Oh, fark NY cigarette taxes.  They created their own black market.

I hit NYC twice a year for business, and I can sell a pack for 8 dollars at a bar, or for 20 dollars if it's close to closing time.  It's ridiculous.  I'll carry a carton up for a week trip from VA, but I don't smoke that much.  The rest is usually just gifted to friends, but NYC got so stupid with the taxes that we can use individual smokes as barter for drinks.

In theory any organized crime operation could be used to fund terrorism.  In theory, increasing the length of our school buses should make our students smarter.  In theory.

I guess I can finally kill off smokers pre-emptively like I have always wanted to.

I've been on the streets of NYC for quite some time, it used to be "can I bum a butt from you", now it's "can I buy a butt from you for a dollar".

/the scam is the same, just a different time.

// most people on the street that used to hit me up for butts don't even bother now days... knowing the price of the cigarettes.

The Ramadan brothers bought cigarettes from Cooper Booth Wholesale Inc., a wholesaler in Virginia,

Don't you have to be able to show a legitimate business license to buy from a wholesaler? Anybody know if they had one for Virginia?

Ayup. The only place that's going to work is somewhere relatively isolated like Alaska or Hawaii. Found myself paying more than $9 a pack when I was in Alaska. Next time I'll bring my own. And I'm still kicking myself for missing the airport shop in Tanzania where I could have gotten cartons of Camels for less than $20.

As an ex smoker I have no problem with these taxes if you can't pay for the smokes you shouldn't be having them.

Big surprise, high taxes = black market. You could eliminate this source of terrorist funds by dropping the taxes back to levels where smuggling doesn't pay. But no, keep them high and then complain when bad guys act like bad guys and happily flout the law for their own gain.

Heh. When I used to make regular trips to NY from VA I would "call ahead" and ask my friends if they had orders; I used to at least pay for round-trip gas with the profit, and that was with only a handful of cartons.

Vice tax is a failure of government and society, not a legitimate moral or economic factor in price.

Hence, the black market in this case is in the right.

Well, hell with that. Let's get real all up in here ...

Every time we been doing this (for the past 60+ years)

www.colourbox.com

We've been forced to assist in paying for this ...

24.media.tumblr.com

Because of these rat bastids ...

bestdelegate.com

Who chose to force Americans to buy gazilions of barrels of foreign oil ...

gulfbusiness.motivate.netdna-cdn.com

When we have all the energy resources we needed.

So, catch the cigarette cartel and mete out some rough justice, but never forget you and I were forced to pay for the terrorism what killed 3,000 of us on 9/111.

And we paid for a whole more than that, by transferring our gas tank wealth to the people who hate us.

For multiple cartons maybe, but for single packs, you would be losing money after paying for the train, not to mention the time involved.

Puritanical attitudes creating a black market for a product deemed immoral and therefore banned and heavily taxed by a bunch of sanctimonious jackasses? Who would have guessed?

When you are hurting on cash there are a lot of things reasonable to do to cut costs, going to New Jersey is never among them... or Staten Island.

2013-05-17 12:54:45 AM
I still don't have a problem with the high tax. Hustlers gonna hustle, and the high tax + ecigs + her doctor finally putting the fear of god in her was what got my mother to quit after 40+ years.

And frankly, it was mostly the money. $300 a month for cancer sticks looks pretty harsh when you're about to retire.
