Who cares what they do with the all star race?  Hell, the whole fan vote thing was started in the first place to include popular drivers that weren't really competitive.

The Pro Bowl and NBA all star game are certainly known for the respect they show their sports.

Outside of the MLB all star game, every single one is nothing more than a showcase for the stars.  If anything, the NASCAR version tends to be more exciting because there's a pile of money on the table and (unless you get hurt or caught cheating) no championship implications so they'll take a lot more chances.

Oh, and she'll probably be on the lead lap anyhow.  The 17 most recent winners and Kurt Busch won't be in the 'race in' field.  Those 18 are the usual bulk of the top  20 at any given race, she usually runs somewhere in the twenties on fast 1 1/2 mile tracks, and this is only a total of 40 laps broken into a pair of 20 lap segments so neither physical endurance nor worn tires will be an issue.  All and all, barring crash or mechanical failure she should finish very well.

That was the old car, back when everybody was still biatching about IndyCar taking forever to roll the new ones out. I think this was the 2009 race when Briscoe won because I only remember the one caution. These Indy races at Kentucky were great. The crowd was minimal and as such it was a very open environment. We went through the trailers and all kinds of stuff. It's too bad they dropped that race. I know the crowds were small but it did lend to a kind of intimate fan/team experience.

So she'll get the fan vote, start the last segment from the back (since they will be lined up based on average finish of the other segments) and finish dead last or close too.

Who gives a fark?

0/10. You need to add some foreplay, there, before you just go for the "Danica Patrick haters are gay/Dale Earnhardt sucks" ATM.

And, yes, NASCAR does, indeed, suck, but it sucked long before the Danica Patrick Rule. This isn't the problem - it's just another symptom.

As opposed to MLB, where people want a guy who hasn't played an inning this year to be named an all star?

Wasn't there also a case a couple of years ago where Yao Ming got voted to the NBA all start game despite being injured most of the season?

Actually, no opposition at all. I lost respect for MLB long ago by the way they handled and continue to deal with Pete Rose versus how they handle the on-going steroid and chem abuse. When you go back and forth on how you handle issues based mostly on the fan reaction and money basis, the thing that allows it to be considered a true competitive sport, and not just an entertainment venue, is in serious danger of disappearing.

The fan vote thing has been around long enough, and it has been pretty flexible. There were a couple years where Dale, Jr. was a dead-on lock (though I thought his Winston victory would give him a guaranteed start anyway). The year that Kerry Earnhardt was racing in the Open for RCR, I think he was pretty much guaranteed, and I believe he even needed to make repairs to his car so he could start the all-star race.

It's just a story this year because there's no one who stands a chance of the fan vote above Danica.

Research first, Jeff, then post...

Kerry did win the fan vote, but crashed with 7 to go and was unable to race in the All-Star Race. 2004 was the first year with a fan vote.

There's a bit of a logical wrinkle at work here. If any old guy were to qualify for the NASCAR series and mostly finish around the middle of the pack, he probably wouldn't attract much attention, but people would generally agree that he is one of the best automobile racers in the country to even be on the track. But because Danica is a woman, she gets compared to the absolute best of the best racers, and is mocked and ridiculed for not routinely finishing in the top 5.

All all-star games/races have a bit of "WWE" in them.  That's the whole point.  To the fans, its either a fun exhibition or something useless they won't watch.

I'm a NASCAR fan, and I really don't care for the all-star race.  I may watch it if there's nothing else on.  But the goofy rule changes for the race don't bother me.

I mean, with the MLB all-star game... all 8 non-pitching starters are determined by fan vote!  This is a fan vote for one racer only.

That's a fair position.  I assumed (my mistake) that you were the typical fark NASCAR hater.

I've been a fan for all my life (45) and I'm seriously disappointed in the direction they're heading but IDGAF about what they do with the all star event (I'd rather they get rid of it).  It is just a high paying exhibition game.
