For those of you doing so, it's officially time to stop using Tumblr.

Tumblr is like the mid point between blogging and tweeting.

$1.1bn? I could grab a team of half a dozen guys and have it licked in a couple of months. At worst.

Does anyone use Yahoo anymore?  It was in decline fifteen years ago.

I use Flickr, which is a Yahoo service. I am also on a couple Yahoo based mailing lists ("groups").

Was the deal cash or stock?

2013-05-19 04:16:21 PM
Yes, because it worked out so well the last time Yahoo bought a company that had a name missing an e.

I am shocked, SHOCKED to hear that a self-aggrandizing sociopath who's been relatively unopposed in her career simply because she is a woman would make poor decisions when given the helm. Shocked.

I'm sure it will work out better than the $2 billion they gave Mark Cuban for Broadcast.com.

Name recognition is everything on the Internet.  (Well, close to everything).  No idea if its worth $1.1 billion, but lets face it... I could find a team of programmers to essentially build Facebook from scratch.  There's not much to it.  But would it be worth anything?  Nope.

Now that I think about it, Yahoo is to JC Penney as Microsoft is to WalMart, Apple is to Target, and Google is to Amazon.

Failed mergers are a dime a dozen.  To really top the list you have to do a Nokia - rule the cell phone market, and then decide to "shake up" your company.  Split it into competing units.  Bring 110% of your innovation to a complete halt.

All great failures follow this pattern of relying on a single figurehead to rule the kingdom.  More often than not, they're not wearing any clothes, except those provided by their supporting cast.

If I were of a paranoid stock, I'd ask if Google gave Yahoo 1.6 billion dollars to buy Tumblr & auger it into the ground, just so Google stood a better chance with their social media attempts. Google doesn't get the negative press, Yahoo gets the dough, Tumblr gets the ax, and we're all busy laughing at Yahoo to notice that it was Google what committed evil.

I'm not saying that's what happened - I'm just manufacturing conjecture given Google's proclivities toward evil and cronyism lately.

Is this along the lines of Elop getting hired as the Nokia CEO and pushing Windows Mobile to drive Nokia into the ground?

It seems we're all in agreement about the reeling blow that's just been dealt to niche porn here. I'll just add that I'm particularly distraught about the possible termination of several quite good daddygirl blogs.

Come on, Yahoo! Do the right thing and don't kill off the daddygirl scene!

I figured that out when the only thing I could find on it were radical feminists and "social justice warriors" that prefer to limit their involvement in anything to the comfort of their computer chairs. Strangely enough, all of them seem to want to vomit whenever responding or re-blogging.

Then all you need is 12 billion page views and 184 million unique visitors per month and you'll be better than Tumblr.

I have  no idea how that makes money, but it seems important to a lot of people.

The only reason Tumblr grew to be worth that much is because of the absurd amounts of porn to be found on it. Yahoo will undoubtedly try to remove that element from the service, unwittingly destroying most of the value of their purchase overnight.

You think the chronic masturbators looking at T&A are upset about the possible loss of their porn?  Porn like that you can find for free anywhere.

You should see how upset the fangirls are.  Do not try and separate a teenage girl from her slash.

/Good luck with that, Yahoo!

Nope. Fair play if they got $1.1bn for it. I'm one of those people who has a fault that I can't believe that people will buy some of the stupid shiat put on offer (see also: AOL buying Huffington Post).

I'm just saying that if Yahoo wanted to have tumblr-like functionality, they could have built it for a lot less.
