phone to dial 9-1-1.

How does this even happen? I mean... seriously. How? And not just them, but other people have done it.

Is there something about certain cell phones that if you mash the shiat out of all the buttons all at once for a period of time, it just defaults to 9-1-1 and lets 'er rip? Mine won't do that, even after I unlock it. Because it's kind of hard to accidentally hit 9, then get to the other corner and accidentally hit 1, and then accidentally hit 1 again (but not twice again)... and then somehow not manage to hit anything else before you accidentally hit Send which is usually somewhere back below the single 9 you mashed the first time.

I see cell phones in the back of girls' tight jeans everyday.  Some of their butts are so small, I'm surprised they aren't texting 911 with their location.

One time my butt dialed the contest number for a local radio station. I won a trip to Cancun, a new car and a year's supply of corn chips.

A lot of phones, when screen locked, still have an 'emergency call' button.  I guess so that if someone finds you lying helplessly, and needs to call for assistance for you, they can use your phone to summon help even if it's locked. So, it really only takes one or two errant touchscreen mashings on some phones.

My old feature phone had an annoying feature that even with the keypad locked, the 9 and 1 keys still worked. On top of that it was a candybar form-factor, where the keypad is always exposed. So stick it in your pocket, and it will continually randomly press the '9' and '1' digits while you walk around. All other digits are ignored, like they should. Good chance you'll accidentally end up calling 911 in the process. (Happened twice to me, that I know of)

Supposedly a safety feature (always have the ability to call 9-1-1) but in reality it was really freakin' annoying.

But even with modern smartphones, I've seen them where there's a 'call emergency services' option right on the lock screen, which can be activated by a single swipe.

I have a phone that does this. You can mash 000, 999, 911, 111, and other combinations and it will ask "Emergency Call?" which won't cancel until you hit "END". So eventually you end up mashing "SEND", and BAM, next thing I know I'm getting a call from my local PD.

I'm glad they were understanding. I farking hate that phone.

I keep seeing these stories. Do cell phones have some kind of secret 911 button that I'm not aware of? The only other thing I can think of is people have it in their contacts. But why would anyone do that? Are they afraid they'll forget the number?

Even when locked, many phones allow for your to hit the 9-1-1-dial combination for emergencies.  Unfortunately many people wear skinny jeans or otherwise keep their phones is stupid places which inevitably manages to depress the keys in a way that trigger the call.  Some kid was sitting behind me on a bus a while back and out of the blue took a call from a 911 operator whom he'd buttdialed.  After apologizing for the error he proceeded to complaint to his friend how often it happens, but he wouldn't put his phone somewhere different because you know, he's an self-centered idiot.

My blackberry up to an update some time back, if you'd hit any button you'd get three options:
Unlock
Emergency call
Cancel

If the infrared gets any movement (since you are mashing it) it will scroll. The problem used to be that once you select emergency call, it would call without any need for secondary verification.
They wizened up to that, and when I updated the phone found that now when you select emergency call you'd have to specifically hit send. Others it won't call.

Before the update, my toddler was playing with my locked phone and I thought "phone's locked, who cares." A couple of minutes later I get a call, and it's the cops asking if I was in any trouble.
/not a cool story
