Their servers need to band together and sue.

Oh, I'm sure they'll be on their best behavior.  But somehow I doubt their best behavior will be good enough, or that they will keep up the facade for long.

At this rate they'll get a contract for a reality TV show of their own, which will be popular because people love trainwrecks and they'll get enough money to pay off all their bills.  The aristocrats.

I'd put the odds of this at "very high."  I have no doubt the various production machines in Hollywood are already trying to get a hold of them - in fact, it may be one of the reasons they hired a PR firm.

Why will people spend money on things that they know are terrible?

I'm genuinely curious. How it should work is that these pieces of shiat go out of business and everyone just goes somewhere else to have lunch. But what actually happens is people line up to have someone from the TV box shout at them!

Good Christ, I wish I could have shame and embarrassment surgically removed so I could get rich too.

I sincerely hope these excuses for people don't actually become successful as a result of their awful personalities. The deserve nothing less than national ridicule but not a single penny in income. I'd like to think we as a people know enough to laugh with our words and not our wallets.

But we as a people also made Snooki famous.

The owners will likely be holding a press conference before the Grand Re-Opening to answer falsehoods about their business depicted on a reality television show, including assertions that the restaurant confiscates tips from servers.

They admitted on Kitchen Nightmares that they keep the waiters' tips. Are they trying to backpedal or are they going with the, "They made us say that for the show!" angle?

Katy Cipriano answered a massive amount of questions there. I think moderators on Reddit got some complaints about slander or something, though I'm sure someone here has better details about what went down with that.

That's some damned fine reporting.

Introduce the interview segment by saying you have someone who "would NOT want to set foot in the restaurant again!", then wrap up the interview with her saying that she'd like to get a reservation there.

I've seen the show before, and I don't quite understand why suddenly it's amazing news that something on Kitchen Nightmares wasn't all hunky-dory.
It's an okay show, with parts staged (although not as staged this time from what I hear) with Ramsey being a host without an actual connection to the renovations and such.

Do people feel lost without mass shootings or bombings in their week?

Waitress who got fired is young, had two jobs at that time, but knows how to do stuff.
Samy is the only one allowed to use the 'point of sale' machine and he sometimes forgets to enter parts of orders.
Amy the "I am so perfect always" was already farking up which order went to what table and Waitress lightly called her on it as "are you sure?".
Shop is closed when the owners will not allow it to be open when both of them are not there.
The only nice thing about the place is the cleanliness and of course the repackaged backed goods in the glass display cabinet.

First, the husband owner stated that they paid them a salary, but also admitted taking 100% of the tips.

Second, when I leave a tip it is intended for the wait staff.  Under no circumstances would I ever leave a tip if I know the owners were going to take 100% of it.  When the owners take tips left for their employees they are stealing their employee's money, as much as any random person would be if they swiped the tips left for the wait staff off from the table before they were collected.

Restaurant/bar owners (thieves in this case, and many, many others) have been doing this for decades. "We pay you $X per hour, which is way more than anyone else would pay you elsewhere. We're being unbelievably generous in doing that for YOU! Now, we're gonna pool all of the tips we took from the tables/credit cards, and divide that equally amongst all servers, and then tip the bussers, bar-backs and line cooks appropriately. You'll still make out like a bandit!"

Then, after you go for drinks or have a smoke session with your co-workers, you find that between 50-80% of the tip amounts received vanish....even after the tip-outs were doled out to your co-workers.

RoboZombie: Does anyone know how your restaurant gets on that show? Why would any restaurant owner WILLINGLY go on a show called "Kitchen Nightmares"?? How do they think it will help them?

They honestly believed that their food is amazingly good and that the only reason they get bad reviews is because of "haters".  They ignored the fact that every other restaurant on KN was a disaster at some level and genuinely thought Gordon was going to come in and agree with them that their food is perfect, thus restoring their pristine reputation and shutting down all the "haters".  Needless to say, they didn't get quite the result they were hoping for.

If you watch the episode, toward the beginning, when they show Gordon around, you can see that they are absolutely confident in everything and that the only problem they see is the "haters" and "bullies".  It's only after Gordon starts to eat Amy's cooking and talk to the staff that things start to unravel.

Well the ones that are usually on there are on a last ditch effort, "please save me", level of desperation. Most don't survive even after being visited.

These dumbasses called Ramsay because they wanted reassurance that they were doing everything right, and all those yelp wannabe food critics were wrong about everything. Turns out they're horrible people with a horrible restaurant, and Ramsay told them that. Then he walked out because they refused to be helped.

This restaurant isn't strapped for cash, and I think it's because the husband is a sugar daddy who's feeding thousands of dollars into a restaurant his "trophy" wife wanted to own. He keeps the doors open, and she keeps her legs open.

I have to admit that I'm enjoying every last drop of watching Princess PMS getting PWNED on a global scale.

The only thing that worries me is that Hollywood, in their utter seething contempt at all Americans,  might give these two a reality show so they can act snotty at humanity for years.

Case in Point: "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Child". I would like to know who on this planet outside of a network executive's own ass wanted this show to be made!

Radak: RoboZombie: Does anyone know how your restaurant gets on that show?

OK, I just saw a clip I guess from AFTER Gordon ate her food and saw them stealing tips from the staff.
I will say, I have only seen a handful of these shows and typically, the kitchens lok like toxic waste dumps. THIS place actually looked clean and organized, but everything else was a horror show

It was extremely clean (and the waitress who did the Reddit AMA said it was always that clean, not just for the show).  Gordon was very impressed with how clean the whole place was, including the walk-in, where everything was sorted and labeled properly.  However, this (and good storebought desserts) turned out be the only good things they had going for them.

Even if they do, it will be the fleeting, flash-in-the-pan fame that reality stars like themselves get. Even at the best-case scenario for them, reality show and all, they'll be forgotten and probably also out of business by the end of the decade.

My CSB was one visit I made about a decade ago to the DDLR in San Diego during Comic-Con 01. Lots of people from all over the world in the joint, including two somewhat well-dressed 40-something asian guys.

Along comes the waiter with two straws stuck into his upper lip, walks up behind them with squinty eyes and grabs them both in a bear hug and starts yelling "WASABEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" most of the room turned their heads away in a "I really don't want to be witnessing this" feel, while some were openly pissed enough to almost consider getting up from their tables to bust the waiter's face open.

There's DDLR non-PC, and then there's KKK cross-burning non-PC.

For the rest of the night, the waiter was going around to each table and profusely apologizing to every diner, probably because the boss made him do that before he fired the bigot after his shift was done that night.

Counterpoint: Sarah Palin's Alaska. A reality show starring the then-second-most-popular politician in America.

Originally scheduled for 12 episodes, cancelled after just 7. Episode one got millions of viewers, most of whom were rubberneckers who would not go on to watch episode two.

I imagine that if Princess Pizza gets a reality show, it wouldn't last long enough to get cancelled after episode 7.

That loony toon can't even bake one pizza at a time.  Seriously: she cooks orders one at a time, as they come in, in the order they come in.

Let that sink in for a second, and then see if it jives with any kitchen experience you might have.

The commercial kitchens I've been in were a barely-controlled chaos during rush. This wacko lady could get into the weeds if a couple four-tops happened to come in at the same time.  I mean, she has three goddam pizza ovens, and can't make more than one at a time?!

I live about 10 blocks from that place. Within walking distance of Amy's there are about a dozen fantastic places to get good food. Just watched the episode after reading all the comments over the last day or so.

It was all the hype had said and more. When you have Gordon Ramsey, a chef with twelve Michelin stars, being filmed for a show watched by millions, and you still make him wait an hour for a pizza, then you have problems. That the pizza is still undercooked after all that time is just icing on the cake.  If this is them on their best behaviour because of the cameras....

I think the couple enable each other and back each other's fantasy opinion up. I assume he does it so he carries on getting laid and she does it so he carries on funding her dream restaurant.

ginkor: This is fair warning.  After two years of living in Arizona, some people behave like Amy Bouzaglo (Scottsdale) and Jodi Arias (Mesa).  Or that crazy vampire girl who tried to kill the guy in Tempe.

Some say it is because Indian brujos lived there a thousand years ago and imbued the rocks with batshiat crazy.  That's probably it.

DING DING DING, I think we have a winner folks!

Flint Ironstag: Just watched the episode after reading all the comments over the last day or so.

Watch him again. He does it because he's afraid she'll cut his dick off and feed it to her cats while he's watching.

If you want good pizza I'd suggest Rosati's or Oregano's, both are just across the street. Those two idiots must have money, it is the only way I can see why they're still in business.

Did this place have a bad reputation before KN? As in, everyone kinda knew someone who knows someone that had a bad experience? Just curious.

You're not missing much at Mystic. They're OK, but the coast between New York and Boston is rife with Italians (especially Neapolitans), Portuguese, and Greeks, so there is no shortage of good pizza. Hell, drive about 45 minutes to New Haven and you can eat in three of the best pizza restaurants on the east coast (Sally's, Pepe's, and Modern).

nothing. 'hot' is describing its popularity surge. Additionally, (i don't have the data to support this) only Vegas has more mid-high price point restaurants in as small of an area as Scottsdale

It isn't normal for someone to lay down $1 million for a restaurant, and then continue to sink money into one that doesn't appear to succeed.
That's why people create their own theories.

On the FB "I Support ABC" page a poster linked the AZ code prohibiting employers from taking tips from their employees. Then, Not Amy started a "Tips aren't in the Constitution!" page, and deluge of posts to that affect. There was one US episode and one BBC episode that he loved the food, but the service and marketing were terrible.  I watched both a few years ago, and at the time they were doing well.  I think it was a Carribian style place in the BBC show.  The Fox version with good food was somewhere near the great lakes, but I forget where.

To be honest, most restaurants that are on their last leg do serve crap.  They pretty much only take places that are on the verge of bankruptcy as I understand it, and places with great food typically aren't a few hundred thousand in the negative asking a reality show for help.  There are reasons that most of the places that are featured have similar sets of problems.

The owners can't tell they're serving crap, and/or they run a dirty place and/or have terrible employees.  Sometimes all of the above.

Oh, this will end well...

As a former Maricopa resident, folks LOVE their crazies out there. The problem is, that while they love them, I'm fair certain that being a crazy white lady, she's already attracted the attention of the Sheriff's Department, and I suspect that Joe is going to want his pound of flesh to get her an endorsement and some extra protection--and publicity. Especially the publicity. And I'm not sure that space-time can curve enough with two egos that large in the same vicinity. Something is going to snap, and when it does, it will be epic in scale...

The server, when asked if they were made in house, mumbled "I don't know..." She looked scared to me. As a server, I'd see the pastry chef cleaning up after the morning's baking when I came in to start lunch. Plus, one ticket at a time? An hour for an undercooked pizza? Fully loaded pastry display? Duplicitous, evil owners? I don't buy it. The honest owners I know would say "fine desserts fresh from Local Bakery X" with zero repercussions.

No!  You're missing the glory of this moment.  Cat lady does ALL the cooking.  Solo.  And she can't keep up when there are only 4 tables full in her joint.

Imagine the level and quality of psycho drama that will be in that kitchen with a full house!  Customers waiting 2 hours for a salad.  Cat lady getting farther and farther in the weeds.  Cutting corners (more).  Food getting worse and worse as the evening goes on...

Based on the size of their kitchen, selection of deserts, number of staff, and Amy's skill at anything else culinary, I'm going to say that's largely outside the realm of probability.

Preston Preston: TV's Vinnie: SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- It's the hottest restaurant in Scottsdale, and for the second day in a row, no one can get a table at Amy's Baking Company.

Hot, which is the exact opposite of typical Amy cuisine.

I'm sorry, but I'd pay for a crappy meal just to watch that live.  I would.

You know, if this PR firm has half a brain (which is debatable since they decided to take on ABC as a client), they'll do the smart thing and hire a team of skilled line chefs and keep Amy's crazy ass out of the kitchen.  It will be interesting to see just how short of a leash they can manage to keep Samy and Amy on.

sheep snorter: Oh I forgot that the restaurant is violating Arizona law by the owners stealing the wait staffs tips.

/tips are for wait staff only and can not be taken by management or owners no matter what the wages.

Violating US Department of Labor Laws (as well, i suppose).  I think that's a bigger deal.

icam: The owners will likely be holding a press conference before the Grand Re-Opening to answer falsehoods about their business depicted on a reality television show, including assertions that the restaurant confiscates tips from servers.

They admitted on Kitchen Nightmares that they keep the waiters' tips. Are they trying to backpedal or are they going with the, "They made us say that for the show!" angle?

Someone hacked the show

2013-05-16 11:36:07 PM
While stealing tips is horrible, another episode featured a father who had his seven adult children working in his place seven days a week, without ANY pay!  The got to live in his house for free, though..

Never gonna happen. At the beginning of the episode, Samy said that he has never found anyone that he thinks is reliable, which I think is BS because everyone can see that the real reason no chefs are hired is because Amy forbids it.

As far as she's concerned, this joint is nothing but her personal big-girl version of an EZ-Bake Oven, and while she's playing Super-Chef, anyone who doesn't love her food is a hater who's in rebellion against God.

Have you stopped to consider the possibility that they're actually made in house?

All most every photo of the cakes and pastries posted on their FB page have been tracked down to other sources, even though Amy claims they are her work.

She even posted several Easter-themed flower arrangements created by a well-known artist, and insisted they were cakes she had made -- not flowers. (They were flowers).

they were on their best behavior for gordon ramsay! they thought he was going to set the record straight and tell everyone that her food was amazing!

After watching Kitchen Nightmare for a long time and I will say this, Gordon Ramsay will always say your food taste like craps. PERIOD! Not sure why people dont get it in their farked up head.

He said the dessert was good. Of course, the real pastry chef remains unknown.

This is the part that still makes me wonder. All the /b/ and facebook and twitter and folks that have looked over this trainwreck, and not one has figured out who makes the pastries that Gordon actually said were good? That's possibly the most important part of this whole thing! How has noone tracked this down yet?

There is positively 0% chance those are made in-house. It is flat-out unpossible.

Watch the videos. They ADMIT the pastries are 'ressled', i.e. repackaged and resold as their own, a practice that sounds downright fraudulent to me.

But, my point was, Ramsay did like them, that makes it worthwhile tracking down the actual people that made them.

davidphogan: BarkingUnicorn: I've watched several episodes of Kitchen Nightmares over the past few days and they're all pretty formulaic:

Owners are always crazy assholes.
Kitchen staff may be good guys or bad  guys.
Servers are always good people.

Some episodes break the mold where the owners are great, but the cooks and waitstaff suck but the owners are too nice to fire anyone.

They probably save those places for shows like "Restaurant Stakeout".

I was going to ask Not Amy who to write the check to for the cyber-bullying charity started by 9/11 survivors.  She's twisted herself into pretzels to not name the charity so I figured I'd ask if it would be easier to write it out to her and her  eunuch husband. Damn, Simpsons Barbie blocked me from posting on her page, and all I did was (as nicely as I could) suggest she come here and defend herself.  I guess she sensed a trap - scared of fark.

Anyone seen the 80s movie "Big Business"?  She's the upper crust twin to white trash Jennifer Petkov.  And she just cannot keep her Mr Limpet-looking mouth shut.  I am loving seeing this insane biatch being poked by a stick, and her continual gnashing at that stick.

Since I am blocked, and my passive-aggressive tactic has been stymied, please, poke her for me.  Go to the "I support Amy's Baking Company Bakery Boutique & Bistro 100 percent" FB page.  I want to see this biatch implode.

Yeah, I have a life, but I have worked my ass off as a server for many hours of my life and this foray of watching their meltdown amuses me and is little sweat off my back.  I want to see her and her loudmouthed puss husband go down on behalf of those employees they abused.

2013-05-17 12:08:53 AM
What they need to do is hire a manager, a cook and some wait staff and stand back and not touch anything!  They are getting a ton of exposure and will be getting lots of foot traffic from this, if they can keep their farked up craziness out of ABC they have a real shot at making money from this.

That was bitter and nasty. As a chef, I have to say, I like it. FOH and Back of House have to stick together, especially against crazy ass owners. Too damn many out there. I did my stint in Phoenix, in the Biltmore area, as well as in Peoria, before I hooked up with Glendale Arena and the Coyotes. This is an area that is rife with scumbags who absolutely are miserable SOBs to work for, and the labor laws in AZ are a joke. Don't get me wrong, Mass has more than a few asshats, but Maricopa has a special breed who are used to folks falling over themselves to be doormats, and with labor as cheap as it is, because so many folks employ illegal labor, there is always a ready supply of idiots to keep rolling through the door to take up a spot on the floor or behind the line...

In regards to the pastries, the entirety of the kitchen wasn't shown, but there certainly didn't look to be anywhere near the amount of kitchen baking equipment to turn out that display of baked goods -- on top of being a regular restraunt kitchen.

Part of their many problems is that the refuse to hire anyone but wait staff. That was made abundantly clear in the first 6 minutes of the episode.

RoboZombie: Does anyone know how your restaurant gets on that show? Why would any restaurant owner WILLINGLY go on a show called "Kitchen Nightmares"?? How do they think it will help them?

In this case the restaurant owners requested that Gordon Ramsay would feature them on his show. They, especially crazy-ass Amy, thought that Gordon would take one look at their business and fully validate what they were doing and would basically quash any further negative reviews from sites like Yelp. They're that delusional.

Restaurants commonly buy desserts from dedicated bakery kitchens.  Most of the time, the restaurant has business cards of the bakeries on display as well.  But sometimes, in the dark reaches of the gnome wilderness, you will find a restaurant that refuses to admit they bought the desserts and resell them.  Or they will admit it, then deny it, then admit it again, then deny it again.  Or they might have been hacked.  It's always hard to tell with gnomes.

The original "ressling" (reselling) quote came from the real (sorry, "hacked") Facebook meltdown, not from Twitter.  There have been fake Twitter posts parodying the original meltdown post.

In that fairly small kitchen, with no appropriate baking equipment in sight, and Amy clearly lacking any real cooking skills, the possibility that she's turning out those baked goods from that kitchen is absolutely zero.

dunno whether it was law or not, but the few places i've worked, tips were collected, and before anyone got sent home, the wait staff member with no tables started counting money, and figuring out what went to the dishwasher and backwaiter, then started using advanced calculus to figure out how much each of them got based on hours.  also, one was a local place that did shift changes in the tip jar...  someone who came in at 8pm didn't get tipped by the table that left at 7...

tl;dr

to sum up: don't leave without your tips, these folks are shadier than the pacific northwest, (if they want a new one, gordon ramsay will chew it), and from a consumer standpoint?  if you've seen it on NATIONAL television, skip it.  if you're traveling, find a copy of the local free paper, and get your dining guide from them.

Fireproof: davidphogan: You realize they're a chain, right?

Uh, they are? They definitely didn't look like a chain in the episode.

I was responding to a post about Dicks Last Resort.

There's some confusion here.  The "chain" comment from davidphogan was in reference to Dick's Last Resort, which is a chain of restaurants where patrons are deliberately treated poorly, and furthermore davidphogan's comment which you quoted was due to a misinterpretation of the obtusely constructed sentence of Corvus, which was already acknowledging that DLR as a chain.

Thank you, this is all quite confusing.

Bruxellensis: It might be a while, but I'm sure things will really come to a head when the police figure out they filed a false report about being "hacked."

Sooner or later, one way or another, these crazy farks will go down.

I believe the chances of them being hacked are near zero. Just as soon Facebook delivers the server logs to the cops they'll have another issue to deal with. I do hope the cops press charges for filing a false report.

I seriously doubt they went to the police.  They just can say that so some people will go 'seems plausible'.  The same way when the torch the restaurant they will go it was some hater on the internet.

namegoeshere: namegoeshere: YouSirAreAMaroon: He said the dessert was good.

Have you stopped to consider the possibility that they're actually made in house?

1) She admitted that they're not. Ressling.

2) She doesn't have the kitchen equipment to be able to make them.

3) She can't even bake a farking pizza.

4) She can only handle making pizzas one at a time. Even one at a time they're not cooked correctly. That is an incredible amount of complex baked goods. There is no way on earth, even if she never, ever slept, that she could be producing that.

She can't even make a hamburger. When Gordon bit into the burger she made and all of that oily, water or whatever ran out of it, I wanted to throw up just watching it. I don't know how he didn't.

Some Phoenix news agency said that they checked and a report was filed with the local department. The FBI did not respond to the inquiry.

namegoeshere: stewbert: I'm sad that this thread is running out of steam.

I am confident that there will be ongoing follow ups. We have definitely not juiced all the lulz out of this situation yet.

Their up-coming press conference should be interesting. I just watched KN for the second time. Just as funny as the first. I get some kind of a perverse pleasure watching people melt down like that.

/I'm broken that way.

Maybe this can help:   Dept. of Labor: Amy's Baking Company may be in violation of law.

You guys have made my day, thanks!
