I wonder if this David Foster Wallace commencement speech is any different than the one posted here tot he video tab last week!

Good enough speech, to boil it down: Stop thinking everything is about you, because it will make you miserable. True enough.

Probably not, but still cool.

He's right, and so is this guy:

I can't help but disagree with this guy. Sure, you shouldn't treat other people terribly just because you're having a bad day. But then again, if someone is a dick to me I don't see why I need to pretend that they're having a rough one. Certainly true in some scenarios, but some people are just a**holes.

This is a repeat from one week ago.

Shame that the mods don't read this site.

Here's another attitude adjuster. Didn't get posted in last week's post either.

DeltaPunch: Loves me some DFW. One of my favorites is this short little clip where he's asked about the usage of "prior to".

He has a point, but many people use a lot of longer synonyms simply to add some color or variety to what they're writing or saying.

There wasn't a speck of dust in there for me. But it was cool.

He's not talking about how you treat other people, he's talking about how you treat yourself.

From wiki:

Wallace received other treatments, including. When he returned to phenelzine, he found it had lost its effectiveness. In the months before his death, his depression became severe.

Goddamnit, I read this just after the little bit of tears from the speech.  Shame that such a collected, aware being was so alienated from life that he saw little choice but to leave life.

Yeah.  THAT's why it's dusty.

Sometimes someone says something (like this speech) that sounds so nice but at the same time so obvious that it shocks me that it needs to be said at all.  Why is this mindless, self centered frustration the "default setting" for so many people? And why is it a conscious choice to think otherwise?

It doesn't make sense to me. Maybe i have different default, but I don't give much thought to how other people perceive the world unless it's overly negative.

This is the most depressing speech ever.

Your live is going to be a sucky, meaningless grind, learn how to cope early.
