I am late to this wonderful outpouring of constructive discussion. I just drank half a fifth of Tito's vodka in 5 minutes and am now starting to read from the very top. "Let's see how long he lasts Jim"

This is amusing because I don't think any of the people you are carrying on this conversation with are gun nuts.

Are you implying that correlation is causation?

No, it's clearly unrelated that after a massive gun-control law was passed in 1996 all gun-related violence went down sharply in Australia.

Isolated incident.

Just like the last 10 times this happened this week.

violentsalvation: That sucks. I wish more people would take a simple firearms safety course before they decide to bring a gun into the home.

It's required they take one to get a license, isn't it?

I think the problem is more about people thinking guns are cool and fun, which leads to people not taking them as seriously as they should. They're just tools. The guns, that is.

That is correct. AK-47, as mentioned in the article, stands for Attack Killer.

There was a trolling comment in an earlier gun thread today that cracked me up.

"The AK-47 and AR-15 are Assault Rifles as designated by their manufacturers. Of course we all know "AR" stands for "Assault Rifle", but "AK" stands for "Assaulti Karabina", which is Russian for, you guessed it, "Assault Rifle." These were purpose-built for being fully machine gun automatic weapons for infantrymen to kill as many enemy as possible.

The numbers indicated the size of their ammo magazines but there have been aftermarket magazines developed which will hold 30 or 100 rounds, and even a backpack that will hold 1000 rounds."

Ha, that's good

That is definitely a large component to the problem for sure. I think I saw something that said accidental deaths from firearms are one of the leading causes of gun deaths. I could be mistaken though.

Here's how it was explained to me, by an "Expert." Not a "Sharpshooter," Not a "Marksman."
1. All guns are loaded
2. Keep your booger-hooks off the bang switch, until it's time to shoot.
3. Know what's down-range.
4. Don't point at anything, unless you are going to shoot it.
5. All guns are loaded.
He probably also said that you're too goddamned stupid to use one of these things, until I show you how, and try not to break a nail when you pull the trigger.
It was his job, day in and day out, so I'll trust his opinion on it, over some random schmuck on the intarwebs,
I personally think that only people who have participated in "live-fire-drills" should carry concealed, and only people who train, at least once a month, should have a weapon at all.

The thing that baffles me is that Second Amendment supporters would get far more mileage if they could just make their product safe enough to at least allow the owner to handle it without accidentally killing himself or herself.

We've seen everything from a police instructor shooting himself in the leg while bragging about how he was the only one in the room professional enough to handle his Glock, to a school security guard blowing a hole in a student's leg while stuffing his gun in a glove box, to a tipsy blonde blowing her own head off with her brand-spankin'-new assault rifle while passing it around to friends for a look-see. It's hard to support a "guns are a useful tool when handled correctly" argument, as pushed by the NRA, when even trained gun owners shoot themselves with their own guns. They're tools that are apparently very easy to mishandle - perhaps pushing for improvements in the tool itself might be a better tack for the NRA to take, rather than pushing easier access to such a dangerous tool.

I was right when I said that 12 year old is the one that stabbed his little sister to death, and my prediction on this one is that the husband killed the wife. Motive you ask? Clear as the nose on your face...visiting couple wanted the legendary Eiffel Tower romp and wife wanted no part of it. Also, I am betting they continued drinking while swabbing the the brains off the stairs.

You know, calling everyone who disagrees with you a 'nut' doesn't make you intelligent, it just makes you seem like a self congratulatory D-bag.  Believe it or not, you do not automatically have the moral high ground and have to make a convincing argument for your position, just like everyone else. I would go along with that. I don't see any problem with placing a few requirements in the system to keep people safer by making sure that people know what they are doing. Also make everyone sign a legal document of liability in the case where the rules have been broken. It's no different than anything else that involves hazardous force. One should be well informed and trained before being signed off to use it.

... but sadly it will never happen. It's all or nothing with both sides of the never-ending argument. There is no "middle of the road" with the people who push the hardest for/against guns. Nobody will ever agree on anything as long as people keep acting like complete cockbags... and doing so just seems to push people in the opposite direction.

I doubt there's a license for ownership. The NRA would have smothered that, it its sleep. (or shot it, where it stood)
In NC, you just have to get three people to say you're not a nut, get the Federal background check, and you can buy a pistol.

I just don't get it. I work around firearms for most the year. Literally one or two beside each cot. Most guests are beyond drunk at night around the campfire. People from all around Europe and north America. Yet I've never seen stupid stuff like accidental discharges. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe some people just don't deserve to own firearms. Guns are super safe as long as you are not looking down the shooty end of the barrel.

In my experience adrenaline is a far more dangerous thing to mix with firearms than booze. Not saying handling firearms while drunk is a sane pastime. I don't know where I'm going with this so. Yah! Guns!

Dearest firearms enthusiasts:

I generally stay out of the debates, but I would like to offer one small bit of constructive criticism.

Every time I read "Keep your booger hook off the bang switch" my estimation of your IQ drops by about 1/2, and I know I can't be the only one who has that reaction to that statement.

Is it so hard to say "Keep your finger off the trigger"?

Dimensio: If assault weapons were banned, she would have been restricted to a rifle without a pistol grip or collapsing stock, a bullet from which would have been substantially less lethal.

I bet it was to some degree the pistol grip (along with auto-loading action) that did her in. I suspect that the fellow to whom she was handing the gun accidently pulled the trigger. The shock of that probably triggered him to fire the second round and then drop the rifle altogether. His claim is that he does not know if he touched the gun before it was fired. Right dude. If that were possible (that guns just fire willy-nilly) then all guns should be banned immediately. He most likely grabbed the gun by its obvious (to him) handle, the pistol grip. I think he would have been less likely to shoot her with traditional furniture on the weapon.
/I also believe that they were both in error with their handling and that ultimately caused her accidental death.

More like because the gun related deaths per 100000 people in the UK is .20 versus more than ten times that in the US.

But, you know, again. Reality.

So the fark what? Go live in the damn UK. Your chances of getting shot in the U.S. are still farking are pretty damn remote. Stop being scared all of the time.
