To be fair, the husband is a dumbass for making this seem like a case of discrimination.

zobear: Why doesn't she get a note from her doctor?  If they refuse to make reasonable accommodations for her, she could file a complaint with the state's AG under ADA.

/seems pretty straightforward to me.

Of course she can do that, but the overarching issue here is that this school has a really farking stupid policy.

We need to study this school closely because they have managed to solve all the other problems that schools have.

puddleonfire: In such a natural place as Hawaii, why are the kids eating CRAP?

Have you ever been to a Hawaiian restaurant?  I am not kidding when I say that a common meal will be fried spam on top of white rice covered with gravy, with macaroni salad on the side.  Hawaii is not exactly known for healthy eating.

/mmm, Spam Loco

I'm sorry, that should have been "a fried egg on top of fried spam over white rice, covered with gravy."

Hawaii does not have any laws about requiring lunch or other breaks for their workers. Personally I think the school district are being jerks but that is within their rights.

Doesn't really matter if it works.

cubicghost: It sounds like during lunch preschool food is served. The teachers that wish to eat the preschool food are allowed to eat with the children. The teachers who do not want to take advantage of this for any reason are there to answer questions, but more likely to maintain order. This teacher does not want to eat the food the school provides so instead she has to eat on her lunch break.

What is the big deal?

That she does not in fact have a lunch break. Which is actually, far as I know, illegal.

puddleonfire: FTA: "They're making me eat my lunch away from everybody else just because my director feels uncomfortable about the situation."

Because the DIRECTOR knows they're feeding the kids total slop, AND he wants teachers to field questions from the kids about the food!!!
"You're eating manufactured GMO slop kid, and you'll have cancer at age 35."
"What's GMO?"
And so the can of worms is opened...............

In such a natural place as Hawaii, why are the kids eating CRAP?

What a huge conclusion to jump to.  Who says their food is crap?  Where, in the article, was there any mention of what the food is?  All we know is that it isn't "vegan organic".  It could be an entirely healthy meal, but has meat and canned peaches.

Many of you are jumping on the "the school food is crap" bandwagon without knowing what the school food is.

/ Not that it matters.  She still shouldn't eat something different in front of the kids if they allow kids to ask questions about the school meals.

orbister: StoPPeRmobile: Were you, as a child? I think you are full of it. I could give a fark what others ate as a child.

Small children (this is a preschool) are often very suspicious of new food. That may be an evolutionary advantage, but it can make it difficult to get them to try something new. One sure way to fail is to say "Here is some lovely, delicious food which will make to strong and healthy. Am I going to eat it too? Erm, no, because it's, I mean, erm, honest, you'll love it." If the school is serving muck, they should fix it, of course, but allowing staff to eat different food with the children is in general Not A Good Thing.

Bullies always find a way to bully.

Whatever, I think it's a crock. Never have seen a teacher eat the same food as the chillens. Must be a NY thing. Bunch of pussies everywhere else.

OK, food nuts, have fun with your "food sensitivity."

I probably wouldn't in preschool, but I've eaten an elementary-school lunch many a time (supplemented by the staff food like baked potatoes and salad bar in the back of the kitchen). Maybe not the best, but passable. And hey, lunch for two bucks.

PsychoLaurie: duenor: 53 to 24. yipes. that whole video is weird. the creepy gramps-got-the-girl kitchen kiss, the humongous orange-shirt guy in the tv station...

however, this is a preschool. their school, their rules. you don't like it, go work somewhere else. this isn't a public school.

Ah!! The 53 year old husband bagged himself a HAGO (Hot Asian Girls Only). Several of my friends here in Hawaii are all over that damn demographic, which is shallow shallow shallow. I've had a crush on a guy friend of mine for four years and while we often get close to becoming "more," invariably he meets some freaking HAGO who immediately decides she is jealous of how close me and the guy are and treats me like crap. His latest even refers to me as "His Other Girlfriend." No, there is no love for HAGOs.

Take your lunch and eat somewhere else, ya freaking HAGO.

/As for the big guy in the orange shirt, that's Sports Anchor Robert Kekaula ...

So you admit to wanting more with the guy and feeling like you're getting closer but his girlfriends are nuts for being jealous and somehow this is all the "HAGO's" fault and not the guy's for playing this game?

Gyrfalcon: buckler: KCAA president Christina Cox said O'Connell is allowed to eat homemade lunches during a paid break, or after kids go down for their nap, but the objective of lunch time is to provide a family-style setting where teachers and staff field questions about the food that's being served.

Huh?

Yeah, huh?

It is possible this is the dumbest school policy I have ever heard in my entire life, and that's saying quite a lot.

How do policies like this even get made? Do they come from outer space or something?

2013-05-17 12:24:47 PM
so, let me get this straight. a teacher, on a regular basis, pulls out magic sandwitchs and tells the kids in the class  "this cured me". and when she gets fired, it's " they fired me for eating lunch". no they fired you for telling kids you have magic sandwitches.i  bet the principle was setting in his office saying " how the hell did we hire this lunatic". and he said to her,  many times "STOP BRINGING MAGIC SANDWITCH's TO LUNCH"!! and then she did it again. she didn't get fired for eating lunch, she got fired for bring magic sandwich to school. i  say to the principle  good for you. get rid of poeple like her. or next you'll have them telling kids that jesus rode a velocorapator.

2013-05-17 12:28:23 PM
My reading of this story is that this whole issue is not about the food or the breaks. It's about "authotritah", as in "respect my authoritah!!". A bunch of pussy-assed administrators choose to exert what little power they have in their lives over a teacher's assistant because she won't follow their little pissant rules to their satisfaction.

The kids don't really give a sh*t what their teacher's assistant eats, and if they did this would be a perfect example to teach them about things like organic foods, food allergies, whether bringing lunch from home is better, all that. Instead the petty tyrants she's working for choose to wag their tiny little penii at her while spouting "rules are rules" babble.

Fark them. Assholes like this are why I never went into teaching, and why many teachers (and even assistants) burn out in their first five years. It's also why people b*tching about teachers pisses me off, because they have no idea what petty bullsh*t they go through like this every day.

2013-05-17 12:31:15 PM
the point of the lunch period is that teachers eat what the students are being served.

Teachers didn't eat with students in the schools I attended.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: I farking hated it when teachers would eat in front of us in class. We would be sitting there hungry and not allowed to so much as chew gum, and the teachers would sit there sipping on Diet Sprite and eating Chex Mix. Awesome.

Oh booooohooooo when I was a kid I had a teacher that would openly mock the students while eating cookies and sandwiches. "You want to eat some food? NO EATING ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM FOR STUDENTS HAHAHAHAHA OM NOM NOM NOM NOM!"

2013-05-17 01:58:44 PM

LesserEvil: I don't see the problem here. She can eat whatever she wants, but if it's not the school's food, she cannot eat it in front of the students.

Why is this so hard for people like her?

Nobody is discriminating against her for her food choice, and the only reason she is being "singled out" is because she is the only one breaking the rule, much like criminals are "singled out" for, you know, breaking the law.

Cripes, lady, go to the break room, eat your "organic raw vegan lunch" and STFU already.
Looks like she is required to work during her "break"  OSHA says you get 30 mins for lunch, so long as i am not drink beer or cocktails infront of the little snowflakes what i eat is my on business. If i am required to wok then it is not a "break"

The organic crowd is mildly annoying - pushing food for the world that is unsustainable at the Earth's current population numbers.

The Organic Vegan crowd is slightly more annoying, many wandering into PETA territory with their condescending attitudes about animal treatment.

Organic Vegan Raw morans are, well, morans. Some foods have to be cooked. These people are in the far extreme and usually militantly outspoken, blabbing to everybody, every minute of the day, about the "health benefits" of their food choices.

She falls into the last category. If she wants to be fired because of that choice, well, it is her choice to be fired.

I visit a lot of UK schools as part of my work and I've eaten a lot of school lunches. I have never been to a school where adults and children were served different food, though of course some adults and some children take in packed lunches.

What do you think unreasonable about a policy which says "We like mealtimes to be like those in a family, with adults and children sitting down, eating and chatting together"?

rewind2846: The kids don't really give a sh*t what their teacher's assistant eats, and if they did this would be a perfect example to teach them about things like organic foods, food allergies

Indeed. "Miss Jones thinks she has a food allergy. How do we know she has not? Yes, that's right, allergies have real and serious symptoms, not vague feelings of discontent. Miss Jones also thinks that organic food helps. We know that's nonsense, because organic food is chemically identical to normal food. Now, can anyone tell me why Miss Jones is eating food which doesn't help a condition she doesn't have? Right again. She's attention seeking and we all know that attention seeking is bad don't we. Apart from Miss Jones, of  course".

Lots of good teaching points to be made. Go for it.

In a warning letter issued to Lee O'Connell on Monday, KCAA's Kuapa campus director Wendy Nishimura wrote the following: "Staff who choose not to eat the meals provided, may eat their own food during their break or after the meal service for the children is completed."

KawaiiNot: Hawaii does not have any laws about requiring lunch or other breaks for their workers. Personally I think the school district are being jerks but that is within their rights.

New Headline: "24 year old shocked to learn that the world is not fair"

They kind of do.

Hawaii does not have any laws requiring an employer to provide a meal period or breaks to employees 16 years of age or older, thus the federal rule applies. The federal rule does not require an employer to provide either a meal (lunch) period or breaks. However, if an employer chooses to do so, breaks, usually of the type lasting less than 20 minutes, must be paid. Meal or lunch periods (usually 30 minutes or more) do not need to be paid, so long as the employee is free to do as they wish during the meal or lunch period.

From TFA:

Lee O'Connell counters that a 10-minute break isn't always conducive to eating lunch, and she prefers the half-hour set aside by the school, which begins at 11:20 a.m.

Not cut and dried here.

You're not allowed to discriminate against people with allergies. She has them so instead of forcing the school to only prepare things she can eat(as some people try to do), she's bringing her own.

I really don't see why this is such a big deal...

It boggles my mind how regimented schools have become to allow the little snow flakes to self actualize.
