The article does not mention anything about an HOA. This will be an HOA hate-thread anyway.

Did anyone else get that flaming flash ad for Monostat before the article? Nice placement.

I like how the only photo they have of him looks like it's from a 1957 yearbook but he hasn't aged at all since then.

Corbitt said that he was watching cartoons with his 3-year-old daughter, Kylie, when Bennett came over with two gas cans and a lighter.

How is including the girl's name even remotely relevant to anything at all in the story?

What I hate are the HOAs that say they'll do X for a certain amount and then try to nickel and dime ya for every little deviation after the action begins.... I mean, sometimes I want TWO BJs before the main event, and I don't think charging for both is really kosher, but once you get going it's difficult to make good financial decisions really.

Lousy HOAs.

FTA: Corbitt said he lost everything in the fire. His daughter was most worried about losing her tricycle, but within hours, some neighbors went out and bought her a new one.

Best part of the story. Sounds like a decent community, really. You know, aside from the odd homicidal pyromaniac.

Because the thought of a 3 year old on fire might quicken someone's pulse.  Especially if they're humanized by having a name.  I'm kinda surprised there wasn't a pic of the kid playing on their new trike.

The HOA reference is in no way fair to the guy.

If he's that highly strung that he's going to torch the neighbour's place over their mowing schedule, I imagine there was some paranoid mental illness thrown in the mix. I've heard about loonies who think the little aliens that control them with mindbeams lurk in uncut grass.

Considering the dude's on the run, I don't think this will end well, especially for him.

Bennett, 58, was last seen driving a dark red or maroon 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck with Georgia tag "BLP6438". He has an extensive criminal history, according to police, and is considered armed and dangerous.

Yeah...I'd say this dude will end up in a police shootout in the next few days

Isn't it about time for sensible restrictions on gasoline? It's only purpose is to burn. Maybe a gasoline licensing requirement? A tough exam and continuing education requirements. Maybe only professionally trained idividuals should be the only ones with authorization to own and carry. Mandatory child-proof locks on all devices that contain gasoline and all gasoline high velocity style flamable gas dispensors must be especially stored away from curious children. Minimum mandatory prison sentences for even first time offenders of highly destructive, extremely flammable, and potentially explosive weapons of mass destruction.

It's only a matter of time until someone tries this again

Please think of the children. If we can just save one child it will all be worth it.

Here in the UK petrol (as we call it) can only be dispensed by adults, can only be kept in specially designed containers and can only be stored in very limited quantities. Oh, and we have a small fraction of your killing-with-guns rate. Nyaaaaaaaaaah.

Because it establishes the social class and race of all involved without it having to be said. Just think what a different impression would have come from "his 3-year-old daughter, Tan'iqua" or "his 3-year-old-daughter, Amy" or "his 3-year-old daughter, Madison".

FTFAAuthorities are searching for a man who allegedly set a neighbor's yard on fire in Cartersville on Wednesday. [...] "And then he grabs the gas can, starts pouring it into the kitchen. As he's pouring, he takes his lighter and lights it. Flames were everywhere," Corbitt said.As flames erupted around him, Corbitt grabbed his daughter and got out of the burning home that belonged to his grandmother.

So which was ignited, house or garden?

Well, it didn't stop this crime. Therefore, it should be completely unregulated, and every person must have two cans full of gasoline within easy reach at all times.  The only person who can stop a bad guy with gas is a good guy with gas.

That WAS odd...usually you can blame the media for being sensationalistic, but not this time.

Headline:  neighbor sets yard on fire.  Meh.

Actual story:  neighbor pours gas INTO THE KITCHEN WHILE YOU'RE IN THE HOUSE WITH YOUR KID...that's some Elm Street level shiat right there.

I love my HOA... I don't pay them and they don't harrass me. They also don't mow my grass, trim my trees, or let me go to HOA functions.  *Bliss*

/it also might have something to do with a couple of 'unresolved crimes' after the President and Treasurer tried to strongarm me for more dues.

The article headline fails badly.  He set the guy's house on fire not his yard.  There is no HOA that would let the grass get that tall.  So many fails but I need to stop counting and drive to work.

Yeah, right.

When it comes to mowing lawns, there's three kinds of people.
The first wants it looking prim and proper all the time. The temporary look of their house and yard is important to them.
The second kind just wants to keep it under control. They'll procrastinate, they'll prevaricate, but once it gets shaggy and starts to actually look -bad-, they'll get it done.
Then there's the third kind, who hate having a lawn to mow and figure they have a thousand better things to do with their time.

I had an idea once for a self mowing yard. You'd have these things all in the ground like pop-up sprinker heads. But instead of spitting out water, they would pop out razor blades and whiz around really fast, and then reset and plop back down.

Only problem would be if your dog was out there....

2013-05-16 07:46:24 AM
I got a notice in the mail last summer from my HOA complaining about the height of my grass. It said "if you do not cut your yard within a week, we will hire someone to do it and bill you" as well. Most of my yard is in shade from various trees except for what's near the road, where it grows the best. That was the part they had seen; I had been waiting for the rest of the yard to grow up enough to cut. I mowed just the part that can be seen from the road and left the rest; didn't hear back from the HOA and no one showed up to cut it for me.

Just about ANYONE can purchase gasoline at a gas station. Even minors. No background check needed. You don't even need to own a car, or have a drivers license to purchase it. This is sheer madness.

Quantum Apostrophe: Why does home "ownership" turn many people into petulant children?

-ANYTHING- involving interactions with other people will turn the 'angry old white guy' set into petulant children. Petulant and violent children. Well-armed ones.

I think it has to do more with the demographic than the home ownership.
