How about a pool for the date the money runs out?

2013-05-19 08:26:31 AM
There was a long ass line for the lottery the other day at the grocery because the pot was so big. What's the logic in that? The bigger the pot, the less chance you have of winning.

That's not how the lottery works.

What could possibly go wrong with this?

Damn that's a lot of money. I'm jealous of whomever won it.

Probably talking to a financial planner, a lawyer and a mover. because I would get the hell out of there before the phone starts ringing off the hook with friends and relatives you never knew you had.

I grew up in Pasco County, where the winner was sold. Somebody is about to buy ALL the meth.

It's Zephyrhills so my bet is either a retired person from the Midwest/Northeast or a native Floridian.

I'm hoping it's either a large portion of the Zephyhills staff (they have a bottling plant there I assume) or an illegal alien migrant worker.

Only thing more depressing than not winning would be hitting all 5 white and no powerball and still have to drag my ass into work this morning at 0530.

5 numbers without powerball is 1 million even. You might have to go to work, but you'll care a whole lot less about what people have to say to you.

and your chances are exactly the same of winning (or losing really) no matter how many people play. 1 in 175 million-ish.

Eh, here in Missouri it goes to fund education programs in the state.

And considering how much they're underfunded right now, I'm more than happy to blow $10 on a Powerball ticket.

I won my $4 back. Screw you, South Carolina Board of Education, no money for you today!

My wife made me buy one as I went out to get some take out last night. Every. Single. Person. at the QuikTrip while I was there was buying multiple tickets. At least a dozen people.

I just don't get it, especially when these tickets are $2 now. Wonder what the ceiling is on Powerball tickets? $10? $20? If they eventually get the pots up to around a billion, I bet you'll eventually see people dropping $100 on Powerball without even thinking about it.

not gonna lie, you can film one hilarious reality TV series about a randomly selected Floridian that you hand a pile of $600 million clams to.

but unfortunately they would all come off as spin offs of pre-existing reality TV series which have already been developed.  ok, bad idea.

I can't imagine how a Floridian can mismanage hundreds of millions of dollars like someone in West Virginia did.

Season one: Florida
Season two: WV
Season three:  All Star Challenge : Florida vs. WV

I was thinking more like a survivor type show with 3-5 seasons minimum

oh and realistically , you can probably lower the cash bonus to more like $50k.  "I get to be on TV, AND get 50 grand? sign me up" so you could produce this show for really cheap.  and you get to laugh all the way to the bank when they put this show on "The Learning Channel"  its so hilarious that it's sad.

I remember hearing the lump sum option was about $350 million or so. Assuming that isn't taxes cutting it down, you wind up Erin about $175 million or so after the IRS takes their half.

In other words, for every $10 you spend on the lottery your state legislature moves $10 from the education budget to the buying-votes, self-aggrandizement, slush-fund and sexually-harassed-intern-payoff budget.

Nah, here in Missouri it gets pushed toward efforts to ban sharia law, Agenda 21, and Obamacare.

Our Legislature is run by morons.

Bought a couple of tickets. Got like 1 number right.

I don't know about the ceiling but I've seen people buy strips of $20 scratchoffs, then proceed to walk out to their $500 rusty car. I always wondered where they get the money to do that.

Only if they're buying more than one ticket per drawing.

It's 2 bucks, and it gives you a tiny chance to win millions, rather than a 0% chance to win.

If you can't afford 2 bucks, DO NOT BUY A TICKET.  But if you can drop the 2 bucks, it's nice to be able to dream.

The magic of human logic.
$2 is a pretty cheap price for dreaming these days.

Yet each time a lottery jackpot reaches record levels, someone conveniently wins and resets the jackpot. Why would random odds care that the jackpot is getting high? Shouldn't we have instances where 7 months go by and there is a $4 billion jackpot unable to be won?

It's not a raffle asking to pick a number between 1 and 175 mil... if the odds are 1 in 175 million in a lottery and 175 million people actually played, someone is not necessarily going to win as, you say, each individual's odds are the same as everyone.. like monkeys with typewriters. Additionally you're having people either guess themselves or the machine picks, I would think QuickPick is most people's choice - trying to align with a random event of air-lifted, numbered balls being selected.

Additionally, you have these similar format games in individual states/multi-states with similarly outrageous odds that are also constantly being reset every week or month. If the prizes go months at a time unclaimed, then many people would feel discouraged and stop playing.

It's not really a "conspiracy" because it's out there in the open...again, every time something like Powerball/Mega-Millions reach near record levels, someone wins... this is just not possible as a random event. The only conspiracy would be if some. not all, of these winners that appear as average Americans are in on it/splitting up the prize money.

Mehh, you can squabble about your lottery, me, I just won the Island.
