I think the bigger story is that Michael Jordan asses fans.

2013-05-18 01:10:12 PM
Bobcats owner Michael Jordan recently acknowledged that the Bobcats were doing field research to asses how fans felt about a possible change back to the old nickname.

Jeez, already? He just got married. Field research to asses is what got him divorced the last time.

2nd ed game name, rather than actual history.

And the article sort of kind of maybe sorta almost implies they're in the process of changing the name now.

/crappy article is crappy

Couple of months ago, they even have their logo/colors set.

But don't worry- even down here in NOLA no one really pays attention to our basketball team.  Not even sure why they're still here.  Its all Saints, 24/7.

Pelicans? I really never associated New Orleans with pelicans. Can't wait to see the silly mascot.

The pelican is the state bird of Louisiana, and is on its seal. But it's still a shiatty name for a basketball team. How about something appropriate, like the Jazz?  Oh.

They -did- try to get the Jazz name, but Utah refused to give it up.

The second comment on that page is hugely informative. For those that don't RTFA:

profphilbert:
"It's not homage to the old team. In the Revolution, the British ran into such fierce resistance around Charlotte they called it a "Hornets' Nest." The image came to be associated with the city from that time. The city's official seal includes a hornet nest on it. So it's a "natural" name for Charlotte teams that doesn't fit elsewhere (like the Minneapolis Lakers and the New Orleans Jazz made sense). There have been other Charlotte teams with that name: a minor league baseball team that existed the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, and I remember watching the Charlotte Hornets (who began as the New York Stars) of the World Football League."

The Hornets were the first professional sports team in the Carolinas and they were *huge* when they first came out. My elementary school even did field trips down there. Really stoked about getting the name back!

It cost every single councilman who voted for it their job too. Pissed everyone off. And the Bobcats wonder why nobody cares about them.

Just to be clear, your solution to something shiatty is to replace it with something shiattier?

I'm part of the (apparent) minority who likes the name. It's at least original, and I don't see how it's any more lame than Cardinals or Orioles or Knicks or a bunch of others names that people don't really think about because they're not new. Plus this article helped.

I'd think it's because the NBA didn't want the PR that would go with moving a team out of New Orleans after Katrina. If not for that I'm sure they would have been the team to move to OKC instead of Seattle. Of course, if Katrina hadn't happened then the Hornelicans would've never played in OKC temporarily and nobody would have seen OKC as a potential home for an NBA team and oh no I've gone cross-eyed.

Utah Moroni would morph too easily into Utah Morons.

That's a horrible post.  Seems as how you suck at posting, please consider doing it less.

//The pelican is actually a very cool bird.  Only ignorant derpsters will attest otherwise.

I'd just like to say that I think Louisiana Pelicans sounds much better than New Orleans Pelicans.  Flows off the tongue better.

The Pelicans has got to be the DUMBEST name for a pro sports team.  I can't believe the team is actually (and voluntarily) giving up a decent name to go with it.

Everyone who thinks Hornets is a better name than Pelicans for a New Orleans franchise is retarded.
