They should move to an 1 hour format. There's just not enough filler for 2 2 hours shows. That said, there's been no talent up to Adam Lambert's level, which makes the contesters somewhat boring.

One more terrible show and we should be able to triangulate who all the viewers are and end this scourge once and for all.

Hour format? Hell the results show could be 30 minutes.

Just turn it into the Gong show the auditions are the only fun parts of the program anyway.

Again I say you can either target the young white girl audience that made your show or you can try to go off the deep end and Urbanize it trying to draw in the black audience.  They tried the second one and failed miserably.

They realized that the young white girl audience watches the show and votes obsessively, but doesn't buy the music or go to the concerts after the finale, and quickly loses interest in the winner when they are distracted by the next manufactured boy band. Conversely, the urban/black audience that buys music and goes to concerts isn't interested in the pablum the show produces. They can make money from the show, or from the after-show, but not both.

Actually, their sweet spot is probably the suburban white wannabe-black urban audience. You know, M&M fans.

I think the show would be much more interesting if they made it a full-contact sport.

"Did you ever know that you're my heeeEEeeEEeroohoohoooh?  Everything I w--" BAM!!!

"Oh! Did you see that, Howard? A solid blow stopped that chorus cold! You gotta watch it when you try to sing Bette Midler while on the stage with Laqui'sha'na. She'll mess you up."

"That's right, Simon. Now Tiffany is going to have to come back with a great defense if she wants to finish singing that song. I'm not a fan of Bette Midler, so I'm kinda hoping she won't make it."

American Idol, The Voice, and shows similar to them are the biggest waste of broadcast spectrum EVER!

Maybe Americans are just getting smarter?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... sorry

Good News: The original hack talent show is dying

Bad News: The other, more recent & better hack talent show is alive and kicking.

That, or because more important shows were on that night such as Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, both were airing their season finales.

I wonder how much demographics plays into this? When Idol started, the "echo boomers" (children of the original Baby Boomers") would have been at peak age for watching this show. They've now aged out to be replaced by a much smaller cohort.

I prefer to do almost anything rather than watch that crap.  Root canals are less excruciating.

And that popular nerd blackface show. You know, the other other sign of the apocalypse.

There's so many problems with the show. The hosts are absolutely the biggest. They're going for drama instead of entertainment and its falling on its face. Didn't work with Paula/Simon, even worse with Mariah/Nikki. I gotta say the one thing I love the most about the Voice is the chemistry of the judges. They relate on a personal level, they bicker, they tease, and they actually care. As opposed to these judges (particularly Nikki and Mariah, who more than once were late to the show) who seemed to be coming in simply for a pay check.

Second problem I have is the results show. 10 years ago, you could pull that kind of crap where we have to wait a day for results. Today, we have the internet, text messaging, and cell phones. There's no freaking reason you shouldn't be able to announce the winners on the same day. Make the show 90 minutes long, you open up voting after 70 minutes with the last 20 minutes being concerts or filler. With you only getting rid of one person a week, making your audience wait through 58 minutes of crap on a third night is just ridiculous. You're killing yourself in the ratings with that sort of nonsense. I'll just DVR/fastforward or catch the result later that night online.

Third problem is something The Voice has excelled. Releasing the songs on iTunes afterwards is just smart business. Not sure if AI does this already, but if they aren't, they're stupid. And if they are, they're scamming some really stupid people. A lot of what is shown on the show is pretty much crap. It's raw, it's poorly rehearsed, and it shows. You're setting up the contestants to fail by not coaching them along properly. Some of the behind the stage stuff you hear says that they typically don't get much time with the song before the show, and that absolutely shows. Instead, the contestants are being pushed into promotional crap and concerts. You're giving America a half polished turd and you wonder why we look at your lineups with a resounding "meh".

Lastly, and this has been beaten to death already. Quit playing favorites. Stop politicking the audience to which singers you want and let the viewers decide. It's absolutely obvious when one singer has smoke, pyrotechnics, close ups and crane shots with a backup quartet of violinists... and then the other guy has two different color spotlights on an empty stage. You crammed the "this is the girls year" crap down our throats, which wasn't difficult given the even worse lineup of singers your judges pushed through.

Screw it, it's beyond redemption.

FWIW, AI does release studio versions of the songs on iTunes.

We didn't have those things in 2003?

It is not a talent show. It is a fully scripted "reality tv" show.
