Oh, fark NY cigarette taxes.  They created their own black market.

I hit NYC twice a year for business, and I can sell a pack for 8 dollars at a bar, or for 20 dollars if it's close to closing time.  It's ridiculous.  I'll carry a carton up for a week trip from VA, but I don't smoke that much.  The rest is usually just gifted to friends, but NYC got so stupid with the taxes that we can use individual smokes as barter for drinks.

I've been on the streets of NYC for quite some time, it used to be "can I bum a butt from you", now it's "can I buy a butt from you for a dollar".

/the scam is the same, just a different time.

// most people on the street that used to hit me up for butts don't even bother now days... knowing the price of the cigarettes.

Ayup. The only place that's going to work is somewhere relatively isolated like Alaska or Hawaii. Found myself paying more than $9 a pack when I was in Alaska. Next time I'll bring my own. And I'm still kicking myself for missing the airport shop in Tanzania where I could have gotten cartons of Camels for less than $20.

Heh. When I used to make regular trips to NY from VA I would "call ahead" and ask my friends if they had orders; I used to at least pay for round-trip gas with the profit, and that was with only a handful of cartons.

Vice tax is a failure of government and society, not a legitimate moral or economic factor in price.

Hence, the black market in this case is in the right.

Look, I am totally ok with taxing the living shiat out of smokers.

However, people need to realize the limitations of the law.  The law is powerful enough to stop some things, when what the law costs people is small compared to what people are willing to risk to get around it.  When cigarette taxes get too high, the difference between what cigarettes are worth, and what they are being sold for, is so high that some people are willing to break the law, and others are able to undercut prices and still make a good profit, and you get a black market.  At that point, you have to stop and realize that taxing the shiat out of cigarettes is not going to be any more productive.

But, right up to that point, go ahead and soak 'em.

True, our share of incidental solar radiation alone is more terawatts than we could possibly use, never mind our potential nuclear and coal and wind and natural gas and so forth. Hell, there's basically infinite geothermal energy under our feet, in theory.

But most of our cool stuff still runs on oil, and changing that is going to take decades if not the rest of the century, and if my aunt had testicles she'd be my uncle.

Its not addiction itself that's problematic, the problem is when you're addicted to something you can't get.  For instance, all of us need food, water, and oxygen on a regular basis, and thats not a problem as long as we have access to those things at a reasonable price (or free).

Similarly, caffeine (or whatever) addiction isn't necessarily harmful as long as you aren't addicted and then suddenly denied access to caffeine.  Granted, you won't die (as would happen if you were denied water), but I, for one, will certainly get a nasty headache for a day or two without my caffeine.

No.

Well, suppose you got a large starving family. Is it wrong to steal a truckload of bread to feed them?

Uh uh.

And, what if your family don't like bread? They like... cigarettes?

I guess that's okay.

Now, what if instead of giving them away, you sold them at a price that was practically giving them away. Would that be a crime, Bart?

Hell, no.

best way to buy cigs? casinos...  or, well, pretty much anywhere on reservation lands.  not subject to state taxes.  don't own a car, but have been told that gas stations on tribal land will put twenty bucks in your tank, and then tell you to come back in for your change, because the machines are programmed to collect state tax. also, if you're not paying state taxes, you pay about five bucks a pack instead of seven.

bars that sell smokes, want to make a profit.  if you walk a block and a half to the corner store and back, you save that mark-up...  similarly, if you run out in your pack, and you know you just want one, buying a five dollar drink for someone who gives you the one smoke you're craving at the bar means about fifteen bucks saved you can use at last call...

Caffeine will never be regulated like other drugs. Its a drug both liberals and conservatives (except for mormons and nobody cares about them) like. If for some reason people lost access to caffeine the economy would grind to a screeching halt. Clemkadidlefark: Well, hell with that. Let's get real all up in here ...

Every time we been doing this (for the past 60+ years)

[www.colourbox.com image 480x320]

We've been forced to assist in paying for this ...

[24.media.tumblr.com image 350x242]

Because of these rat bastids ...

Who chose to force Americans to buy gazilions of barrels of foreign oil ...

[gulfbusiness.motivate.netdna-cdn.com image 594x310]

When we have all the energy resources we needed.

So, catch the cigarette cartel and mete out some rough justice, but never forget you and I were forced to pay for the terrorism what killed 3,000 of us on 9/111.

And we paid for a whole more than that, by transferring our gas tank wealth to the people who hate us.

Except for the fact that the US buys slightly less than a third of its oil from the middle east.

As far as buying from people who hate us I have spent many happy nights with Saudi families and been welcomed into their homes, in full uniform, as a welcomed guest. Generalize much ? Now Canada yeah those guys hate us.

Tom_Slick: teenage mutant ninja rapist: it will be tobacco home grows

In most states it is legal to grow Tobacco for personal use.

/Planted it once to piss off and overzealous HOA who didn't like my Tomato plants.

Is this a thinly veiled reference to Tomacco?

Pete_T_Mann: StoPPeRmobile: I can't wait for the caffeine junkies to be up on the block. farking worthless scum. The sooner we realize the true threat the pose to civilized society, the better.

There already have been preliminary rumblings in that direction... and I will fully support any and all taxes and inconveniences on our over caffeinated citizens. Addiction of any sort is intolerable. As a matter of fact I think I'll go write a letter to Bloomberg about it right now...

Have you lost your farking mind?

cynicalminion: best way to buy cigs? casinos...  or, well, pretty much anywhere on reservation lands.  not subject to state taxes.  don't own a car, but have been told that gas stations on tribal land will put twenty bucks in your tank, and then tell you to come back in for your change, because the machines are programmed to collect state tax. also, if you're not paying state taxes, you pay about five bucks a pack instead of seven.

At 5 bucks you are still paying close to a buck in taxes. In SC smokes are between 5-6 bucks a pack depending on brand and that's with the recently increased tax on em.

Cigarettes are about $16 a p[ack in new York City.

If you set prices artificially high, you encourage a black market.

Sort of, when I decided to plant the tobacco to piss off the HOA that episode was my inspiration.

Caffeine will never be regulated like other drugs. Its a drug both liberals and conservatives (except for mormons and nobody cares about them) like. If for some reason people lost access to caffeine the economy would grind to a screeching halt. Millions of people with shiatty jobs who only barely make it through the day on the inertia from they get from a cup of coffee will just stop showing up.

to be fair here, one of the reason's caffeine and those five-hr energy things are all over the place is that caffeine's naturally produced...  i mean you can DE-caffeinate something, but in it's natural state, many things are a source of caffeine.  says so on the label, it's just NOT something that has an RDA...

ps... i try to limit my caffeine intake... despite the tasty coffee out there...

oh and i'm starting a petition for shepherd book to add "people who make diet-caffeine-free-mountain-dew" to his list of spots in that special hell...  FFS, what is the POINT?  you've taken all the fun bits out of a dew, and PAID FOR IT??

It's less defensible, since unlike smokers, people who drink caffeine don't helpfully indulge nearby people in their vice.

But I still wouldn't complain too much.

NOTHING that comes out of Ray Kelly's mouth should be believed. You don't get to be Chief of Police by being an honest man.

You know who also supports terrorism?  Halliburton repeatedly doing business with Iran.

The tobacco companies run most legal and illicit cigarette traffic.

Why are e-cigs banned in some places?

cynicalminion: Marcintosh: Lsherm: Oh, fark NY cigarette taxes.

So you get transferred from Cold Springs Correctional to Rikers TWICE a year?  No wonder taxes are so high.

um, have you EVER been to a bar?
bars that sell smokes, want to make a profit.  if you walk a block and a half to the corner store and back, you save that mark-up...  similarly, if you run out in your pack, and you know you just want one, buying a five dollar drink for someone who gives you the one smoke you're craving at the bar means about fifteen bucks saved you can use at last call...

you don't tip either do you . . . ?  If you're out drinking and you smoke cigarettes you will never have just one.  If you're out drinking and you can't afford a pack of cigarettes you are in real trouble because you won't leave anything for a tip.

A hint from an adult- do not run out of cigarettes at JFK- you can't afford them - 20 years ago they were $8 a pack there when they were $2.35 anywhere else.

Yeah I've been to a bar and I'd have told the manager to toss your sorry ass out because you're a cheap stiff and you're taking up one of my barstools.
I quit my last bar in the mid 1990's and I still miss them every now and again.

And then I wake up.

Lolwut? Who is trying to make guns more expensive?

Here's the deal.  If the terrorists can sell cigarettes cheaper than a legit business, then the government is doing something wrong, and it's not the consumers fault.
