Almost two years ago my daughter graduated from Joplin High School. Today my last kid graduates from JHS. And we have a severe thunderstorm warning going on right now.

Don't know what the contingency plan is if the weather turns bad. I would expect someone there will have a weather radio handy. Two years ago nobody at the graduation knew bad weather was coming until the ceremony was over and people were leaving. There will probably be a few no shows. Whenever it sprinkles, people get jittery.

yeah i could imagine folks would be a bit on edge around there!

heck, i woke up to find my daughter sleeping on the couch this morning. when i asked her why..."wind was really loud in my room". friday night she and her mom and little brother were in the "safe room" (i.e. laundry room...our only room that is not adjacent to an outer wall) because of the high winds and threat of tornado-type storms, so she was a little scared when she heard the wind.

friday the nearest tornadoes that touched down were 80 or 90 miles to the west around graham, tx, but wednesday night there were 16 tornadoes touch down...nearest one being about 30 miles, but one was an ef4, and of course with storms all around no one really knows where the bad ones will hit.

Sorry subby, really should have gone with "Cyclones need to end the streak".

/Weather can hold off for 8 more days, my wife and kids are still up there.  Rest of my friends and family are of the "Sirens mean grab your phone or camcorder and hope you get your video on the news!" persuasion, so I've given up worrying about them.

Where I. Live doesn't get them often and honestly tornadoes in Ohio are seriously exacerbated by man-made changes, they still happened on occasion but not the same way, when the southern 2/3rds of the state was a giant forest the cool air acted as something of a buffer for storms off of the plains slowing their eastward travel significantly as did big swamp on the northwestern portion.

I think everyone in Iowa should settle in and watch The Wizard of Oz today.

Central plains will probably get slammed today.  Kansas, Oklahoma and Central Iowa are rating pretty high for a tornado ass beating.

In Kansas, they have tornado watch parties... it's a bit scary.

I've only been through one and it was when I was staying on a farm in Iowa. It happened in the middle of the night so I didn't get to see, but it scared the shiat out of me. You could feel the pressure drop and the whole house felt like it was about to go. But in the end, It only took out a tree and some fencing.

We have a few people here in Iowa who could use a good tornado. Rep. Steve King (R-etard) is desperately in need of a blow job.

The tornado-free streak might come to an end today.  NWS is saying that there is the possibility of severe storms with hail, tornadoes, the whole works.

We have GOT to end global warming so tornadoes can kill some peeps in Iowa.

As of the most recent convective outlook from the SPC, the risk of tornadoes is much less in Iowa than the risk to the south.  OKC, KC, Wichita, Tulsa, Springfield and Joplin residents should be lerts this afternoon/evening.

www.spc.noaa.gov
Probability of a tornado within 25 miles of a point.
Hatched Area: 10% or greater probability of EF2 - EF5 tornadoes within 25 miles of a point.

I was watching chasertv.com yesterday afternoon and a half dozen live feeds converged on this cone as it began to develop.  I watched the entire life-cycle of it, from several perspectives.  Today's probable outbreak should be quite well documented with many live feeds.  The chasers are thirsty this season, and have been drooling over this weekend for the last several days.

NO!

Iowa has had at least 1,000 tornadoes every day since the invention of the internal combustion engine. It is just underreporting.

And you idiots would know that if you would just read the IPCC report, specifically Section 128.a.2, entitled "Why news agencies will report Iowa has gone 358 days without a tornado in 2013, in spite of it having tornadoes every single day."

Remember, no matter what the data, and no matter how bad you thought it would be, it is really worse than you thought.

Looking at the radars out of Des Moines and La Cross, those fast moving South-to-North storms are always bad news in Iowa, especially in May.  They tend to have large hail, tornadoes and some pretty nasty straight-line winds.  if you get outflow ahead of the cell, and the cell is already moving at 50 to 60 mph, well, very bad things.

Ames, IA checking in here.  There doesn't seem to be any damage here, but it sounds like Huxley took a hit. (can't find any news on it yet though)  One of our building's residents was driving home from Des Moines on I-35 and saw it form to the west.
