Pretty much sums it up for me

"Political correctness" = "WAAAAHHHH! I can't act like an asshole like my father did and his father before him because now I have to be accountable for what I say!!"

Why do you get that sort of bullsh*t from white males, and  no one else?

Came for the "taking back porch monkey" reference.

Leaving very unhappy.

Gyrfalcon: Oh, yes. I had a professor in law school, quite an outstanding Constitutional law scholar, who was offended when anyone used the term "you guys" in casual speech...because women weren't "guys." We had another professor who was so animal rights that he would literally order people out of his classroom if they were eating any sort of meat product in his class.

I never had the latter professor; for the former, I did of course use "you guys" and the masculine gender for neutral pronoun as often as I possibly could. Because I'm just mean that way. If I'd had the other, I'd have had to eat a pastrami sandwich in every class, and that would have been hard on my ulcer.

Heh :)

I think my snapping point in grad school was having a 45 page term paper rejected because, in one instance, I used the term "mankind." I was told I would be allowed to resubmit it if I substituted the phrase, "human kind," per APA guidelines on non-sexist language.

Instead, I submitted a 5-page, intentionally belabored/semi-satirical etymology of "human", which closed on the punchline that "human kind" has the (pleonastic) literal meaning of, "the kind belonging to man" (i.e., "mankind")...and therefore violated APA guidelines.

Oddly enough, the professor didn't find that witty or charming.

/Also, I was kind of a dick student that way.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: robbiex0r: "clinically" ?

Yes. Much like little kids say Hell and then excuse themselves by saying that they were merely referring to the literal place of damnation and not swearing.

One does get the impression that he thinks that it's totally unfair that he doesn't get to use the world whenever he likes.

I was unaware anyone [in the profession] had attached a medical label to the term.

Doc Daneeka: Some 'Splainin' To Do:Nine times out of ten, when I hear someone claiming that they can't say something for fear of political correctness, it's because they are  actually trying to say something that is, in fact, horrifically bigoted and feeling put upon because of it.

This. "Political correctness" just basically means "don't be a horrible asshole to other people."

So whenever I hear people biatching about "political correctness," what I actually hear is a person loudly demanding their right to be a horrible asshole.

Here's a handy Venn Diagram of "people who biatch about liberal PC nonsense" and "people who throw a raging hissyfit if you call a member of the Tea Party a Teabagger"

Maybe she really is a navaho?

Old enough to know better: Anyone else miss the days when bigots at least had the courtesy to keep their shiat to themselves and their small group of like-minded friends, instead of broadcasting it all over like it was something to be proud of?

What next? They start wearing their white robes when they go shopping?

/ but he has a mustache, he can't say that!

No, he's white. That's why he can't say that, and why I can't say it.

Is it not understandable that a denigrating slur might be different when it's coming from someone in the group that has historically oppressed the other group, instead of from one of the oppressed group?

I'm not giving a pass to ghetto culture by any stretch. I think that culture is one of the major things holding large swaths black people back in this country in conjunction with (while sometimes enhancing/"justifying") institutional racism. But I don't begrudge anyone being offended when a white person uses n*gger and not when a black person does, due to the history of the term.

RACIST!!!
