The disgruntled woman who couldn't entice a kiss out of here boyfriend was Kellie Henderson, a supervisor in the Fresno Grizzlies' promotions department, and as she explained to Fresno television station KGPE, the event was a stunt concocted to amuse the crowd at that evening's game - "We decided, you know, there's going to be a pretty big crowd. We should do what we can and try and get the people to laugh.

That explains why you're surrounded by empty seats. This was not a publicity stunt at all.

in Alabama everything is a coke.  "Hey, you want a coke?"  "Sure."  "What kind?"  "Get me a Sprite."

I'd imagine it is a holdover from the olden days when all the soft drinks pretty much WERE "coke", but here in the south Coke is King.

doccm9: Coke is a BRAND you dumb hicks, not the whole genre of beverage.

"Coke" was a generic term for many soft drinks and even used by some competitors of Coca-Cola up until the 1940's when the U.S. Supreme Court found that the shorter "Coke" was a trademark of Coca-Cola.  Coca-Cola was invented in 1886, and flavored soda water had already been around, and was usually purchased at soda fountains or drug stores.  Phosphates were also popular, but there really wasn't a common generic catch-all term for all such flavored, carbonated beverages.  As Coca-Cola exploded in popularity, many competitors and imitators appeared, and naturally, like Band-Aids, Xerox, Kleenex, and LEGO bricks, the brand name became, much to the frustration of Coca-Cola, a generic term for all such products.  That was finally put to an end, of course, in the 1940's insofar as competitors using "coke" or even "Koke," but common usage lingered.  It's not as common nowadays as it was, but it's place in the vernacular is no less legitimate than "pop."

This map is biased.  It says "generic names for SOFT DRINKS" when it clearly should read "generic names for SODA"

All you POP drinkers, make sure you say hi to Mr. Weatherbee and Jughead for me at the malt shop. I'll be drinking my SODA in 2013.

How is this "funny" to anyone?
I'm guessing these fake kiss-cam/marriage proposals/etc. at sporting events are from the same people who brought us Fark TV.

What are all the "other" random specks calling it?

Maybe they are using the combined term "soda pop"? I've heard it before. Dunno how prevalent it might be though.

Looking at the "other" responses is entertaining.  I have to wonder about the people that said other and then still wrote in "soda" or "pop".

Yanks_RSJ: Can the soda/pop people at least agree that anyone who calls every kind of soda/pop "coke" are idiots?

You should use a kleenex to wipe up your tears of rage. I normally say coke, but if I am around my Florida Cracker grandparents and uncles its a "cold drink."

Or is it soda a few aneurysms?

That's only because they got in trouble for having coke lines.

Pop is the guy who picks up some soda on his way home from work.......

........ so that you can have a coke when he gets home.

doccm9: Yanks_RSJ: Can the soda/pop people at least agree that anyone who calls every kind of soda/pop "coke" are idiots?

Yes, and judging by the definition linked above about the origin and usage and evolution of the word, they are also stuck in the 1950's.
Guess that explains the usage by geographical area fairly well too.

...... and there ain't NUTHIN' like sharing a nice cold coke with my Earth Angel! Two straws please, Pop.

P.S.  Do a GIS for  "coke" and see what you get.
