Girl Bond or black Bond? Discuss.

/Hey, if people can imagine a girl Doctor Who, why not a girl 007?

Craig's signed for another two pictures. I hope the films maintain the calibre we've seen so far. Quantum of Solace is not a terrible film, but moving Mr White off screen is a flaw as it obscures the connection to the revenge plot and reduces the size of the Quantum group to essentially a handful of people. This would have been fine if we realize they're basically a corrupt investment group but still we had no sense of scale.

'We have people everywhere...'

Saying it is one thing, showing it is what they needed to do.

One thing that has happened with the 007 pictures is that the calibre of the cinematography has been increasing greatly. No, really. I hope the next film is as good looking as Skyfall. However, the films have been adrift musically for some time. I think the last good score they had was the first half of Tomorrow Never Dies. I think the first half of that score was done during the storyboarding phase and written sequentially. Once Brosnan gets to China, the music sorta never really comes together again, probably for wont of time.

One thing I'd like to see is a less of a 'the villian is a genius with computers' trope.

This. I miss the old James Bond super villains who lived in volcano island lairs, had legions of henchmen in ill-fitting spandex, and used giants space lasers to get what they want. Today's villains are just nerds who want to do something lame, like control the stock exchange or take over the world's supply of cheese, or something.

So, Christian Bale as Bond with Michael Caine as Q.

Before anyone gets into the whole question-answer about Bond being played by different actors, and why Craig's run contradicts some things, it's like this:

The original run of Bond films leading all the way up to Brosnan's last film was ONE GUY who had a different face as the years went by. If you need a reason, just choose to accept that Bond got cosmetic surgery every few years. He IS a spy, after all.

The Craig films are an alternate continuity. Think of it as the difference between DC Comics' Earth One and DC Comics' Earth Two. The Bond of Craig's universe didn't get started until Casino Royale (the newest one) and there was a lot of stuff that happened off-screen between each of the three films.

Craig is not the old Bond. The old Bond was retired, and the series was rebooted.

I really really don't get the love for Nolan, I find his work overly derivative. I just feel he is able to get higher budgets and then apes others work.

If you accept that Bond is a code name, a female Bond would be reasonable.

No reason not to have a black Bond

Let me guess, you prefer Sean Connery as bond? Guess what I sort of did too, but here's the thing Mr Connery is too damn old to play James Bond. Here's the other thing, when taken in retrospective, those movies sort of suck, now before you rise your ire, I do enjoy them as films of their period, but I do remember they could have been much better then they were.

After all, how believable was Mr Connery as say a Japanese fisherman?

So in Die Another Day, Bond was 72 years old?

Craig's Bond brings the character back to a bruiser. Refined to a point, but even that point is essentially a tool to call on when you need every motherf*cker dead. Not neutralized, not contained, just f*cking dead. He is a bit of a throwback, and it's a nice touch. Then again, I liked the books, and sort of lost interest in the franchise when Roger Moore took it up. Craig is the Bond I've been looking for, for years.

Agreed. He's much more of a thug than the earlier Bonds. I grew up with the Roger Moore Bond so I have something of a soft spot for those movies, but they have NOT aged well.

Suck it Trollmitter.

The only thing I liked about Skyfall was the opening song....

I still can't believe so many people like that film.

My personal fantasy:

Quentin Tarentino DIRECTS

Samuel L. Jackson IS

James Bond

But, since I can't have that, I'll take Nolan piloting Craig's Bond through 2.5 hours of plothole-ridden hijinks. Should be a good time, and a worthy sacrifice of popcorn.

On a side note, I think the Bond Family Cemetery did more damage to the Bond Franchise in one scene than anything else I can think of in any film ever, with the possible exception of midichlorians. It was that bad. The next Bond Reboot is going to have to retcon that scene into the Outer Darkness just to be coherent.

Nolan has said parts of Dark Knight were inspired by Michael Mann's Heat and Inception is a very unoriginal concept see Cronenberg's Existenz for example. It's one thing to try to pay homage to previous works that you like, it's another to appear to be aping instead of making it your own. As for the money issue, money begets money if you have a bigger ad budget and studio more people will have the chance to see your work.

OK.  I actually read the article and I'm underwhelmed by the Bond news.  What struck me is that there is ANOTHER farking Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie in the works.  How many damned times do we need to film this?

2013-05-18 07:18:22 PM
Ladies and Gentlemen, let's be realistic for a moment. Daniel Craig is too old. Also, Skyfall was a blockbuster hit, and why not send him off with such a hit? Well we need a new Bond, a younger Bond for a new generation of teens and 20-somethings.

That is why we need Justin Bieber. Imagine it, he can do the opening song AND act was Britain's top spy. He's Canadian, so close enough!

For my role in this, one of the greatest sales pitches of the modern era, I ask for a mere 2% gross. Have your people call my people and let's do lunch.

If he can make it his own, it may be something. I've only seen bits and pieces of various Bond films, but I would consider watching this one.

If not, meh.

Too, I don't want to see another Batman with different weapons and enemies.

Skyfall's cinematographer was Roger Deakins, who's done a lot of the Coen Brothers movies, like No Country For Old Men and Fargo.  Nominated ten (I think times) and still hasn't won and it's a goddamn shame.

This 100%

The two Bonds that captured the character in the books best were Connery in From Russia With Love and Craig in Casino Royale (the only failure of which was M justifying whatshername's actions. The converation at the end should've ended with Bond saying "the biatch is dead", just like it did in the book).

2013-05-18 07:35:27 PM
I say the new Bond should be... JIM PARSONS!
Or maybe Simon Pegg.  Hey, it would breathe new life into the series.  Well, breathe something into it anyway.

I dunno, I suppose if we're going to have a black Bond, Idris Elba would be awesome and it would be a really good kick for his career.

But it doesn't really seem like diversity if it's always the same four or five black actors, does it?  It would be nice if a big role didn't go to Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, or Samuel L. Jackson.  Idris Elba seems to be being set up as the go-to token black guy to replace these guys as they're getting way too old.

At least he'll always have work, I guess.  And he's actually a really good actor.  I just think if they're going to go black for Bond, they should find someone who isn't already well known.

Craig is good as Bond. I liked Skyfall right up until the introduction of the Aston Martin. Quantum was boring. Casino Royale was an intro to Craig, but the villain sucked. It was like an old Maverick episode with the card game and a car with an AED.

Yeah. I thought Skyfall was decent. The Aston Martin was more for humor than anything; they should have just shown it and left it at that. Quantum was the worst of the three.

The funny part is that the card game in that is totally absurd. Anyone who's ever played Texas Hold'em even a couple of times should be able to see how silly it is. You really can't win by going all in if you have less money than the other players.

Yes, yes it did.

Although some of the cinit....cinimagr....the moving picture taking part was visually stunning and pretty, at the end of the movie my wife and looked at each with the same "WTF was that?!" look.
