mr_a: What I don't get is that breweries and brewpubs, even the ones that make Sessions, will have 15 beers, ALL of which are full of hops.
James!: I stay away from IPA's for this reason.
Pocket Ninja: As a general rule of thumb, if the beer's name contains the word "hop," any variation of the word "hop," or any sort of deliberate rhyme, pun, or other word play that builds off the word "hop," I will not buy it.
James!: One of the local beer bars has a strange obsession with banana flavors that I'd like them to move past.
Donnchadha: James!: One of the local beer bars has a strange obsession with banana flavors that I'd like them to move past. The production of isoamyl acetate during fermentatiom is usually a sign of "doing it wrong" -- or they can just own it and claim their beer was supppsed to taste like shiat.
mr_a: Put me in this category. I like my beers light and crisp, and live near Portland, OR. I would much rather a Peroni, Singha, or even a Bud rather than one of the local hoppy microbrews. What I don't get is that breweries and brewpubs, even the ones that make Sessions, will have 15 beers, ALL of which are full of hops. You'd think that there would be at least one crisp lager, since judging by the sales volume of Bud, Miller, et al, I can't be the only one that likes beer that way.
vernonFL: I like Dale's Pale Ale. I can't drink 6 or 7 of them in one sitting (well, I CAN) but its best not to.
Pocket Ninja: I will say, though, that the evils of excessively hopped beers aside, the absolute worst beer I think I've ever tried (in the US, anyway) was one I sampled at a bonfire just a few weekends ago. Somebody had brought a bottle of Rogue "Voodoo Doughnut" Bacon Maple Ale. I've liked a lot of Rogue beers in the past, and hey, bacon. So I figured, "how bad could it be?"Answer: So bad. So very, very bad.
fireclown: There IS kind of an IPA arms race.I think the hop frenzy is kind of a reaction to decades of sorta bland pilsners. And I'm glad to hear the criticism of American beers being "too much flavor" for once. Now where is that crazy-ass Baby Jesus porter?
genepool lifeboat: vernonFL: I like Dale's Pale Ale. I can't drink 6 or 7 of them in one sitting (well, I CAN) but its best not to.I have yet to try anything from Oskar Blues that I didn't like.
