fusillade762: Oh shiat. No, I didn't. My bad.

*slinks out of thread*

Oh, no, don't worry about it. A simple misunderstanding.

/I will grudgingly admit Abba is very catchy and pleasant, I liked them a bit back in the day, but not really my cup of tea. When I found out that they were G. Gordon Liddy's favorite band (really), that was the last straw.

Well if you can buy Abba Gold for $7.99 on Itunes and The Beatles sgt peeper is $12.99 (in the US assuming similar in the UK) there is a decided advantage.

I'm sure Paul and Ringo and George and John's legal heir will cry themselves to sleep on huge piles of cash tonight.

The awesomeness of Freddie looks down upon them from his perch atop the #1 spot.

\I get it, but as I saw in every milestone number music thread, numbers can be topped.  The awesome total package that was the Beatles, Queen and the rest will never be topped.

20 - Beatles
18 - Mariah Carey
17 - Elvis
13 - Michael
12 - Rhianna and Madonna

ABBA > half the musicians on this list

Uh, there are only 5 musicians included in that list. Whats your point
/ABBA sucks

Math's not your strong suit, eh?  I'll show the work:

ABBA > Mariah
ABBA > Madonna
ABBA > Rhianna

/ABBA sucking or not has no bearing on the truth of the above statements.

IMO I think Abba equals Madonna. I like them both in the sense they both had catchy pop tunes and were sexy. Niether belong in a Beatles discussion.

Abe Vigoda's Ghost: I am a long time Beatles fan. That said, St Peppers is my least favorite Beatles album. The stupid BeeGees movie made it worse.

There are only two good things about that movie

I actually see eight musicians on that list. Nine if you count Ringo.

I'm not really a fan but their success cannot be denied.

For all the people who are screaming that ABBA sux....how many of *your* favorite bands have been offered $1 Billion to reunite for a tour?  And how many of the bands that you think are the greatest TURNED DOWN this $1B offer?

Anyone?

Sergeant Pecker's Lonely Hearts Club Gang Bang: But I wouldn't mind a gang bang with the ABBA chicks.

Hmmm....I don't think you've thought this one through.  You do realize these women are in their mid 60s now, yes...?  But the pictures from the 70s look pretty good!

It's kinda like when Al Bundy was drooling over Emma Peel on an episode of the Avengers, and Bud rags him saying she must be near 100 years old.

"But she's on film, son.  If your mother was on film I'd still be having sex with her."

The Beatles were genius and Abba was a so-so pop band.

happydude45: The Beatles were genius and Abba was a so-so pop band.

Yes, the Beatles were genius....you get no argument there.  But there are a lot of people who dismiss them as so-so, I know a lot of people who don't care for them whatsoever.    And despite your personal musical opinions, to dismiss ABBA as "so-so" is ignorant.  If you dislike them, fine.  I was never a fan...I used to hear their songs a lot back in the day and they've never done anything for me.  I had one friend who loved to sing the chorus of Fernando in the most sarcastic way imaginable just to piss off people.

But they are one of the biggest and most profitable groups in history, and that is FACT.  So if someone says Vanilla Ice was also successful and also sold a lotta records, well....he's not even in the ballpark.

1- They are the 14th biggest selling musical act in history (yes, the Beatles are 1st)
2- Had only a 10yr run (closest in top 30 biggest sellers is Led Zepplin @ 12yrs)
2- Was Swedens biggest money maker for some years, 2nd only to Volvo
3- Along with Mike Nesmith, they are credited for developing the music video
4- Were also extremely successful in fashion and design
5- Had no interest in touring the US, they were so rich it didn't matter to them
5- Turned down $1B to reunite in 2000

The Beatles were offered $30M in the mid 70s, which adjusted for inflation is about $100M in 2000.  http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi

Oh, and Lorne Michaels offered them $3000 to appear on SNL....that was $1000 each if they decided not to pay Ringo.

Like ABBA or not, their level of success is rare...and if you consider the fact that they only made records for 10 years it's that much more impressive.

/If ya gotta problem, yo I'll solve it
//So check out this hook while my DJ revolves it

Another one is the Volvo thing.  A lotta people have called bullshiat on me for mentioning this.  It ain't bullshiat...

The thing is, I never knew any of this stuff about them....they were just another pop band from back in the day as far as I knew.  But I saw the documentary on them a few years back, and I was SHOCKED.  Never knew how big they were globally.  They were farkin' HUGE.

Total Albums sold by ABBA - 375 million (discounted bin included)
Total albums sold by The Beatles 500 million (never discounted)

Again, if John/George were alive and there was a one-off show vs. Abba doing a one-off show.   Abba would be in the audience at The Beatles.

My favorite band(s) continue touring because they love making music and performing it live. Money just pays the bills.
