LOL, I did get quite close to get that picture. I wasn't worried about getting stung as bumblebees are not very aggressive, unless you are a wasp. This one was hovering there for several minutes and only moved away to chase off a wasp that was flying by. Bumblebees are my third favorite insect behind Hummingbird Moths and Praying Mantises.

Wait, you're telling me that bumblebees are not aggressive *and* they go after wasps?
I'm beginning to appreciate bumblebees.

Wasps are the assholes of the insect world. That's all I have to say about that.

Found out one of my mgrs. at work can't do this with his tongue.....so I do it to him all the time! Pisses him off that I can do something he CAN'T!!! Hahaha!!!!!!

I wonder what the % is of people who can do that.

//For the record, I can. I can wiggle my ears too.

Can't curl my tongue...but I can wiggle my ears!

You know, I've probably seen it before in the ago, but can you please tell me the history behind your user name? You can EIP if you prefer......just curious. :D

Nothing earth-shattering...silly, really.
I like the word 'syzygy' (means when all the planets are lined up on the same plane).  Figured it was a good, gender-neutral* handle...then I thought it needed something else.
Hit the 'freewheeling association' button in the brain.  "Syzygy...szygy...gy....gee whizz...Syzygy whizz"
OK, that'll work.

Told you it was silly...

*I've discovered that one tends to catch less crap on the Intarwebz when one doesn't 'present' with a female identity.  Sorta like the 'Initials only' thing back when we used phone books.

It's usually a sign of anger in my clan...if the nostrils dilate, there's a baad moon risin'.

lilyspad: sherpa18: personally, i like my rum straight (well, mixed with diet coke... )
To be honest, and this is just me, but I don't understand how people can drink diet pop. It tastes nasty (to me) and is not nearly as healthy for you as real sugar. Not that a lot of added sugars are GOOD for you, but natural sugars are better for your body than man-made. I am NOT trying to get on a soap-box...don't send me hate mail. I'll just shut the f**k up now. Carry on.... :D

Truth be told, it was not by choice, I had always hated diet soda but after a blood test many years ago where my triglycerides were totally farked, it was that or nothing. Like anything else, you can get used to it if you HAVE to. Now I can't stand regular soda, IMHO, it is WAY too sweet. Then again, since it is just a vehicle to help deliver the sweet deliciousness of alcohol into your bloodstream, you sorta get over it. Very quickly. At least I did   :o)

Agarista: This is my breakfast cat.
She comes in mornings, stays for some love, then gets thrown out when I go to work.

I call her "Kahvalti" which means "breakfast"

Sounds like something my old Alpha Cat Misha used to do.  He had an 'arrangement' with the elderly gentleman who lived next door to our basement apartment.
Saw this happen once- Misha would show up about mid-morning and announce himself.  The door was opened- "Well hello, Blackie!"  and Misha would go share a cup of coffee, a snack and a gossip...which probably included scritches and purrs...with him.

Think it's time to boogie...Mordor awaits, and it sounds as though Wimsey just repelled a boarder from the open window.  Thought it was a spat between him and D'Artagnan (sadly regular, I'm afraid), but D'Artagnan is in here with me.

the abandoned animal concept has been weighing very heavily on me,
I am being forced to move soon.
and most will remember a 7th cat has declared my house as his.
but I CAN NOT take him with me. can. not.
I have made sure he has a rabies shot, and thanks to my sainted vet
George is no longer a "Tom", but I must find a safe place for him in 2 weeks
or less.
the panic level is high
he isn't "presentable" for adoption fairs due to the fighting scabs on his face
and the shelters are all swamped with kittens
I don't know what I'm going to do with him.
he's a sweet, attention whore with people, he apparently doesn't like
some other animal in the area and has taken a beating.
any ideas??

Fred is home.. had a UTI... and told me about it.. all fixed up now, on a new food regiment..picked him up from the vet yesterday evening.. they brought him out in the carrier and all you could see was his butt.. put the carrier in the car, said his name and he turned around and the motor started... first action after being released at home from the carrier was to flop on his back for a belly rub.... after which he demonstrated that he could now pee.... hopefully the new food will prevent a reoccurance."

I had a cat that blocked up too. one that the helps quite a bit is I mix a bit of water in with their wet food. it helps them stay hydrated and dilute the urine.

if youre cat is on SO food i HIGHLY recommend the Royal Canin reduced calorie since the regular stuff can pack on the pounds

Holy crap! They're eating into your deck? Get some Raid and nuke them from orbit!
Worst problem I've had with bumblebees was when they took over an old gopher hole in the front yard. Ran over it with the mower and found my self surrounded by them, I ran, they went back in the hole and I plugged it up with dirt (and salt and Holy water and cement and nails etc...). I can handle snakes and reptiles but bees and wasps are Satan in my book. If they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone, otherwise it's kill 'em with fire.

Well, carpenter bees in my case (rather than bumblebees), but yep, they're eating my deck.  I've killed 3 or 4 of them already.  I'm waiting for a call back from an exterminator, though the late frost we had a couple of weeks ago seems to have thinned them out substantially.  Next step will probably be replacing some boards and restaining it.

tigerose: lol! It is fit that they are attracted to musical instruments! I think that the Harper Hall series is one of her best. The most recent ones, penned by her son..not so much. Too much time travel, and confusing without a durn chart!

The Harper Hall series was some of the better ones, but I've liked all of hers so far; I started Masterharper of Pern but haven't had the chance to pick it back up lately. I'm reading in published-order, and so far I haven't dis-like any of them.

KimJ: I haven't read any of the recent ones. I stopped reading McCaffrey when she started making everything romance-centric. Pern, Acorna, Rowan/Damia. I don't know what's the point of creating fantastic universes if you're still going to center everything about main characters finding their "soul mates". (And those relationships are almost always heterosexual, as if no one else can hope for a "perfect" match...)

When is that? I don't recall reading any romance-focused books, but I'm not done with all of them yet. And IIRC, not all of the "romances" are hetero. Heck, one of the ones I recently finished (forgot which one!) had a major plot line with two male riders in a relationship, and several M/M and F/F couples are remarked upon throughout the series. (More M/M because after a while only men were riders, females had largely phased out as Green-riders because of the politics of a Fall and stuff. Makes sense.) On a different tangent, I liked Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern more than others, but it was sad because if you've paid attention to the lore in past books you already know how it ends. :(

For Pern, the last ones I remember are Skies of Pern and Dolphins of Pern. They still had some plot but it still felt like matchmaker. Damia's Children and Lyon's Pride were the ones in that series that stuck with me as romance-centric.

If they're eating wood they aren't bumblebees, they're carpenter bees. The way to tell the difference is by the hair on the back end. Bumblebees have fuzzy butts, carpenter bees have hairless butts.

Good morning all,

I have a problem here on the farm.

This cat is a MONSTER!

farm8.staticflickr.com
He looks innocent enough but he has been systematically hunting the outside kitties.
I have not seen Forrest for almost a week. He has been following her around the farm and I would see them in the trees but I did not think too much of it.
Forrest is my ghost kitty so I am used to not seeing her for short periods of time and I did not think too much of her going missing.
Two days ago I saw Flower and Tom sitting under the riding mower, Flower was talking like normal but she would not stay still long enough to get petted. That is normal for her and I did not think too much about it.
Last night Oma Cassie came to the porch window and began meowing. She has never done this. I went out to talk to her and petted her a little. Then I showed her the pet door and let her come in. Li-Ion came out of the bedroom all mean and puffed looking. He got her trapped in the laundry room and I had to go after him. Cassie ran away but Li-Ion was dripping urine! He was all puffed and mad so I threw him in the bedroom where he attacked Fiona.

I think he ran Forrest and Flower off the farm. I wonder if he hurt Flower and that is why she meowed at me. I am trying to keep Li-Ion locked in the house for now but I did not see either of the girl kitties this morning. Oma Cassie has been extra loving and I am afraid she is lonely. I put out extra water dishes around the farm and I keep food in the garage for them.
Is there anything else I can do?

2013-05-19 08:43:54 AM
Tom has been ultra cool, he gets along with everyone.
He loves to be out and I saw him hunting a squirrel yesterday. He chased it up one tree but my trees form a canopy over the yard so the squirrel just scampered away from him. Tom has lost all his fat and he is getting quite fit. I saw him run all the way across the back yard just for fun. I have also seen Mountain chase him just for fun. I think it was more fun for the horse than the cat as Tom ran with his tail all puffed out. He goes out to eat with his Oma sometimes and comes in to lay on the bed with Max too.
He had been out all night and was sleeping on the sofa when I woke him up to take this picture.

Maynerdkittythis sudden aggressiveness makes me wonder if he is not feeling well. Maybe take him to the vet and have him tested for a UTI..in the mean time, isolate him. Maybe give him some catnip?

2013-05-19 08:50:50 AM
Max seems to like being here on the farm. He enjoys going out to the porch and sitting in the breeze. He and the other kitties go out to sit in the chicken pen and watch for song birds to come and eat the scratch grain. They dream of catching one but he is de clawed and about 15 years old so I don't think it will happen. He has been spending time in the bedroom by the air conditioner. It has been in the high 90's here and the house gets very warm, my bedroom got to 97.5 at 6PM last week so it was time to get a window unit in there.
Every now and again he demands pets and love, I was busy last week so he stalked off to the bedroom and sat with the dolly for a while.

tigerose: Maynerdkittythis sudden aggressiveness makes me wonder if he is not feeling well. Maybe take him to the vet and have him tested for a UTI..in the mean time, isolate him. Maybe give him some catnip?

I don't think it is sudden, he has never been outside before and I suspect it is territorial aggression. He has no problem with Max and Tom, just the girl kitties that he has never seen before.
I had not thought of the cat nip, he is a stoner and I have not given him any for a while.
I just hope Forrest and Flower come home again.
