Yes, but do you recall college being the place where the "training wheels came off" for your generation?

Sigh.

What a load of rubbish. Is there a problem with academic accommodations? Yes. But turning that into a defense of machismo is horrible psychology.   "We learn through experience and we learn through bad experiences. Through failure we learn how to cope."  You know who thought this was bullshiat?...That's right, the epitome of touchy feely psychology: BF Skinner. The fact that this guy is  child psychologist is embarrassing to the profession.

Unless you are currently living butt-ass naked on the African savanna using stone tools you can carry, all you are complaining about is a matter of degree.  Get over it.  You think life is too wimpy?  You can fix that for yourself.  Move to Somalia.  Exactly zero people are stopping you.

Almost everybody under the age of 30 is a coward it seems.

What's really shocking is how physically useless most other humans seem to be.  I'm accounted like...  The incredible hulk in our office, and I've never squatted more than 1.5 times my body weight.  A really strong person can do like .6 times more than that, and an EXTREMELY strong person can hit x3 or more.

Or perhaps it's today's playground, all-rubber-cushioned surface where kids used to skin their knees. And... wait a minute... those aren't little kids playing. Their mommies-and especially their daddies-are in there with them, coplaying or play-by-play coaching

Screw you, if they are swings or a merry-go-round, you bet your ass I'll be on them as well.

Swinging on some swings can be quite therapeutic, just better make sure if you are a male you don't go alone, someone is bound to call the cops on you.

I don't want to get all internet tough parent, but my 18 y/o is kind of badass.

I'm both proud and appalled by him, usually on the same day.

Doesn't preclude the possibility that every generation ever has been correct.

I swear I have read this article written slightly different by 30 different people with some minor variations on the theme in the past decade.  What is said may be mostly true but get some new material.

I'm sure this will be a thread of reasoned and measured commentary, and certainly won't descend into the same nostalgia-driven generational warfare that has occurred for the entirety of recorded human history.

Well, what practical purpose does that serve in this day and age?  We moved out of caves quite a while ago.

Came to say this.

Modern day playgrounds are often designed so that if a child can reach certain heights themselves, parents can be reasonably assured they cannot really hurt themselves.  It's when parents help their little toddlers up to the highest part of a play structure that problems happen.

Huh, I was expecting a physics discovery or an analogy to fat farks on the internet and their poor social skills in the social spaces to the effects of weakly interacting massive particles on the fabric of space.

Apparently I need to make sure I'm on the geek tab first next time.

Is this the Fark thread where we talk about how society is doomed unless we do something to improve ourselves or is this the tread where we assume there's nothing to fear because we worried about things before and everything is still fine?

Seriously? How many times have we seen this damned article?

2013-05-15 10:15:42 PM
I have seen at least half of the friends in my age group (late 40s) coddle or protect their kids in ways that would never have occurred to my parents. The other half pretty much raised their kids like they (and I) were raised: The occasional booboo was a fact of life, a "C" grade was tolerated so long as it wasn't the norm, and we had to make our own damn financial and logistical arrangements for our Senior Proms. Amongst our kids, the ones who were raised like we were, with the freedom to experience life for themselves, totally own the kids unfortunate enough to be saddled with helicoparents.

Even being there with your wife and your own children gets you sideways glances.

Apparently fathers are not supposed to take the occasional day off and hang with their family.

I think the pendulum is swinging back the other way.

Or maybe this is a upper middle class problem?
