The Obama Administration is having pretty much the worst week ever

You misspelled republican douchebagstrying to make scandals out of bullshiat. It's getting embarrassing.

It's the economy stupid, is always the answer.

Ideally, this temporary reprieve of the declining deficit should create enough breathing room for Congress to have a mature conversation about how to address the longer-term problem.

Congress?  A "mature conversation"? We're boned.

Pete and Repete. This most def should be greenlit using the Repeat tag. This headline is awesome

Actually, if the deficit shrinks too quickly, that is going to be bad news for Obama, because the economy will probably contract.

Yes, because we see the government as a resource for all the people, and not the weapon/bank for the aristocratic corporate wealthy

In addition, the CBO notes that the growth in healthcare spending has slowed in recent years. For instance, spending on Medicare and Medicaid in 2012 was 5% below what the CBO predicted it would be in 2010. In a response to this slowdown, the CBO has reduced its estimates for the growth of such spending, projecting that those programs will cost $225 billion less than previously thought over the next ten years.

GOP ads of "Obama cut your medicare and medicaid by 225 billion dollars!!!!" in 3... 2...

Do you know how pissed GOP'ers are going to be if this is accurate?

accusations like;

0bama fixed the numbers, again
lies, flat out.
Liberal math
Thanks to the Republicans!

NO MATTER THE IMPROVEMENT, OBAMA SIMPLY CAN'T WIN WITH THESE PEOPLE.

/I'm going to go ahead a do a preemptive facepalm for this thread.

This story presents a lot of great news, however either side wants to spin it.

They'll chalk it up to the sequester, until the economy slows down, at which point they'll blame tax increases.

But Michele Bachmann told me the IRS and DOJ 'scandals' are just to distract from Benghazi!  Who should I believe?!?!

When she called them out on it he decided to use Benghazi scandal as a way to distract from the IRS scandal.

Captain Dan: Isitoveryet: Do you know how pissed GOP'ers are going to be if this is accurate?

The spending cuts of the sequester, which was the idea of the Republicans, are responsible for any economic growth. Any economic downturn is a result of the sequester, which was entirely Obama's idea.

I thought the standard response to any unwanted CBO numbers is that they are based on faulty inputs.

I've been trying to keep up with the scandals but it makes my head hurt, especially the Benghazi talking points. Why do they matter so damn much?

We have a Democratic President.

No other answer makes sense.

At the end of the article, it says that eventually cuts in social programs combined with tax raises will be needed to manage the budget. Why not just reduce military spending and/or government spending by working on efficientcy instead? It would be easier and would maintain the health of the economy.

2013-05-15 07:43:09 PM
So,maybe, were going to overspend ourselves by half of what we overspent ourselves 4 years ago. Great.

Because that would make sense, fix the economy long term, and also be totally nonpartisan. What are you, some kind of Commie?

That's also possible, but it's riskier than just blaming tax increases.  Politicians usually choose the route of least resistance.

2013-05-15 07:47:02 PM
While this is good news now, expect it to jump back up once more baby boomers start retiring and going on social security.  Hopefully the economy's growth can offset that.

hawcian: I thought the standard response to any unwanted CBO numbers is that they are based on faulty inputs.

That's only for bad, unwanted news.  When it comes to good, unwanted news, it's trickier, because whining comes off as pessimistic.

Pessimism of any sort, even if completely realistic, will always be less popular than overly optimistic wishful thinking.

we don't let the grown ups govern. we let the people who have a vested interest in a particular project like the A1M1 decide their constituents jobs are more important than what a few hundred million other people want.

cuz it's all about the jobs.

no not on infrastructure silly, weapons. those are good high tech union jo -- wait those are union jobs? maybe it's time to rethink this.

The derp really has been cranked up to 11 this week. Had a woman today claim that the lack of outrage by liberals at the Abercrombie & Fitch CEO comments proved they had a double standard since they were mad at the CEO of Chick-fil-a. Took me about three seconds on Google to find an assortment of liberal blogs upset about A&F but she was sure of her position that it somehow proved something about liberals being bad people. Guess she thinks Huffington Post and feminists blogs are conservative or more likely simply wants to have something to be mad at liberals about whether it makes sense or not. The tone this week really has been nasty.

I love that fark republicans are back, you've been missed.

For so long you hid in the shadows and allowed the Fark Independents tm to do their dirty work.

it's been 26 months since simpson-bowles told us we are two years away from hyper-inflation, exploding deficits and permanent 10% unemployment.

Yep. Meanwhile the price of solar panels has dropped 80% in the last four years because China is cranking them out like rabbits breeding. They see a huge new market and they want to dominate it, using research and technology developed here. But we're still cranking out tanks and fighter jets the military doesn't even want. It's madness.

Nah, I'm pretty sure that's all thanks to the GOP voting to repeal Obamacare over and over.  Every time they vote to banish it the economy gains a little bit of confidence and recovers just a bit.  It's kinda like He-Man yelling 'thunder' at his sword.

To elaborate on my previous post, an example:

1) Scenario 1

Candidate A: "My opponent promises 10% annual growth.  He obviously thinks that you're either too innumerate or lazy to check his numbers, because there's no way growth is going to be that high, and not a single expert finds his plan credible."

Candidate B: "Sounds like my opponent is betting against the American people."

Candidate B wins the election in a landslide.

2) Scenario 2

Candidate A: "My opponent is predicting only 2% annual growth.  He obviously thinks that you're too lazy to return to the growth we once had in the past.  Well, I believe in America and the American work ethic."

Candidate B: "Not a single credible expert believes that we're going to exceed that goal, and it has nothing to do with work ethic or character."

Candidate B loses in a landslide.

I can admit the DOJ has some 'splainin' to do and that the IRS has some idiots who deserve to be fired, but I don't really see how Obama himself has done anything wrong here.

With that being said, I think he's done a lot of stuff wrong in the past when it comes to policy decisions, but these "scandals"? Not so much.

2013-05-15 07:59:39 PM
FTFA:  This change is yet another vindication of economists and commentators who argued that large budget deficits are the natural outgrowth of effective economic policy in the wake of a severe recession.

The fact that this matter is even up for debate among certain Very Serious People never fails to boggle my mind.
