The type of gun is irrelevant. Any gun with the safety off and a round in the chamber will go off if the trigger is pulled. Same old worthless argument.

/gun should have been stored safely. Should not have been handled by drunk people with a round in the chamber AND the safety off.

/RIP young lady and condolences to husband, family and friends.

Um...yes there is.   Assault weapons might be up for debate, but assault rifles are most definitely a thing.

I may be stating the obvious, but if there had been someone else in the area who was armed, that never would have happened.  After all, it is absolute truth that the only way to stop someone with a weapon is someone else with a weapon.

Here's how it was explained to me, by an "Expert." Not a "Sharpshooter," Not a "Marksman."
1. All guns are loaded
2. Keep your booger-hooks off the bang switch, until it's time to shoot.
3. Know what's down-range.
4. Don't point at anything, unless you are going to shoot it.
5. All guns are loaded.
He probably also said that you're too goddamned stupid to use one of these things, until I show you how, and try not to break a nail when you pull the trigger.
It was his job, day in and day out, so I'll trust his opinion on it, over some random schmuck on the intarwebs,
I personally think that only people who have participated in "live-fire-drills" should carry concealed, and only people who train, at least once a month, should have a weapon at all.

Really? Because Webster's Dictionary would tend to disagree with you:

assault rifle  noun: any of various automatic or semiautomatic rifles with large capacity magazines designed for military use

And you wonder why you people are called "gun nuts." Hint: it's because you deny reality in regard to anything that has to do with regulating your precious.

The thing that baffles me is that Second Amendment supporters would get far more mileage if they could just make their product safe enough to at least allow the owner to handle it without accidentally killing himself or herself.

We've seen everything from a police instructor shooting himself in the leg while bragging about how he was the only one in the room professional enough to handle his Glock, to a school security guard blowing a hole in a student's leg while stuffing his gun in a glove box, to a tipsy blonde blowing her own head off with her brand-spankin'-new assault rifle while passing it around to friends for a look-see. It's hard to support a "guns are a useful tool when handled correctly" argument, as pushed by the NRA, when even trained gun owners shoot themselves with their own guns. They're tools that are apparently very easy to mishandle - perhaps pushing for improvements in the tool itself might be a better tack for the NRA to take, rather than pushing easier access to such a dangerous tool.

In order for that to happen

1. atrocious firearms handling
2. really crappy AK build (guns should never go bang simply because you drop them).

Indeed - she did everything wrong and I tend to think that she is (was) a more accurate example of the typical gun owner. It's very fortunate that her stupidity killed only herself.

Clearly, you have this all figured out. I mean really, what IS The difference between rights and privileges?

So how come convicted felons aren't allowed to own guns, even after completing their sentence? 2nd amendment says nothing about that. How come there's a background check and a waiting period? Again, nothing about that in the 2nd amendment. And how come full auto guns can't be manufactured or imported, and must all be registered in the NFA registry? Once again, nothing about that in the 2nd amendment. And what about short barreled rifles? Where in the 2nd amendment does it say that short barreled rifles are illegal? Doesn't that infringe your rights?

Gun ownership is already heavily regulated. Which makes sense, because we don't live in a freaking 18th century agrarian society anymore. It's time to adapt our laws and customs to the times and circumstances. If you don't do that, you look really silly, like Muslims or the Amish.

I generally stay out of the debates, but I would like to offer one small bit of constructive criticism.

Every time I read "Keep your booger hook off the bang switch" my estimation of your IQ drops by about 1/2, and I know I can't be the only one who has that reaction to that statement.

Is it so hard to say "Keep your finger off the trigger"?

It's the terminology used by instructors to explain gun safety to law enforcement trainees. So, yes. Yes it is so hard.

You'd think that the instructors would decide to take training more seriously. Obviously the hokey "make it sound cool" approach is not getting the safety message through to students.

You're BOTH retarded. Ive never seen or heard a gun instructor be anything but extremely professional and serious, anywhere, ever. Its Serious Business, and most people treat it as such.

If you're joking while firearms are involved in any capacity at all, you've already made a mistake.

Confirmation: Yes you are. It is called the AR because it was first developed by the ArmaLite corporation, who later sold the design to Colt, who kept the AR designation.
Addendum : Much like how the HK416 is built by Heckler & Kock, or the CZ-75 is built by Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod.

That is correct. AK-47, as mentioned in the article, stands for Attack Killer.

Objection: No, you're thinking of HK-47
www.geeklore.net
which stands for Hunter Killer.

Observation: You are both meatbags who know nothing about weapons.

Are people that stupid? Does it take all that much foresight to always check the chamber and keep your finger away from the trigger? And never pointing the damn thing at yourself or anyone else you don't intend to kill?

Is it that freakin hard to pull back the bolt and make sure the thing's unloaded? Why are so many people f-ing morons.

I was right when I said that 12 year old is the one that stabbed his little sister to death, and my prediction on this one is that the husband killed the wife. Motive you ask? Clear as the nose on your face...visiting couple wanted the legendary Eiffel Tower romp and wife wanted no part of it. Also, I am betting they continued drinking while swabbing the the brains off the stairs.

It's required they take one to get a license, isn't it?

I think the problem is more about people thinking guns are cool and fun, which leads to people not taking them as seriously as they should. They're just tools. The guns, that is.

Full disclosure: yes, pre 1996.

So then your anecdote actually discredits your position.

Ah..I think we had a misunderstanding...
I didn't live there past 1990 so I wouldn't know anything of 1996+.

Let me bring you up to speed:

Australia used to have a gun violence problem.
Mass shooting happens in 1996.
They ban a bunch of different types of guns.
They've had 1 in the intervening 17 years.

US has a number of mass shootings in the 2000s
We don't do anything
We continue to have mass shootings at a rate of several per year.

Do you understand this now? Does it make sense to you now?
