It's a platform that is unnecessarily difficult to develop for, plus it has next to zero market penetration. No wonder EA doesn't want to spend a fortune developing a Wii U port if they'll never make the investment back in sales.

Madden would be awesome on it.

Oh, the COD servers for Nintendo need to be upgraded as well.  As more people play it is starting to strain resources.

But overall, the WiiU has been very nice indeed.

Almost:
Huh, guess you can't just go on selling underpowered consoles with graphics worse than what your competition released seven years ago and expect people to keep buying it.

/I really enjoyed all of one game on the Wii, Mario Kart.  My favorite Nintendo game prior to that was Mario64.

They first advertised the ability to use gameboys as second screens with the Gamecube I think. Imagine being able to call your play or even draw your own with out the other player being able to see. Not sure why it's not happened yet

When I went "meh" for a new Nintendo box, you're in trouble.

I want a controller that I don't know exists. The wii controller was good for that, the Wii-U not.

They should have called it "Super Wii," at least then shopper would realize it's a different product. Also "Super" is very Nintendo-y.

Fifa for Wii U is better than the PS3 and XBOX versions for some reason, so that is too bad.  My girlfriend can't stop playing Wii U and it's annoying during the basketball playoffs.  It's really because we didn't have the first Wii so she is just playing Zelda and all that now.  She is like a 15 year old boy with that thing, I have to make her go to bed at like 3 am on weeknights

I've been a Nintendo fanboy my whole life, and I have almost no interest in the Wii U.

Oh, I'd get one if it seemed to me like Nintendo really cares about it, but they don't. Every noteworthy game they've made lately has been for the 3DS.

A cool looking new Zelda? Yup, it's on the 3DS.

A new Luigi's Mansion? Yup, it's on the 3DS.

Paper Mario? Wario? A real Mario??? Yup, they're on the 3DS.

Seriously, the best they've given us for the Wii U has been another 2D Mario game that they could have developed in their sleep.

Even in the darkest days of the Gamecube, there was more to be excited about. Way more.

They've gotten REAL lazy since, oh, a couple years into the Wii's life.

Sad.

The first Madden released for the Wii - '07 - was atrocious.  The controls were god-awful bad to the point where it was refreshing to find a mechanic that was directly counter-intuitive to what you thought you were supposed to be doing.  For example, when on defense, you were moving down instead of up (as you do), but you had to push the Wiimote forward to use the hit stick or dive for the tackle.  This meant you often had to push the entire apparatus forward while at the same time pulling back on the analog stick.

This was so incredibly retarded and annoying that I swore off sports games for the Wii.

/and once the luster was off Wii Sports the console did nothing but collect dust

Have there been that many innovative titles for the xbox or ps3?

Difficulty: that couldn't have just as easily been titles for the other platforms?

Of course, I'd be happy if EA just stopped making games for every platform.

Doesn't seem like I'm missing out on much, though.

The Wii U was doomed from the beginning.  The reason the Wii took off so well is it offered a system for the non traditional gamer crowd,  such as old people and non tech friendly people.  Well those people don't care about having the newest system, they have no interest in buying something they basically already have.

I didn't really have much of an interest in the Wii U until I played one of the demo units at Target.  I really had fun playing whatever Mario game was set up for it.  I'd really like to own one now, but I just can't justify spending the money just to play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid (whenever those come out).  Maybe when the price drops, but right now, it's just not worth the money for the limited game selection.

I'll probably be getting a Wii U in the near future. Our Wii has developed some shaky drive issues and can't read disks anymore. Also, two controllers have stopped working and I just replaced a nunchuck about 3 months ago only to have it break last week. To get the new part for the Wii and replace the shiatty controllers would be a decent sized investment for an outdated system. I'd rather get the new one that would let us play all the old games.

The one Zelda game she is playing is totally reliant on the motion controller - you have to literally swing it to swing the sword, etc

It's only available on a few games, while others use the controller screen differently. Something like FIFA probably use it for selecting plays.

I think so.

I mean, with the Gamecube, there was generally something coming down the pike at most times that you could look forward to. Not A LOT, mind you, but I remember Nintendo putting more effort into the things it actually was working on.

The Gamecube Zeldas were great.

2013-05-17 02:11:08 PM
Hard to believe but the Nintendo console era is over. They will soon be a handheld-only company. You think it was jarring to play Sonic on non-Sega consoles? Get ready for Mario on the X-Box.

2013-05-17 02:12:02 PM
It is a shame Nintendo screwed up the marketing on this one so badly. It's a good console. I had one, but couldn't justify the price tag at the time (I was moving, and I needed the money) so I returned it.

If they dropped the price to $199 and made sure it was packed with one good game (Super Mario U, I'd say) then it would be a great buy. You'll get that much use out of it, at least.

I really hate EA these days, and it's hard to be upset when a console isn't getting their games, but unfortunately EA owns so many other companies now that it really kills the library. They bought THQ, which means no WWE wrestling titles on the Wii U now. They own NFL's license, so that means no NFL football on the Wii U now. They own too many good companies. Imagine how nice a Wii U version of Sim City would be with the ability to use the touch screen to interact with the city management and get data without switching views on the main screen!

Yep, this is a bad sign for Nintendo. I suspect the future of the big N is handheld gaming only.

I'm selective... albeit VERY selective.  I bought SSX because it was legitimately good, had no online pass, and no microtransactions.  I wanted my money to tell EA 'Yeah, see that's how I want my games'.  Apparently it wasn't enough.

And yeah I'll be mocked for this, but I'm still subscribed to The Old Republic.  It's where my friends are, and part of me still has SOME faith left in Bioware, even though they've lost most of their good staff.

The launch title should blow peoples socks off.  ZombiU looked like crap to me.  I like the idea of a controller with a touchpad built in for accuracy.  Seems like something any console could pull off.

2013-05-17 02:14:37 PM
I genuinely hope Nintendo starts releasing some new games for the Wii U very soon. I have one and ran out of games so it's just sitting there right now.

The graphics are really great on the console. From the few that pushed any sort of limits on the console, they are probably better already than most of what I've seen on the PS3/Xbox 360. The problem I've heard is that the processor is not so great on it... so basically they expect you to do most of the heavy lifting in games via the graphics processor. Well, that's fine and all, but I expect that will mean games with really great looking textures and character models and no physics.

Either way, I'm waiting for the new Rayman game, which is enough reason for me to own one a Wii U.

Nope. Only certain games do that. On most games, the tablet controller is used as a secondary display that gives data like maps, inventory, playbooks, etc. It can also interact with the main screen so you can use it as a thermal scanner or zoomed view. On the TV you'll see the normal scene, but on the gamepad you'll see the altered/zoomed-in view of that same scene.

It really is nifty, though. Nintendo just didn't make it clear to potential buyers HOW it was used.

Haven't ruled out getting a Wii U. Haven't ruled out a PS4, or whatever Microsoft calls their next thing either. I'll wait and see which is best.

When it comes to games, I tend to wait until the hype has died down, and then get everything $20 cheaper when I know it's going to be great.

I'm basically permanently a year behind when it comes to new games and gadgets. Got that way about 5 years ago when I was unemployed and had to cut some of my hobbies. Of course, as soon as I could afford to, I marched to the store and went home with an armload of the best goodies that I had missed, including a PS3.

It was a good decision. Everything was 30% cheaper, there was no hype machine at play, and I knew from friends what would be worth my time. Now I stay behind intentionally.

2013-05-17 02:18:12 PM
What a terrible article.  It doesn't even mention the reason WHY EA is not making games for WiiU at this time.

It's because the new Frostbite engine doesn't quite work on the WiiU hardware.  So at least this first set of games (Madden, Fifa, Battlefield 4) that use the new engine will not be on the system.

Interestingly enough, EA also has a FrostbiteGo engine in development for presumably mobile gaming, so perhaps that engine could work on WiiU down the road?

Also, perhaps the bigger reason is that exclusivity rumor with Xbox Infinity just won't go away.  It's already known that EA will have a presence at the unveil on Tuesday (after no showing the PS4 conference), so this just adds fuel to the fire and maybe the "Frostbite doesn't work on WiiU" is just a ruse?

We will know more on Tuesday.  I, for one, can't wait.

Well, we're using Dolphin emulator for now. It's pretty cool, looks great, but it's not as slick as the Wii. The + button doesn't work on one of our aftermarket controllers on Batman 2, but works for everything else just fine (and worked fine on the Wii), which means no two player on one of the only games the kids want to play together.

I'll take your word for it, the reviews where certainly better than I expected.  It just didn't look like a launch title.  No wow factor.  I applaud Nintendo for trying new things but there needs to be a "holy crap, this is the future of games" moment to really get people excited.

Nintendo needs to give up home consoles, focus on their handhelds, and push out their big games on other consoles.

The Wii itself was an aberration in sales and more people let it collect dust than anything because there was so much shovelware on it. Yes, there were some fun games, but even those are being put out on other consoles now excepting the Nintendo owned properties.

Go the Sega route and develop your big games for the PS3/PS4 and 360/720/whatevertheyllcallit and keep your hardware division handheld.

Because unless Nintendo comes out with something majorly game changing in the next cycle I fear they'll end up doing this not out of choice but future necessity.

I would consider using Dolphin had I a computer by my television that ran it at full speed. Unfortunately, my television-connected computer cannot even run GameCube games well. As such, I use USB Loader GX on my Wii, allowing me to play games directly from a 300MB hard drive.

T*HQ was actually sold off in bits and pieces to different companies. The WWE license is now owned by Take 2, but they've already announced that WWE 14 isn't coming out for Wii U since they don't consider it to be a viable platform ie: Why waste development time and dollars when we'll only sell eight copies.

See now that's a silly comment. Sure, there will be a few people (like the one who responded above me) that do somthing goofy with it to make that work.

The mass majority of people, as many on the internet decry, are casual gamers at best or use the wii as their Netflix player at worst. These folks wouldn;t know HOW to mod/emulate their WII to a point where they wouldn;t need to play off the disc.
