I'll consider him a reformer when he a) owns up to the fact that the institution he heads has, for centuries, aided and abetted rapists, child molesters and all manner of criminals, while exploiting the poor and desperate he enjoins us to care about, and b) tries to make it right by actually changing the way things are run.

I don't mean a generalized non-aology apology.  I mean an admission of guilt on behalf of the church as an entity, and change.  He's the pope, he can decide to do it.

Let's leave politics out of this and call it a separation of church and state.

You forgot the fondling of altar boys. That wears a guy out, especially when they resist. Then you got to break out the paddles and the St.Andrew's cross, getting it upright is a biatch.

IMHO, you'll be waiting a while.  No bad shoe will drop, but no good one will, either.  He'll keep talking and insisting the Church is about all these charitable acts, and advocate for kindness... and nothing will change.  Priests will still abuse their power, little old ladies will put money in the offering plate rather than buy food, children will be indoctrinated to devote all to their god and his representatives on earth in the hope of a posthumous reward, and nothing - Nothing - will change.

I sincerely hope I am wrong.  But I don't think so.

Yeah, the church is actually responsible for a lot of rapes, and then covering up said number of rapes. It's not schtick.

Okay, how about this schtick:

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH STILL AIDS AND ABETS CHILD RAPISTS.  THE PROBLEM HAS NOT CHANGED, EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN PUBLIC FOR TEN YEARS.  THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS, BY DEFINITION, AN EVIL ORGANIZATION.

Yeah because who cares that this shiat is still happening and being covered up, right? There's lots more important things like not saying stuff you're tired of hearing.

//Tell you what, If 1 years goes by without me hearing a story about some priest fondling anything, or some bishop or archdiocese covering it up. I'll never mention altar boys again. Till then I'll keep on about an institution that lies, cheats and steals from the very people they supposedly care the most about.

But it still remains just as true as it did ten years ago. Do you ever have any qualms about financially supporting an institution that systematically enables and then covers up for pedophiles?

Benevolent Misanthrope: EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN PUBLIC FOR TEN YEARS

Centuries. It's been public for centuries and guess what? No one cares enough to do anything about it.  No one in the church.  No national government.  No international law enforcement cooperation.  Nothing.  It likely won't ever change because people don't seem to really want it to.

I think it's more a case of ingrained reverence for churches in the Christian tradition.  They've spent nearly 2,000 years perfecting the art of creating an entire class of servile f*ckwits.

You can never say you are an "ex-Jew." Whether you like it or not, you are Jewish. Right now it seems pretty cool to be a Portlandian Jew. Very trendy.

And families cover up that shiat far more often than the Catholic church does. Clearly the issue is on a much larger scale in the church but this is so much more a general cultural problem than a Catholic problem.

And none of them are part of an international organization that purposely shelters pedophiles, covers up evidence, prevents the reporting of abuse, and blames the victims.
Maybe if the catholic church didn't have a centuries old history of some of the most vile and reprehensible behavior mankind has exhibited people would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Granted, even one case is one too many.  But priests commit far fewer of these acts than one would expect if Fark is the only news site they use.

Some human beings (mostly male) sexually abuse children. All Catholic priests are human males.
