At least in the movies, they take out the bad buy with a single shot to the head and then say something witty.  Sounds like the officer in this case just decided to unload and hope for the best.

If you have a hostage situation and you need to take more than one shot, you don't need to be taking the shot.  And killing the victim while leaving the perp alive is inexcusable.   If it's that tense of a situation, you really need the perp on the dead list.

I am not the anti-cop type but no shiat some of the most dangerous armed people in this country are cops. WTF is going on with their training? Last 20 years it seems to have become "point weapon in general direction of something that frightens you and keep pulling the trigger until the loud noises stop." No concept of clean target or clean background and firmly identified target, just point and empty mag.

There's no real downside for the Officer if he shoots the hostage.

In fact, if I were cynical, I'd point out that there's an upside.  If the perp lives, now he faces murder charges and the Officer's the hero who brought in a murderer.

During the 80's and PCP epidemic cops upped from 6 shooters to "wonder 9" high capacity pistols. A cop could unload a .38 special revolver into a PCP fulled suspect and they would just keep coming, so they need the added power. At the same time the number of cops with former military experience, and thus weapons training, went down. Now you have more violent criminals, more powerful weapons, and cops with less training.

I'll wait for the official report, but is it standard practice to fire 8 shots at someone holding a hostage in front of them?  Don't you guys get training about where the shot will go?

And then they upgraded to .40 S&W, and now they are shifting to .45.

I assume .50 AE is next, and Police will be shooting 12 ga slugs out of a pistol in my lifetime.

Will .45+410 ga do?

From the local news link:

"Police responded shortly after the 911 call. When they arrived, Smith told one of the hostages, the twin sister of the woman who was later shot, to go downstairs and tell police everything was OK. When she opened the door, she ran out and told officers there was a man with a gun.

"Police said two officers then entered the house and went up a narrow staircase. At that point, one of the officers saw Smith with Rebello in a headlock, and Smith pointed a gun at the officer.

"The officer then fired the fatal shots, police said."
I'm sure the girl mentioned her twin sister.  The cops had no goddamned business rushing up those stairs.

The cop who fired is ex-NYPD.

I almost want one of those for novelty value, but is .410 buckshot really more effective than a single .45 slug?

Now that I think about it, I doubt Police would use revolvers, and a semi that shoots something as long as a shotgun shell won't fit most human hands.

Maybe we'll see a revival of this 13 mm handgun?

Is not shooting hostages really in your job description?

Man with a gun is a risk to Officer safety.  Nothing else matters.  If a hostage gets killed, felony murder says it's the hostage taker's fault, so no harm, no foul.

Yes, seriously.

The Officer involved will never be named publicly, and if he is, he'll the hero who brought down a robber even though he placed seven slugs in the hostage and only one in the perp.  He'll spend a few days on sick leave, and then go back to work with a commendation for collaring a murderer.

What exactly is the downside?

Dean: No worries, Brock. I'll walk you through the written portion. Question 1: You're in Prague. A sniper's in the window above you. There's an alligator behind you, and a grizzly bear in front of you. What do you do? Do you-
Brock: Back somersault, pry off the alligator's jaw, use it as a boomerang to take out the sniper. When he falls out the window, the grizzly'll go straight for the easier meal.
Dean: Uh... the answer's C.

odd weapon, being a rocket you could stop it with your barehanded out of the barrel since it didn't reach terminal velocity till a few yards down range

Here we are again, blasting away because obviously some situation should've been handled differently (while at the comfort of typing away on a tablet in bed).

There was a time not so long ago that shiat happened and didn't warrant such scrutiny.  There's only one individual at fault here, the hostage taking perp.

The perp took the gun off the hostage and aimed at the cop.  This is what might possibly happen in that situation.  There's no winners.  The victim, her family, the cop, his family.  Quit overthinking this shiat.

Police have made it pretty clear that civilians aren't humans.

Look at the words they use.  They say N.H.I. meaning "no humans involved" when a civilian is shot, and they call us "sheeple" which sounds like we're just livestock to them.

Don't even get me started on "subject."  That makes them royalty and me a commoner?

This sounds mostly unfortunate, as opposed to otherwise.

If I was running from my house to meet police, with a loved one inside, I'd be yelling "You HAVE TO GO IN THERE!"

Even if the training is to wait for backup and set up a perimeter, I can see that being a hard situation for an officer to resist.
