Willie_The_Pimp: This is sad. Trail days is an annual gathering of hikers of the Appalachian Trail. Most of the people you find there are either current or former thru hikers. There are usually hundreds of hikers there and they hold a parade celebrating their accomplishment. That is what he plowed through.

I was standing on the pickup truck in the background shooting photos 30 seconds prior to the car showing up. Had jumped off to reenter the parade with the other 2013 hikers just before everything happened. Hikers are a close bunch, and this really shook a lot of folks. 2013 has been a crazy year with the unending winter, the norovirus, and six inches of rain in two or three days. This has eclipsed all that crazy.

This.  Also it's really fun too!  I walked in it on my hike in 2009 and again in 2010.  The hikers and locals all arm up with water pistols and water balloons.  The hikers walk through town and have a giant water fight with the spectators along the route.  It's my favorite part of Trail Days.

It was pretty amusing walking up the street afterward and seeing the signs posted saying no water balloons, for safety concerns.

DeadBaby:

It's harsh, but I have seen too many asshole elderly drivers in my time. You can say "Well 16 year olds cause wrecks, too" but they will only get better as time goes on. The elderly only get worse AND their ability to judge their own skills gets worse as well.

Short of putting them down, I think my plan is pretty nice overall.

You can thank our friends at AARP for this; they've convinced an entire generation that driving is a right (it isn't) regardless of ability and that businesses should give them discounts just because they haven't stopped breathing yet

HotWingAgenda: Rising_Zan_Samurai_Gunman: HotWingAgenda: skinink: The elderly driver wasn't a bad driver because he supposedly suffered a medical emergency which caused the accident. Hope they're all okay. At least it's only injuries and not deaths.

If he had any reason to believe he might have a medical emergency while driving that could cause someone else injury or death, he is a bad driver.

That would make every driver a bad driver because any driver could potentially have a medical emergency (heart attack, stroke, seizure) at any time, with or without a prior history of them.

That's not even close to how reasonable expectation works.

If his medical episode is unrelated to his age or a preexisting condition, it has everything to do with this situation. Anybody could have a stroke. Should nobody be allowed to drive? Should people with high blood pressure be allowed to drive? Who gets to decide what a "reasonable preexisting condition" is? I'm healthy, but have significant heart problems in my family history. Should I be barred from the road in case I have a heart attack?

HotWingAgenda: I spent 24 years in Virginia and never even heard of this Damascus place.  50 to 60 people must've been half the town's population.

/hope everyone recovers as fully as possible, and the driver gets punished

Yeah, how dare he have a medical problem while driving?  Let's get 'im!

FTA "according to Pokey Harris"

Only in a small Virginia town will you ever find someone with a name like this.

Remove drivers licenses from elderly, and you'll need much better public transportation.

Neither will happen.

My grandfather, RIP, knew enough to stop driving when he was in his 70s.
But if you've got a green caddy with handicapped plates and live in a hick town, I guess you're just entitled to keep doing whatever you want, whenever you want.

You won't be given a driver's license until you've proven you're old enough and responsible enough to safely operate a motor vehicle.

You won't lose your driver's license until you've killed innocent people at a farmer's market or local parade because road tests are expensive and nobody wants to confront grandpa and take his freedom away.

2013-05-19 03:28:47 PM
If you have a medical condition that could endanger others peoples' lives if you continue to drive, guess what you shouldn't be doing if you're "responsible"?

I see no problem with letting people who have sever cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy or narcolepsy drive well into their golden years.  It's not like they're likely to cause much trouble and denying them their rights is downright un-American. Pedestrians are just going to have to take the hit for freedom.

I can top that wackiness easily. You know the Shiners, right? The peeps with the funny hats that drive those zany little motorcycle type deals in parades? A few years back in my hometown during a parade one lost control which led to more than one losing control which lead to a lot of tiny motorcycles crashing into a crowd of spectators causing a not-so tiny deal of damage and trauma. If I were there I would have been too busy saying: "No way that's going to happen." to think fast.

I must have skimmed over the part where someone jumped in the car and removed the keys.

So was Nogrhi (though I changed it 'cause no one could pronounce it).  Hope our hiker friends are okay.

Hiya Drifter!
