'This is about trust,' Price said.

In that we can trust that the GOP will do absolutely nothing useful and continue to insist on investigations into every single thing they can think of until they find a "scandal" that sticks leading up to the 2014 mid-terms?

That's what my Brit friend would call a "dead cert".

Hell, I don't think even Vegas has a line out on the possibility of that not happening.

I have a lot of trouble following the thread of thought.  In the wake of Citizen's United, there was a huge influx of cash money from certain moneyed interests to form new tax exempt "social welfare" groups in 2010.  The IRS made it a priority to scrutinize them (not nearly closely enough, as far as I can tell, they are not social welfare groups).

And, they continued to enjoy tax-exempt status while inquiries proceeded.  So no harm has been done.  Certainly no crime, aside from the Citizen's United ruling itself, which is a vulgar crime against the American people and political discourse here.

Argh. As a former medical fraud auditor, this whole IRS thing really pisses me off because the administration should have used it to their advantage.

"Mr. President, are you aware of a claim that the IRS purposely targeted tea party and conservative groups?"

"I have spoken with the acting commissioner of the IRS. He has informed me that IRS analysts, using advanced computer data mining techniques, identified distinct trends in applications for tax exempt status that were highly suspect and did not fit the descriptions of legitimate 501c4 social welfare organizations. Further analysis revealed distinct key words coming up repeatedly, including "tea party", among others. I applaud the IRS for performing its duties with due diligence in investigating potential tax fraud and ensuring that all elements of our society contribute their fair share."

Now, back to you, G.O.Party of Tax Evasion.

Why does the does it seem that the right can't finish a cogent thought about a female Democrat without either extolling how ugly they find her or wish physical violence against her?

Kinda the same idea from the commencement speech thread.

How long does the right think that they can keep dismissing any achievement a woman accomplishes by bringing up her appearance before women just say "Fark off!!"?

Me and all.

I'm still looking for someone to point to even one needy individual who has befitted from these gobs of tax exempt cash flying around with the doubling of "primarily social welfare" 501s post CU decision.

Not seeing anything.

Basically what I do see here is the GOP trying to funnel a ton of cash into campaigns from a undisclosed donor's list while maintaining tax free status *and* (and this is the kicker) simultaneously whining about how freaking oppressed they are.

Their unrelenting attempts to try to push a narrative that portrays Obama into a Nixon-esque figure who was using the IRS to fark with his political opponents here is just the icing on their Failcake.

The flip side of that I guess would be how, presented with an obvious light weight in the political arena, they feel the need to constantly comment on how pretty she is as if that makes her somehow competent.

I doubt it. The printing press was the biggest form of mass media at the time. They probably didn't imagine much beyond its use. The founding fathers of this country were smart and had some great ideas, but they did not have any special window into the future. We interpret their writings through a modern lens and find parallels to our own time, much like people do when interpreting any writing from a different time period.

Which is exactly what the President is in the process of doing.

You think anyone in the White House - much less the President - shed a tear over the poor, poor, Bush-appointed acting IRS commissioner? Or hesitated for an instant to cheerily shaft the Republicans by 'accepting the resignation' of one of their own & instigated at their own silly expense?

Fark no. And if he'd said something along the lines of what you suggest, it would've sounded nice for the eight seconds it took everyone to realize that it was a complete lie. Advanced data-mining? Clever application of effort? In an Internal Revenue Service 'led' by a farkwit like Miller? No deal.

What we have instead is classic bureaucratic farkuppery: paperwork collecting in ever-increasing quantity; questions from 'working level' staff unanswered; zero direction from supervisors (who, being ill-informed themselves, had little if any helpful direction to give) and a quantity of foot-dragging by the DC-based 'legal staff' that is downright appalling.

Frankly, heads should roll at IRS. And if the President feels the need to politically 'triangulate' towards the GOP claims of poutrage, fine by me. Perhaps - likely - some fresh thinking over there in Revenue-land is exactly what's needed ... and it's awfully nice of Rep. Boehner & Co. to provide the covering fire.

Lsherm: No one enjoyed tax exempt status, these were new applications.

You might think so, but no. These tax exemptions are self-declaring: the group declares that it is a 501(c)4 organization and files the paperwork, and they don't pay taxes on the money. The IRS then reviews it and tells those organizations that don't qualify that they don't qualify. Until and unless that happens, they get all the 501(c)4 benefits.

So, yeah, there was no harm done. Not that being harmed has ever been a requirement for right-wingers to cry like infants.

I don't think that is their goal. I believe their only goal (now) is the Fox bottom line. They make an awful lot of profit for Fox. It they could make more money selling the right-wing down the hole, they would discover Teddy Roosevelt Progressive politics in a minute, and decry the mouth breathers.
