That's why I drink Genny Cream Ale. It's $13.99/30 where I live. I'll be pissed when the hipsters discover it because I was drinking it before it was cool.

Drank high life in college at 12.50/30. About 2008 (still in school), all the trendy/Hipster types started drinking it and PBR and the price jumped to 15/30 in town.

I could still buy for 12.50 the next town over, so this isn't new at all.

I agree. I used to get a case of PBR bar bottles for $12.65 + deposit before the "cool" kids started liking it.

In all seriousness, I go to Walgreens and get their brand of beer. Yes. It's called Big Flatts. It's sold only at Walgreens. $3.10/6 cans. That's a price I can handle. And since I dont drink a ton, I like being able to get my buzz on for the same price as one beer at the bar.

Why would you ever drink cheap beer?  It tastes like crap.  :0

or people have been buying it cause there was a downturn in the economy and 2 bucks for a beer is a good deal

Pfft.

beardsandbooze.files.wordpress.com

Very sweet, but not bad considering the price. Little darker hue than any miller product ive compared it to at least, and its somehow hangover free. Theres also boxer ice which tastes a little better, is 5.5% instead of 5% and is the same price.

Back in the 70s my friend drank PBR because it was cheap and he always made sure I had a beer in my hand when I visited. I kinda got to liking it back then, and still have a soft spot for it. I've been drinking SNPA for the past 20 years, but for a canned domestic lager, PBR is not so bad. It may be better than Bud.

$4 for a can of Hamm's is not cool.

Huh, so PBR was popular with the working class and now it's popular among the yuppie hipster douches because they can condescend merely by holding it in their hands.
Hipsters really are scum.

$13.99 for 30 beers?

STFU. In western Canuckistan we pay over $55 for 30 of the same thing. Not that I buy PBR but I've never seen less than $50 for 30 of anything.

Grain alcohol would be cheaper and you could mix it with urine if you still wanted the authentic Big Flats flavor. As evidenced above, im a bit of a cheap beer connoisseur, walgreens beer is not good at all.

Even in downtown Boston.  It is my cheapo beer of choice for the last many years.  But it is building up steam unfortunately.  Luckily, most of the hipsters in Boston are going Champagne of Beers.

But in college, McDonald's used to run their "5 Big Macs for $5) promo often.  I could get 2 cases of Pfeifer's returnies and 5 Big Macs for $20, and my weekend was set.  Of course, by Sunday morning you were scraping the brown lettuce off the Big Mac's, but still... it was $20 for the whole weekend!

Quiet. It's not about screwing up these people's "own hip version of PBR", it's about artificial price gouging of what used to be a relatively inexpensive product due to the fact that it has become a status symbol of a rather annoying subculture full of condescending people. There is a good thing about these Hipsters though, it helped PBR survive as an American company that is not owned by a foreign corporation and the Craft Beer phenomenon is making liquor purchasing and drinking a more diverse hobby for the larger society; but still, many Hipsters are still condescending arseholes and deserve the "Hipster Hate"!

I'm sick of the hate on PBR. Especially by people who drink nothing but BMC beers. It is way less offensive than any of those and has long been my cheap beer of choice. I am a craft beer fan, hop head and home brewer, but given limited choice or when I want a simple adjunct lager, I'll usually reach for PBR. The fact that Tallboys are usually cheap at random dive bar in the city doesn't hurt. But I have noticed those occasions diminishing as of late as venues are catching on to it's popularity. Bah.

I guess I'm not hip or cool, because I only like to drink  good beer, and I drink it unironically.

It used to be that the only people who drank PBR were (1) down-and-out alkies, and (2) hipster douchebags. With the prices going up, I guess the broke alkies have moved on to Milwaukee's Best, Natty Ice, and similar shiat, leaving hipster douchebags as the sole remaining PBR demographic. Does that make it no longer ironic to drink it?

What if you can't tell what good beer is supposed to taste like?

You know, like all those people that think any American style lager tastes good.

Is it still ironic to drink bad beer if you think it is good?

And, then what if the "good beer" that you like isn't very good, either?

Yeah, it's actually not terrible. It's what my dad used to drink, which is pretty much the only reason I won't touch it anymore. (Makes me feel like I'm 16 again, sneaking a beer from the fridge.)

I'm still waiting for this to find its way down to Texas -- tastes like home to me:

Sadly they got bought by Miller.

...

...I read what you posted, but I choose to not mentally process that sentence. I prefer to think that jumble of letters says, "Bumblefark, you and your beer will soon be reunited."

That's what I choose, because that's what keeps the suicidal thoughts at bay.

i don't drink to get drunk. I drink to stop the voices in my head.

Homer, I think.

In the mid 90's we drank this swill in college...I've only ever seen it at one store in my whole life:  Sgt. Pepper's in Ann Arbor.  $5.99/30.

However, I recall the cans had ridges on them which is not the case in this photo.  We were fascinated by that.

Fluids are over.

I drink fluids, but only ironically.

Hagbardr: That's why I drink Genny Cream Ale. It's $13.99/30 where I live. I'll be pissed when the hipsters discover it because I was drinking it before it was cool.

I've been drinking it since it was 12. Way before anyone thought underage drinking was a "problem"

They have it at the Spec's on IH-35 and 1604.

Incidentally, I'll be there this afternoon, buying cheap beer and a couple cigars. And Bourbon. Maybe some wine for the wife.

Make sure you get something for the wife. Otherwise all you will have is wine.

I for one appreciate this generation of hipsters for the simple fact I know longer have to put any thought into what I will wear regardless of venue.

Looks good, but $6 a six?  Pure luxury.  Hammies are $12 the 30.

It looks like there was a barley bubble, which crashed in 2008, but has since recovered to twice its post-crash low. I don't think hipsters had anything to do with it.

Genny Cream
Genny 12-Horse
Genny Light

All integral to my childhood.

Wish they sold it down here. Not that it's great beer. But you know.

I drank bad beer before it was cool to be uncool doing so. Ya know before it was ironic.

That explains the Pabst's Green Ribbon and Pabst Gold Ribbon hitting upscale supermarket shelves in Williamsburg and Portland.

Where do you guys live that you can get 30 of anything for less than $15? Florida doesn't even have 30 packs and the average price of natty, busch or pbr is $12 for 18

God-is-a-Taco: Huh, so PBR was popular with the working class and now it's popular among the yuppie hipster douches because they can condescend merely by holding it in their hands.
Hipsters really are scum.

?  Project your own inferiority complex much there, buddy ?

/I drink PBR b/c it's simply the cheapest beer and does not taste like piss Bud-light.

poe_zlaw: It's hilarious how hipsters strike such a chord with so many Farkers.... And you all express how you hope they dont screw up your own hip version of PBR. How cute

It's funny because NO HIPSTER will ever admit to BEING a HIPSTER.

By that logic, the Farkers that deride hipsters are actually A LOT CLOSER to being a HIPSTER themselves.

Lets run the checklist:
1. Has a beer of choice that 'only they and their friends' know about.
2. Condescending attitude towards a sector of society they deem 'below them or not acting like them'.
3. A socially withdrawn view of things so they can mock it with 'irony'.
4. Wear a hoodie, T-shirt, and sneakers because they 'just don't care about social norms'.
5. Blog / post on digital media (hi, we're on Fark now, aren't we?)

i5.photobucket.com

Congrats Farkers... you are a HIPSTER as defined and viewed by people outside our little online ironic social group, called Fark.com.

You live in a state that meets its tax needs via a sales tax, and does not have a personal income tax, coupled with a relatively (VERY, compared to where I live) low property tax. This format puts a larger burden on tourists, but it also means that you pay more for things like booze.

You wanna see cheap liquor? Go to a "welfare" state that has a bunch of federal land, and gets federal monies to compensate (you cant tax federal land). Montana is a good example. Liquor prices there blow my mind. A $1 shot of cinnamon whisky was an all-the-time deal at two bars I hit up. You couldnt get a shot of barmat water for a buck where I live.

I'm getting a really weird urge to drive down to the border and get some Tecate from the factory.

/No idea how much less it is per 36-pack down there.

I still blame PBR for destroying that Cambodian temple complex.

I would expect that people are drinking cheaper beers because the economy is bad.
