Man, I SO regret not taking a picture of the directional sign that said 'POP MACHINES -->' the last time I was in Minnesota.  I could post it in here and pop a few random aneurysms.

Or is it soda a few aneurysms?

"Coke" was a generic term for many soft drinks and even used by some competitors of Coca-Cola up until the 1940's when the U.S. Supreme Court found that the shorter "Coke" was a trademark of Coca-Cola.  Coca-Cola was invented in 1886, and flavored soda water had already been around, and was usually purchased at soda fountains or drug stores.  Phosphates were also popular, but there really wasn't a common generic catch-all term for all such flavored, carbonated beverages.  As Coca-Cola exploded in popularity, many competitors and imitators appeared, and naturally, like Band-Aids, Xerox, Kleenex, and LEGO bricks, the brand name became, much to the frustration of Coca-Cola, a generic term for all such products.  That was finally put to an end, of course, in the 1940's insofar as competitors using "coke" or even "Koke," but common usage lingered.  It's not as common nowadays as it was, but it's place in the vernacular is no less legitimate than "pop."

What does it say on product labels, in ad media for the product, on product websites, etc?  I have NEVER seen "pop," and "Coke," while technically being a brand nickname for Coca-Cola, is acceptable shorthand for cola, but ONLY cola.  Amend your ways.

Does it say "soda" on bottles? Or does it just say the product name?

Yes, and judging by the definition linked above about the origin and usage and evolution of the word, they are also stuck in the 1950's.
Guess that explains the usage by geographical area fairly well too.

And I've never heard anyone use "coke" in Orleans Parish.  Other parts of Louisiana, maybe.  But yeah, even in stores: soda asile.
