I blame his parents.  Naming your kid Dick Trickle is a sure fire way to ensure death by way of suicide.

post0089: Hard to be objective, I guess.

okay, i'll  give you that.  i bet it's a rare person who has not known a family/friend who has committed suicide.

but it's easy to not be so judgemental...especially when dealing with other folks' pain.

bikerific: I grew up near State Park Speedway in central Wisconsin and my family followed racing during Trickle's short track heyday.   Here's my favorite recollection from sometime in the 80s.

One week, Trickle had car problems- I don't remember why.  But he got another guy to let him use his car for the night.  I don't remember the guy's name, but the car was a Blue #31.  It was a perennial last place car.  I mean dead last, way out of contention last, always lapped last.

Trickle borrows that car, which he had never driven, and which was always dead last, and won everything with it.

Ah, State Park Speed Way.  Saw REO there back in the mid to late 70's.

Anyway, he also owned a resort in Rib Lake, WI (Camp 28) and I heard he would always make time for those that wanted to see him (if he was there).  Not sure if he still owns/owned it though.

I met him when he drove the 90 Heilig-Meyers car.  Before the Richmond spring race in the HM VIP suite.  He was friendly and showed no hubris at all.  Had on a "show" Nomex suit with sponsor patches all over it, with a piece of duct tape over one on  his left chest.  I asked him what that was about and he said, "I ain't got a check from this this quarter".

Sorry he found it necessary to check himself out, but I understand.

I was thinking an unrestricted overengined NASCAR race car with winglets and a ramp and a press conference to have the press watch him try to jump the Grand Canyon would have been much sweeter.
