Not mine.  All is right in the Commonwealth, the ruffed grouse is proper.

I have seen 32 of the 50 real state birds (counting shared goldfinches and such once per state) and 16 of the nominated state birds.

I don't mind the cactus wren but if Arizona's were to change a hummingbird would be more appropriate. Not sure what kind.

SC here, apparently our state bird is the only thing we've ever gotten right.

46. Virginia. Official state bird: northern cardinal
Just when I think I'm out, they suck me right back in. Shut up, Virginia.
What it should be: barred owl

Oh please, I see cardinals every day, I've never seen an owl

I've gotten pissed off at a lot of things in my life.  I don't think "birds" was ever one of them.

simplicimus: Didn't know Texas' was the Mockingbird.

It was made the state bird as a warning.  They are everywhere, annoying as hell and have a tendency to randomly attack people... just like Texans.

I'm pretty sure it's because they're common in the region and are already the state bird of multiple states and aren't exactly unique or special to Virginia.

FTA: 11. Hawaii. Official state bird: nene

I'm surprised the author didn't say it should be the ʻIo (Hawaiian Hawk.) That bird's a royal symbol (and what ʻIolani Palace is named for.)

Well, have they?!

That article was for the birds.

I love how the author of TFA started phoning it in around state #15...  And when I say "love," I mean this guy sucks donkey balls.

I just imagined the author drunk and yelling at an Audobon Guide. It was funnier.

I'd want NC to claim the Red-tailed Hawk. Chickadees are cute, but damnit, I see Red-tails often enough (one was even living in the neighborhood for a while, and nearly got a neighbor's chihuahua, but it misjudged the angle and clipped the house), and they're much more awesome birds than the things I tend to think of as what the cat eats when she wants a small snack.

Of course, the cat has eaten a few Cardinals (and bluebirds and blackbirds and...), too. I certainly agree with TFA that states need to quit with the Robins and Cardinals. Yeah, the Red-tail is all over the place, but they're cool birds.

I have seen a few before in the Howard Co. Montgomery Co. area and no they were not robbins. They are rare but they are still around.

The writer does have a point about all those other states that copied Illinois' state bird.

2013-05-17 11:01:28 PM
Cerulean warbler for NY?  The bird's range barely touches the state.  They should have chosen wild turkey or the turkey vulture.

Ohio's state bird should be the Passenger Pigeon. Yeah, I know they are extinct. We killed 'em all! Millions upon millions of them! That's just how we roll

I used to love the mockingbirds when they mocked the old car alarms, "weeoo weeoo weeoo rah rah rah rah..."

Haven't heard that in awhile.

Grew up in NW B-more. Saw them in my yard all the time. (No yard, no birds, anymore)
