Love the reporting there Lou: I didn't hear sound on this video. I dunno if that's normal, but this OTHER video didn't have sound. I suppose it's impossible to know!

I'd just like it if I could watch the whole video without buffering, backing up, pausing, cursing or praying. I never have this problem with other video sites.

Why yes youtube, I WOULD like to watch more than the first 20 seconds of every video. Thanks!

Jeez, just install Download Helper and rip that sucker and watch it offline.

For some stupid lame-ass reason, youtube videos that are embedded with only load if you pause it. It's really really REALLY annoying.

I have DSL and YouTube is now defaulting to 144p.

And it's still stopping to buffer every now and then.

/come on, my 1.3Mbps max download rate isn't setting the world on fire but it should do better than that

It's not just FIOS, pretty much all of the major telecoms are now apparently throttling youtube's caching servers (if I understand the technobabble I've been reading correctly).  There are some scripts that sorta fix it (I still have some problems, but not as bad).

I have 20Mbps cable, and Youtube still buffers at the standard 360p.  It plays perfectly at 480p or 720p.

I think Youtube is just a really shiatty website.

Ah, that's good to know.  I noticed it when I changed over from Cox to FIOS a month ago and was pretty irritated.  I've since blocked a number of addresses with my firewall, which apparently does something magical and improves it (which it appears to have done).

I'm only sorta tech savvy, so I ended up pretty much just following directions from people who know more than me.  However, based on my limited understanding of what they said, Youtube caches its videos on piece of shiat servers in cheap third world hellholes, which is where you'll see the stream data coming from if you look at the video details.  Recently big telecoms made data from said hellholes go REALLY slow.  You can use scripts to force your computer to refuse hellhole streams and stream directly from youtube's main servers, which sorta helps (still doesn't work as well as it did prior to a few months ago, but at least videos finish and only with a little buffering.  I recommend googling your specific telecom provider + youtube + buffering or slow and looking for a solution specific to you.

Your mileage may vary.  Good luck.

One of the problems affecting YouTube is that popularity and buzz is determined by the number of views. If you want your band to become noticed then you can cheat by using a service to raise your views - examples.

The upshot is that a lot of YouTube bandwidth is eaten up by IP address farms or zombie networks downloading the same video 100,000 times just to increase its popularity.

I bet all of these services will start using 144p which might help a little or it might just cause them to expand.

It actually is a stock C64. It just has one of the later 1541 drives added on, and the guy uses a programming trick to use the 1541's buffer as additional RAM. Which is still pretty impressive.

This could come in handy for some of the amateur footage on youporn and redtube, an effective 'vasaline on the lens' at viewer's discretion.

I think that my ISP throttles youtube, since I can watch plenty of other online video but Youtube is all buffery even at the 480p res. Something is better than nothing, so maybe the low rate will be watchable.

2013-05-19 03:25:42 PM
I'm on "dialup" a lot, if by dialup you mean tethered to a cell phone. That said, I can't watch anything at less than 360p.

However, when there's something I just want to listen to (which is rare, I listen to audio files, not videos) I knock it down to 240p. Now I can knock it down to 144 and save a little bandwidth and battery.

I had thought the 144p setting to be implemented only for the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon trailer as a joke.

30Mb here, and it still stalls on 360p, then downgrades to 144p.  Would it kill them to check if it's their end that's causing the stalling, and see that my connection can handle 1080p and jump to a higher resolution that's not as laggy?  Fark...

comcast 30mb connection has no problems playing any resolution on youtube. I can play 360 smoothly with less than 2 seconds buffering at the start on my 3g phone.

anything less than 360 isnt worth watching, Good for audio only i guess.

I normally load up a movie on youtube while falling asleep, so this would be cool for me. Usually make it 20 minutes or so before passing out.

Yeah, I don't know that anyone expects that a C64 obviously had enough memory to do any "video" longer than a few seconds at best, but, considering the graphics were exactly what was capabile with a C64, that was pretty good I thoughts.   There were probably some people with TVs in the early 80s who had worse reception than what that was displaying.

HeartBurnKid: I think Youtube is just a really shiatty website.

Yes and no.  No in that it's not going to be Youtube itself that is causing the problems but the various CDN's that Youtube use. Depending on which on of them you happen to be nearest too can get interesting if it's over subscribed (and it'll be one of the usual suspects CDN's).   You can probably find a set of firewall rules that'll block the usually oversubscribed delivery paths somewhere online... I remember seeing something like it once.

Yes Youtube is a really shiatty website because as you've just proven:  their is not way for the end user to differentiate between TimeWarner's CDN hating you and www.youtube.com hating you.   Personally I also knock points off because after this much development time, Google's reliance on ad revenue for pretty much everything and the ever present percentage of people such as yourself who 'always' get this issue.... it should really be managing things better on the backend.

420Gabriel: anything less than 360 isnt worth watching, Good for audio only i guess.

For decent audio you actually have to use HD as it pushed out half wy decent AAC.   The lower you go resolution wise the crappier the audio usually sounds.  Beyond giggles I'm not totally sure what use this resolution would be.

2013-05-20 02:21:37 AM
They implemented that resolution for Germany where the largest ISP will change their definition of flatrate to mean 75 GB a month. After you have used that, your high speed internet will be throttled to 384 kbit/s.
