By any non-golf definition, I think he hit it into the nearest point of relief.

"Taking relief" means moving your ball away from something that's interfering with your shot.  Depending what it is there may or may not be a penalty.

"Nearest point of relief" is the closest spot to your ball that's clear of the thing you're taking relief from.
