I don't see how this could possibly go wrong

"You'll go as hard as you can go until you step over that edge," he said. "Some guys will miss it."

I wonder how many crewmen will die as a result?

No crewmembers to run over .

It's not as bad as it sounds because of the fewer number of cars participating, but still, that's insane

Seems kinda pointless and dangerous if you ask me. I mean you got Greg Biffle basically saying "we might not crash or we could have a huge crash won't know till we try". And there is no reason why they need no speed limit for qualifying or practice it gives them no advantage it just introduces unnecessary risk.

So...what's to stop a guy from doing a drive-through and going full bore down the pit-lane to shortcut the track?

1 - this is only for qualifying, where the qualifying format includes a pit stop.  The speed limit will return for the race.

2 - they can't get off the track and onto pit lane at full speed anyway, most likely a car staying on track would have still been faster.

No, it's getting folks interested in the qualifier. Sure, the interest is more morbid fascination than anything else, but if it puts asses in seats, well, there you go.

No speed limit? What about meth? Is there a meth limit?

Since NASCAR doesn't allow anti-lock brakes the skid marks should start in turn four.

Rules state you're not allowed to pass the pace car on a caution and you'd have to slow down too much to turn when green to be practical. That being said, just ask Bill Elliot why this is a bad idea.

NASCAR racing is more complicated than "just taking the shortest route".  There are "grooves" on the track that drivers find faster.  Look at most races- most of the time the drivers are driving all the way up on the wall.  There are lots of technical reasons this is sometimes (actually, often) faster.  However, note, that this is technically the longest way around the track.

I now have a reason to watch the qualifying.  Since nobody's allowed over the wall until their car comes to a complete stop, I don't think it will go too badly.  It's not like they are doing this during the race, where there are multiple cars on pit lane with their crews.  It will be interesting to see which drivers slide through their pit stalls and have to go back around to pit.
